Dear All, I sincerely hope you had a great and enjoyable summer. The leaves are already starting to change. It is incredible how fast summer went! Welcome back for what I anticipate will be an exciting year, with new challenges and achievements. The new format for our newsletter will be ready to go with the October issue. As always, your contributions are welcome, and we invite you to submit your newsworthy stories and photos to Mary Ann, our editor. No need to tell you about the increasing pressure on medical imaging in our province, in order to decrease costs, optimize utilization, as well as monitor and improve quality. Even though we are already doing a great job at all of our sites, there are growing expectations for quality, accountability and availability. On the economic side, in a stretched environment, we have to optimize the use of our existing resources and look at more collaboration and sharing between sites within our institution, the city and LHIN. This means that this coming year you will see the implementation of new processes to deliver a better, safer and more efficient service. This will require more coordination between the sites and within the management group. Therefore, I have decided to create a new position to support us in this process. The future Director of Clinical
Operations will be recruited among the radiologists to help the Chief to plan, develop, implement and manage the multi-site resources of the Diagnostic Imaging Department at HHS. A selection committee will be appointed and I will keep you updated. The successful candidate will be announced at our annual business retreat which will take place Saturday, December 8th. Our colleagues from all sites, including Nuclear Medicine and St. Joseph’s will be invited. On the academic side, we are working on an expanded round series to be held on the third Tuesday of each month. These rounds will be clinically orientated with practical value to residents and practicing radiologists, bringing recognized speakers and subject experts in subspecialties. We invite you all to participate and hope to see a great turnout. Under Dr. Patlas’ direction, you are invited to attend a new series of Emergency Radiology Grand Rounds starting September 11, 2012 at the Hamilton General Hospital. On that note, we are welcoming the arrival of ETA (Event Tracking Activity) to Radiology. ETA allows multiple departments to share access to common and custom calendars. The Radiology calendar will allow Radiology faculty, residents and fellows to subscribe to rounds from all other participating departments, receive event notifications, as well as track individual attendance. Training will
take place in the near future with a projected go-live in early fall. Further details to follow. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Nina Stein on the birth of her baby boy, Samuel. Congratulations also to Dr. Anand Gaikwad on the birth of his baby girl, Saavi. Look for the beautiful photos in this newsletter. JHCC has a new Canadian! Congratulations to Dr. Naveen Parasu and enjoy your celebration in Ottawa. Also, welcome to Jerome Marrin, who is replacing Jordan Hagel as our new web administrator. Jerome looks forward to the opportunities and challenges of working with the McMaster website and staff. Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Again I wish you all a very happy back-to-school and a lot of fun and satisfaction at work. All the best,
Dr. David Koff Chief of Diagnostic Imaging,

St. Joseph’s Healthcare
We are pleased to announce St Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton Ultrasound Departments (Charlton Campus, King St Campus and Fontbonne) have been accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), in General, Breast and Obstetrical/Gynecological ultrasound imaging.
By becoming accredited, our departments have demonstrated that we meet/exceed nationally recognized standards in the performance and interpretation of diagnostic ultrasound examinations. We are committed to clinical excellence and high quality patient care. We are only the fourth health care facility in Canada to have AIUM Accreditation and we are the only health centre accredited in General, Breast and OB/GYN imaging. Our staff should be very proud of the quality care we provide our patients.
A special thank you to Angie Medic and Sarah Todd for all their hard work and time obtaining our accreditation, as well as all staff that assisted in obtaining images and information.
Congratulations on your Accreditation! - Ultrasound Teams - Charlton Campus

CIBC Breast Diagnostic & Assessment Clinic (BDAC)
For nearly six years, Hamilton Health Sciences (JHCC campus) has been in discussion and more recent detailed planning of the CIBC Breast Diagnostic and Assessment Clinic (BDAC); tentatively scheduled to be opened in 2013. The clinic will significantly streamline and improve breast cancer screening and treatment by encompassing genetics, surgery/oncology, mammography, breast ultrasound, sentinel node biopsy and breast molecular imaging. Today, more and more research is surfacing about how the healthcare environment is directly linked to positive patient outcomes. Patient centric and evidence based design helps create an environment in which patients feel as safe and comfortable as possible. As well, it promotes efficiencies in staff workflow and helps decrease levels of stress and anxiety in both patients and staff. Consequently, it was understood that the physical design of the CIBC BDAC would have significant implications for the ability of the hospital to meet its goals for care that is safe, patient-centered, clinically effective and collaboratively delivered. The team at Zeidler Partnership Architects worked with the HHS team (Diagnostic Services, Cancer Centre Staff, OBSP and Capital Development) to imagine what it will be like for women to go to the clinic because they have symptoms of breast cancer, abnormalities have been detected, they’re at high genetic risk or they require follow up after cancer treatment. We understood that patients are increasingly recognized as the "experts" about the subjective quality of their experience--what matters, what makes them feel better, and what they need to help them recover, heal, and adapt to significant changes in their lives. Because they are truly the only individuals who can tell us this information, as we work to create "life-enhancing" environments in healthcare, we must understand how patients and their families experience those environments and what it is about them that matters to them most. Factors that patients can interpret and evaluate their experience… which we included in our design were:
Facility appearance
Nature & positive distraction Noise reduction
Ambiance & lighting Way finding
Privacy and confidentiality Customer service and satisfaction
Patient safety According to Tarek El-Khatib (Zeidler senior partner in charge of design), “These are women who are going to spend some time in a place where they may or may not know they have cancer and they’re very traumatized. We wanted an environment that envelops you and takes your mind off the stress. It was completely centered around the emotional journey of a patient and how we can alleviate tension by creating environments that are very pleasant, beautiful and calming to help them with that process.” The first step was giving it a separate entrance so women don’t go into the hospital at all. Instead, they walk into a waiting room surrounded by gardens and water features including a wet-wall. There is an outdoor courtyard for the summer and a fireplace for the winter. Patients often use smart phones to look up their disease on the Internet while waiting. In addition, to make sure they get reliable information, the clinic will have an education centre with computer access and pamphlets. It will include a classroom for public information sessions and for multidisciplinary rounds. Notably, the clinical areas have been made as calming as possible by using natural light, soft wood and curving ceilings. The CIBC BDAC is well positioned and poised for the future as a result of employing an innovative design approach. Notably, the clinic is already getting international attention; Zeidler Partnership Architects won an award last month for the design of the CIBC BDAC at the 8th Design and Health World Congress and Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The exhibition is put on by the International Academy for Design among design, health, science and culture. The team at Zeidler Partnership Architects will be providing a presentation to HHS staff this fall. I will be sure to circulate the invitation and encourage you to attend to learn more about this exciting and innovative project.

CBO and Optimization Project Over the past year and a half, the Department of Diagnostic Services implemented a project to centralize booking across HHS and implemented an electronic requisition management and protocoling system. Some of the benefits we have realized include operational cost savings, increases in overall booking clerk productivity, and decreases in booking turnaround times in some areas. We have had many successes in the implementation and at the same time have encountered some challenges and have had to course correct and adjust based on your feedback and input. In order to continuously improve, an optimization project has been initiated to propose recommendations to the central booking office and the electronic requisition management system over the next four months. Two working groups have been formed with staff and physicians representing all sites and modalities. If you would like to provide feedback on the CBO or Mi-Req program, please contact one of your colleagues on the working groups. Alternatively, you can contact the facilitator of the groups, Jean Beckberger at x64182 or [email protected]
