Home to some 3,100 life sciences, medical technology and research organizations and more than 1,700 firms involved in materials-related research and development, the Netherlands is a major hub for the European medical technology industry.

Medical Technology Leaders Choose the NetherlandsMultinationals like Philips, Fujifilm, Agfa HealthCare, Stryker, Medtronic, Siemens, GE Healthcare and Abbott choose the Netherlands for a multitude of operations, such as R&D, European headquarters, manufacturing and logistics.

Unmatched Business Advantages The Dutch multilingual workforce, open innovation R&D combined with its pro-business climate and high quality infrastructure make it an ideal location for medical technology companies looking to expand in Europe.

World-leading Open Innovation FacilitiesThe Netherlands hosts world-leading MedTech facilities, such as the in 2019 opened Imaging Center. The Imaging Center is the only place in the world where production, clinical care, preclinical and clinical research take place in a collaborative manner between academics and companies. All in just one building. Another world-leading facility is Scannexus, a shared facility with Ultra-High-Field MRI scanners, which is well known for its population imaging with companies like Quantib and Scyfer.

Your Hub for Medical Technology Innovation

“We cooperate very well with the universities in the Netherlands; here in Brabant, the High Tech Campus is almost around the corner”.

Peter StruijkPresident

Fujifilm Manufacturing Europe

When Fujifilm first went in search of a strategic location for its European facilities, the UK, France, Germany, Ireland and Belgium were considered — but the company chose to locate in the Netherlands. Fujifilm eventually decided on Brabant because of the clean climate and the favorable labor market.

Medtronic the Netherlands is located mostly in Limburg. This province is called ‘the balcony of Europe’, which accounts for the international mindset of the inhabitants (the Limburgers). The ample availability of a well-trained labor force with the necessary language skills contributed significantly to Medtronic’s global growth from Limburg”.

Medtronic

The Netherlands’ contributions to medical technology date back to the invention of the microscope (1590), the invention of the ECG (1924), and the first functioning artificial kidney (1943).

Medtronic has had a presence in the province of Limburg, in the south of the Netherlands, since 1969 and has celebrated its 50th anniversary. Today, all of Medtronic’s therapy groups and divisions are represented in the country. Medtronic employs around 3,000 people, including contractors, throughout the Netherlands.

In 1969, when Medtronic co-founder Earl Bakken was looking for a location for the first facility outside of US, he visited the Netherlands and opted for Limburg. The region was chosen for its centralized location and the rapid and easy connections with the rest of Europe. Additionally, the proximity of the major sea harbors of Rotterdam and Antwerp and the air hubs of major global transport integrators, made Limburg the ideal location to establish operations.

DID YOU KNOW...

In the Netherlands, science, industry and government work together in public-private partnerships.

Supported by public-private partnerships, the Dutch MedTech industry has fostered groundbreaking advancements in radiology and medical imaging. One example is the Innovative Medical Devices Initiative NL (IMDI.nl), in which many researchers from a variety of disciplines are working together with physicians, clinicians and technologists, as well as producers and users of medical devices. They are organized in eight Centers of Research Excellence (CoREs), with a focus on medical instrumentation.

Innovation Policy: Four Missions for a Better Future

Lifestyle2040 30% decrease in unhealthy lifestyle originated disease burden.
