March InService Sessions—Ergonomics
March InService will be dedicated to Patient Handling, Stretching and Ergonomics. Medic
employees are placed in stressful and physically demanding environments. It is important that
you know the proper patient handling techniques to avoid injury. This training will review all
patient handling guidelines and ergonomic techniques, which will help reduce future injury
and improve overall wellness of our employees.
For the past several months, Human Resources has worked with Fit Responder, a company
dedicated to injury prevention founded by a former Medic employee. Together, they have
developed a training program specific to EMS. All Safety Officers, Field Training Officers and
the Medical Services Department received training to become certified instructors of this
program. Safety Officers, FTO’s and EQS’s will be promoting these techniques throughout all
aspects of their job duties – i.e. new hire class, on-scene, simulation training, corporate
compliance. Instructors will set the standard for these guidelines and will serve as a resource
for all employees who need further instruction or clarification. You will receive feedback
from them occasionally to help you become proficient in these skills.
It is required that you sign up for a March InService date prior
to attending a session. March InService will begin on March 14th
and end on March 26th. To sign up for a session you must login
to the LMS. If you need your login information, please contact
Elisabeth Mitchell via email at [email protected].
Moving forward, this training program will become part of your annual corporate compliance
training to ensure that we keep our skills up to date.
If you have any questions regarding the March InService sessions, please contact Elisabeth
Mitchell via email at [email protected]. If you have any questions about Medic’s
Ergonomics program, please contact Leigh Taibe via email at [email protected] or Amy
Johnson via email at [email protected].

This month employees will begin receiving messages related to
April’s InService sessions, which will focus on raising the
awareness of the diversity that exists within Medic and the
community we serve. These sessions are as important as any CE
session you will participate in this year. The Agency’s Diversity
Council, which has been meeting and discussing the importance of
Diversity at Medic for over 18 months, actually designed this
year’s sessions and will be participating in its delivery.
Your Managers and Supervisors participated in the trial run this
past February and they enjoyed it; based on their feedback, I think
you will enjoy what we have planned for you.
The Lead Team and I have been a part of the Diversity Council
since its inception, along with colleagues of yours from across the
Agency. This team has shared and learned a lot together.
The overarching theme has been the importance of understanding
and valuing the differences that exist among each of us. If we can figure out a way to help all of Medic’s employees connect
with this aim, this Agency will be that much more successful.
My expectation is that each of you will open your minds and actively participate in the program. Let your guard down. Be
honest, respectful and inquisitive. If you are able to do so, I believe you will leave with a much clearer sense of how the
diversity within Medic actually makes us stronger. From there, we can accomplish a great deal together.
I hope you enjoy the session and look forward to receiving your feedback. Thanks for all you continue to do for this
Agency and the community we serve. Joe Penner

All Agency Philips MRx cardiac monitors have been assigned to specific units.
With this in mind, there are a few changes in the process and its management as related to how we operate and manage
cardiac monitors. In order to assure we have complete accountability for all monitors and their locations, monitors can
no longer be interchanged between units. All monitors have been relabeled with a specific number that aligns with the
unit it is assigned. If at any time there is a need to change out monitors, a new monitor must be retrieved from an OST in
Logistics and signed for accordingly.
Several monitors have been placed on reserve in Logistics if needed. These reserve monitors are labeled as 063 - 070 in
case you run across one that doesn’t match the unit it’s on.
If you have questions, please contact Operations Manager Bryan Edwards via email at [email protected] or Education
& Quality Specialist Steve Vandeventer at [email protected].

A bound copy of the Patient Care
Protocols has been placed on the
action area shelf in every transport
unit in the system. These protocol
books are marked “Ambulance Copy
– Do Not Remove” and are for your
use during the shift. DO NOT
remove them from the ambulance.
Since new protocols were released,
they will have to be formatted and loaded into the Siren
ePCR system. We will accomplish this as soon as possible.
For questions, please contact Deputy Director Kevin Staley
at kevins@medic911com.
Protocol Books for Ambulances
Learning and Development has been working diligently over
the past few months to make corrections and apply updates
to the patient care protocols. Protocols located on the
Medic Extranet have been replaced with the most current
version which contains all of the previously released
updates and amendments as communicated by Dr.
Swanson.
It is imperative that each employee update their
electronic copy of the protocols with this new
release. If you have previously downloaded the patient
care protocols to your computer or mobile device, please
visit the Medic Extranet to obtain the most current version.
As the patient care protocols are an ever-evolving
document, please be on the lookout for future updates.
Any new changes will be communicated via email as they
have previously so that you may update your personal hard
copy immediately. We will then communicate the need to
update your electric copies as those updates are applied to
the Extranet.
For questions, please contact a member of Learning and
Development.

