Cutting edge research

Priyangi Alwis, Bachelor of Biomedical Science

“The last few decades have been very exciting for biomedical research, with great

leaps in understanding how the human body works and how diseases occur.

There are so many fascinating topics to be explored, and I wanted to be a part of that.”

After finishing her Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Priya completed an Honours degree and has now started her Phd at Monash. Her research focuses on a soil-dwelling microorganism, a bacterium known as Burkholderia pseudomallei that causes the severe and often life-threatening disease melioidosis.

Graduating from Republic Polytechnic (RP) in Singapore with an Advanced diploma in Biomedical Sciences in February 2008, Priya celebrated another milestone just ten months later when she graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science.

The 2+1 arrangement between RP and Monash was an attractive pathway for Priya. not only did she complete her bachelor’s degree very quickly, Priya could also experience overseas education at a fraction of the typical cost for an international student.

Emergency Health (Paramedic), Nursing and Midwifery

Study at a university ranked in the world’s top 1%

With a qualification from Monash, you are not just job ready, you are sought after. Employers know the strength of the teaching we deliver at Monash. With clinical experiences starting in year 1, you build the skills and confidence to embrace the real-life world of emergency health (paramedic), nursing and midwifery.

At Monash you will have the opportunity to develop your skills guided by leading researchers and teachers. You can extend yourself in your learning and research to enhance your experience and employment opportunities.

Degrees in emergency health (paramedic), nursing, midwifery

We offer three degrees in emergency health (paramedic), nursing and midwifery and two double degrees in nursing/midwifery and nursing/emergency health (paramedic).

Whether your dream is being the first responder to a medical emergency or providing care for the ill and our ageing community, paramedics and nurses will always be looked upon as frontline careers. Choosing midwifery allows you to participate in one of the most emotional times in life – the care of women before, during and after the birth of their babies.

Career options

Koby Griffiths, Bachelor of Nursing (Community Health)

“I chose nursing because it provides a meaningful career. I love caring for people and I get great satisfaction from seeing people respond to my care.”

“The Nursing course allows me to keep my options open in terms of nursing

opportunities into the future.”

After undertaking one of his clinical rotations at an aged care facility, Koby was offered an ongoing position. He assists people with their physical mobility and personal and therapeutic care needs.

Smaller classes

Laura Butler, Bachelor of Nursing

Laura said the small class sizes really appealled to her when she was researching nursing courses.

“The small classes allow greater one-on-one interaction with

teaching staff, who have a genuine engagement with their students.”

Life on campus

Paraskevi Loupis, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery

“The smaller campus experience at Peninsula is fantastic because it has a community feel.

“I also really enjoy the opportunity we have to socialise and work with students from other allied health courses so that we can begin our interdisciplinary relationships early.”

First class teaching

Paraskevi Loupis, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery

“My mum studied at Monash so I always had a soft spot for the University, but the many incredible positions for clinical placement and employment afterwards, as a result of Monash’s close relationships with some of the largest healthcare providers in the country, was also a key factor!”

“The academics, lecturers, and tutors are some of the best in their field.”

Professional placements

Paraskevi Loupis, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery

So far Paraskevi has undertaken placements at Casey Hospital’s postnatal and antenatal unit, dandenong antenatal and Rosebud hospital’s rehab unit.

“The clinical components of the course are fantastic; they provide a great

opportunity to consolidate the theory, and for a period of time you get to live the

life you can expect to have when you graduate but with supervision and assistance

available whenever you need it.

“After just one year I have spent almost a month on placement and feel completely

prepared to handle the challenges ahead!”

Other pathways

Koby Griffiths, Bachelor of Nursing (Community Health)

When Koby completed Year 12 in 2011, his ATAR was marginally lower than the requirement for entry into nursing. So he undertook the one-year alternative entry pathway – the diploma of Tertiary Studies (doTS).

“I was able to immediately start my nursing studies with all the other first-year nursing students, but these studies were combined with units that focused on the academic requirements of university. This helped me become familiar with what was expected of me academically.”

on completion of his one-year doTS course, Koby was accepted into the second year of the Bachelor of nursing (Community Health).

