WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA AND FILM IN INFLUENCING

FASHION?

Page 2: Media project 2 PDF

There are many ways that the media and film influences fashion…

In this slideshow we have chosen to focus on three key areas: !- Body image and the use of plus size models and the prevention of

using models with an unhealthy BMI, !- The influence of period dramas such as Downton Abbey and films such

as The Great Gatsby,!

- The influence of social media (Facebook, blogs, Pintrest and Instagram etc.).

Plus size vs. Size 0

The term ‘plus-size’ is a phrase present in the fashion industry, and is potentially destructive to a woman's self-confidence. !Plus size: The women’s size range that caters to women who wear sizes 14 to 28, and models who are above a 10/12. !The fashion industry and its consumers today continue to use garments and techniques to enhance their body shape and create illusions of ‘desirable images’, whether that be a hourglass figure through body shaping garments, or a size 0 model being airbrushed in magazines.

Television and Film’s Effect on Fashion

The hugely successful television series Sherlock also hugely influenced the fashion industry, as have many other television programmes and films. !In the last few years Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby has had a huge influence on the fashion industry, influencing high street brands such as Miss Selfridge and high end designers such as Prada, Gucci, Valentino and Dolce and Gabbana. !Carey Mulligan also featured on the front cover of Vogue - said to be the most influential fashion magazine - in her Prada costume, promoting The Great Gatsby.

Downton Abbey and Sherlock both had big influences on fashion, with a mix of traditional elements. !The influence of television was clear through the use of key colours and fabrics, mostly the traditional tweeds and velvets, which were a strong trend in Burberry Prorsum, and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Traditional media outlets such as newspapers were previously only printed, however they are now available online and via apps. !Similarly, fashion shows are being streamed live online as they occur. As a result consumers are seeing so much of the industry through these different media sources. !A report from social media analysts Netbase found that the majority of women seek inspiration from Facebook, blogs and image sharing platforms such as Instagram and Pintrest.
