Shiitake, Lentinus edodesResearch has already showed the benefits of shiitake mushroom in lowering cholesterol. Research conducted in Japan identified a specific amino acid in shiitake that helps speed up the processing of cholesterol in the liver. In a 1974 study on 40 elderly and 420 young women consumed 9 gram of dried shiitake every day for 7 days. After a week, total cholesterol levels had dropped 7 to 15% in the older and 6 to 12% in the young women.

Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus species) Species of the genus Pleurotus are excellent producers of

lovastatin and as such, Pleurotus could be considered as a functional food with natural cholesterol-lowering ability (Gunde-Cimerman, 1999).

Oyster mushroom lowes cholesterol and triglycerol levels as well as very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in blood plasma. They have also been shown to have activity in anti-tumor, immune response, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial.

They are replete with assorted vitamins such as vitamin C (30-44mg/100grams), and vitamin B (100mg/100grams) and niacin.

Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus species)

Traditionally, it has been used to strengthen veins and relax tendons.

In China oyster mushroom is indicated for joint and muscle relaxation (Yang & Jong, 1989). A product containing oyster mushroom, called "Tendon-easing

powder," is effective in the treatment of lumbago, numbed limbs, tendon and blood vessel discomfort.