Double degrees – double the possibilities

Michael Fox, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic)

“Whilst the emergency health side of the course teaches you more advanced CPR, heart rhythm interpretation and insertion of breathing tubes (skills that nurses typically learn as post-graduates, not undergraduates), the nursing degree provides a wider overview of medications, mental health and speciality areas such as wounds or child health.”

The life of a nurse

Michael Fox (Graduate), Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic)

“While I was well prepared for the actual patient care, there is a lot more ‘behind the scenes’ work to do as a nurse, such as clerical work, and dealing with families and other health professionals.

“Being able to take charge of someone’s care, particularly in an emergency, is extremely rewarding.

“obviously, healthcare can be quite challenging at times. Quite literally, you have people’s lives in your hands.”

Michael Fox is just about to start his dream job as an emergency department nurse.

Michael blogs about his experiences as a graduate nurse, providing insights from working a double shift to caring for people in their final stages of life: http://www.peninsulahealth.org.au/author/mike-fox/

Next steps

Paraskevi Loupis, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery

Paraskevi is very interested in midwifery care in developing countries and hopes to spend time in countries of need after graduation.

“After this I hope to work part-time in a midwifery ward and the rest of the time as a palliative care nurse, completing the circle of life.”

Laura Butler, Bachelor of Nursing

“one advantage of nursing is that there are a lot of opportunities to work overseas so work in another country is definitely on my agenda!

“Apart from that, my main goal is to specialise in an area I’m really passionate about and hopefully come back to Monash to complete some form of postgraduate study.”

Michael Fox has just completed his graduate year at Frankston hospital.

Caring for those in need

Daniella Benjamin, Bachelor of Health Science

While daniella is still undecided about her future career – possibly postgraduate medicine or further studies in public health – eventually she wants to work in developing regions, amongst vulnerable groups marginalised by society.

“I’d love to address maternal and child health needs in areas such as the northern Territory and sub-Saharan Africa as my Honours project will look at identifying the gaps of primary healthcare service utilisation for young women in the Top End of the northern Territory.”

Clinical psychology

Sophie Robinson, Bachelor of Psychology (with Honours)

“I have just started a doctor of Clinical Psychology and I am really enjoying it. The dPsych program at Monash University appealed to me as it offers a wide variation in research opportunities and provides specialisation in one of three psychology fields: adult clinical psychology, forensic psychology, and child, adolescent and family psychology. I have chosen the child, adolescent and family psychology specialisation and hope to work in this area once qualified.”

Sophie completed a Bachelor of Psychology (with Honours). Her Honours project examined the mediating role of neuroticism in the relationship between mindfulness and depression.

Combining work and further study

Ame Pocklington, Bachelor of Health Science and Bachelor of Social Work

Ame has completed an Honours year in social work where she investigated the community’s perception of a supervised injecting facility in the City of Yarra.

Ame plans to work part time as a social worker while undertaking postgraduate law.

“Ultimately I aim to combine my understanding of public health and social justice with a greater knowledge of the legal system so that I can continue to work for human rights and equality.”

Study and clinical placements in rural Victoria

William Goss, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

“The theory and teaching provided in the MBBS program fits in very nicely with the ward experience and the simulation program that is run. Having studied the basic sciences such as anatomy and physiology, in year 1 and 2, the following years focus on building that foundation into clinical knowledge. The simulation program in Bendigo is run by very highly qualified tutors, who go out of their way to help the students. It allows the students to put the theory into practice in real-life situations. This has been one of the best aspects of the ERC program.

What to expect in your course

L–R William Goss (Year 4), Lachie Evans (Year 2), Jake Malouf (Year 2), Saada Malouf (Year 4) and Harry Goss (Year 2). MBBS students in the Extended Rural Cohort stream get to undertake the bulk of their clinical experience (Years 3 to 5) in regional Victoria.

“The staff at the hospital and clinical school are always friendly and willing to go out of their way to help the students.”

“The teaching is exceptional, there is plenty of hands-on experience, and the simulations that are run at the clinical school are the best way to prepare yourself for life in the hospital.”

Categories of places

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)Each year approximately 150 Commonwealth-supported places are available in the Monash MBBS course.