Thank you to everyone who has logged in to the new
online learning management system and has been
completing the February continuing education content.
We have identified a couple of issues that need to be
resolved. As a result, we have temporarily removed the
content from the LMS server. If you have not yet
completed the February modules, please do not worry.
The due dates for the material will be adjusted once we put
everything back online. We appreciate your patience.
Online sign up for the March InService is still
available. If you have not already done so, please go online
to sign up for a date/time to attend the live, in-auditorium
sessions of March InService. If you have any questions,
please contact Education Assistant Elisabeth Mitchell at ext.
6132 or via email at [email protected].

When importing monitor data into SIREN, please select exclude “Audio and QPCR data” on monitor prior to
sending to SIREN. All vital sign data and ECG strips will still be imported. QCPR data is a large file that slows the transfer
process down. This data will be captured at the end of your shift when you download all data from the monitor.
This can be found on the monitor while sending the ECG to the tablet by the following steps, proceed as if you were
sending an ECG to the tablet then choose:

Last week five people who participated in Medic’s Weightmania wellness challenge won $1,000 for tracking their weight
and nutrition all year long. Their names were randomly drawn from a list of 11 people who completed the challenge. The
Wellness Committee would like to congratulate the following people on their accomplishments.
Stephanie Benson “This has been a truly eye opening experience. I have always
prided myself on being able to eat whatever I wanted and not
gain weight. Then I started this challenge and it wasn't until I sat
down and started seeing how many calories I was taking in in
one sitting that I really started to care about what I was eating.
Although I have not gained or lost any weight I have become
more mind full of what I put into my body. I have stopped eating
fast food as much and have made a conscious effort to eat
better. I feel like I have more energy now and hope to continue
improving my new healthy lifestyle for years to come.”
Mariann Earwood
“Over the last year I have lost around 30 lbs because of keeping
track of my food and exercise. Also weighing weekly made me
more aware if I was gaining or losing weight. I learned to eat
better and to be aware of the food that I was putting into my body. At the end of it all I was happy I lost some of my baby
weight from my son and I plan to continue to track and watch what I eat and I was thankful for this program and chance
to when extra money.”
Laurie Feola
“I have enjoyed participating in Medic’s Fitness Challenge, it was a positive experience. I do have to admit that the chance
to win prize money was the reason I became involved in the first place. But once I started my daily tracking in the food
journal, it made me think about the choices I make. I was shocked to learn the sodium content and calories in some of
the foods I was eating. Even so called “healthy choices” were not as healthy as I thought. As a result, I am making better
choices and eating less processed foods and more whole grains. I have also become an avid nutrition label reader. I don’t
buy anything without reading the label first. I am thankful to have been part of this Challenge and will be continuing the
healthy habits I acquired this past year.”
Lester Oliva
“The Weightmania challenge was a real wake up call for me. Tracking what you ate and seeing the nutritional values give
you a realistic view of your nutritional habits. Personally, I learned how my sodium and caloric intake are negatively
impacted by my eating out habits at work. This motivated me to be more diligent about planning my work meals during
shifts. I see myself continuously tracking my meals in the near future and trying to use the data to improve my overall
nutritional health.”
Jonathan Wise
“This contest kept me on track with my current habits. It was fun to keep track of my daily progress and see how much I work out. The most fun was trying to get other people motivated to form new habits and possible life changes.”
Weightmania $1,000 Winners Announced
Wellness Committee leader Linda Hendley is pictured with two of the lucky $1,000
winners! Jonathan Wise & Laurie Feola both tracked their fitness & nutrition for a
year.