Extended Rural Cohort (ERC)Each year approximately 30 CSP places are available under the Extended Rural Cohort scheme. Some of these places may be Bonded Medical Places (BMP). See below for more details. The ERC stream within the MBBS enables students to undertake extended clinical training across rural and regional northern Victoria.

detailed information about the ERC can be found at: www.med.monash.edu/medical/northernvic

Bonded Medical Places (BMP) The federal government has advised all Australian medical schools that about 25 per cent of their CSP places must be allocated as BMP. At Monash we offer about 60 Bonded Medical Places. By indicating a preference for a BMP, upon accepting an offer, the student will be required to sign a contract provided by the Commonwealth Government. Monash advises potential students to seek early legal advice. Students accepting a BMP will be required to practise in a designated area of medical need at the completion of their training, including specialist training.

You must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident at the time of application to be eligible to apply for a BMP.

Nutrition and Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Radiography and Medical Imaging

Where theoretical and practical excellence combine for healthcare professionals

A Monash course in nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or radiography and medical imaging combines hands-on practical experience with intellectual rigour. This is the combination that attracts employers to our graduates, especially when it is taught by a premier university.

Increasing chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease require the attention of many health professionals working in combination. You will learn in state-of-the-art facilities how to be a part of the new, more holistic ways of treating and managing these health issues.

Inspiring teachers

Elisa Rossimel, Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics

Elisa was inspired by her lecturer dr Claire Palermo to pursue a career in indigenous health.

“It was while listening to Claire’s lectures on indigenous health that I became passionate about working in this area, and after graduating in 2011 I was fortunate to gain a position at Maari Ma. Maari Ma is a community-controlled Aboriginal health corporation, which services the far west of nSW and happens to be based in one of Australia’s most overweight towns – Broken Hill.”

Elisa feels that the best thing about working as a dietitian rurally, and in Aboriginal health particularly, is the amazing diversity which allows her work to spread into all areas of health.

“As well as seeing a huge range of conditions in patients of all ages, I have been able to develop and run health promotion courses and cooking classes in preschools, schools, and communities, train Aboriginal Health Workers and teachers to better specialise in nutrition and develop a nutritional intervention program for at-risk families at an Intensive Supported Playgroup.

“This diversity has taught me a great deal about issues that branch off dietetics, including Aboriginal culture, engaging diverse and troubled communities, mental health, dental issues, early childhood development, and the realities of living rurally.

“Whilst at times a very challenging area, it provides a wealth of independence and creativity, allowing you to get involved at a grass-roots level and see the real impacts you have changing people’s lives.”

Elisa blogs about the way foods are used and loved across different cultures (www.dietitianonamission.me)

Dr Claire Palermo, Senior lecturer and 4th-year convener, Nutrition and Dietetics

dr Claire Palermo’s background as a public health nutritionist allows her not only to provide a solid basis for teaching but also a solid foundation for providing insights about working in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

“Being able to share my passion in the field of nutrition and dietetics through teaching is a wonderful opportunity. To see our students learn and develop their skills over the course of the degree is extremely rewarding.

“The course really allows our students to develop their understanding and skills in key areas that dietitians are increasingly sought for in fields like indigenous health, chronic disease, aged care and the food industry.

“I’m particularly excited when I see where our graduates end up – at the forefront of healthcare and making meaningful impacts in a variety of communities and society in general.”

What to expect in your course

Lab sessions

Benn Stockdale, Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging

“I also found the biology lab sessions to be very interesting. The depth of pathology and physiology was very challenging to learn, but the physical specimens were always very interesting.”

Work ready

Benn Stockdale, Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging

A typical work day for Benn generally involves seeing between 20 and 30 patients for x-ray or CT examinations.

“I spend much of the time coordinating the more complex or urgent procedures with doctors and nursing staff or fast-tracking abnormal results so treatment can be undertaken more quickly.”

Benn says that working in a regional area is particularly enjoyable.

“Although I work in a department with just one other radiographer you become very close to the team you work with. I have the opportunity to work independently and in all fields of medical imaging each day.”

Follow your passion

Mikaela Vaughan, Bachelor of Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy student Mikaela Vaughan moved away from home to undertake her studies and provides some advice about making that move. While it can be daunting, it provides some great new opportunities and experiences.

“It’s easy to think that you are the only one that is a long way from home but you soon find out that many other students are in exactly the same position as you!”

She added that the most important thing was to work out what you are passionate about.

“It makes learning fun, and the structure of uni courses gives you the freedom and independence to structure your learning to a style that suits you.”
