Time for innovationTHERE’S A VERY SUCCINCT REASON we feature progressive, innovative materials handling practitioners on the cover of Modern Materials Handling month after month: We want to showcase the best of the best in materials handling operations, but we also want to inspire the late adapters—a goal of any forward-thinking publication.

There are a few common characteristics that we fi nd in these innovation leaders. First, they very rarely make snap decisions to apply a new technology or automate without weigh-ing the ROI and measuring the ultimate benefi t to their company. In fact, these visionaries have made advanced materials handling and distribution a core component of the company’s greater supply chain mission.

Second, true innovators never stop innovating, not even during the worst economic cli-mate of their lifetime. They’ve come to realize that innovation doesn’t necessarily come with a huge price tag; in fact, it’s often done best through precisely targeted investment designed to solve the most pressing problems fi rst.

But perhaps the most important thing these innovation leaders have in common is that they read Modern and keep up with industry news daily on mmh.com. And this year we’ve set out to keep that ambitious group on the fast track.

In fact, one of the new editorial offerings we’ll feature this year is aptly titled “Big Picture: Where Business Meets Materials Handing.” These new features will be written by Executive Editor Bob Trebilcock and will offer a closer look at how true innovators have created equip-ment, systems and automation plans that are weaved into a long-term supply chain strategy. Consider these a rallying cry for managers currently making the case for materials handling investment.

On top of the Big Picture, I’m pleased to announce that marketers will also see several Vir-tual Conferences on the 2010 editorial calendar. Much like a live event, this relatively new plat-form connects marketers and materials handling professionals in real time from the comfort of their own facility. In fact, over 3,500 readers have taken advantage of our time-friendly Virtual Conferences in 2009—a number that is sure to grow in 2010 as time and budget constraints keep readers grounded.

And while our new Virtual Conferences and many Print/Web events will put marketers in front of those innovation leaders online, Modern will also be producing the most respected editorial in the market in its stalwart print publication. You’ll fi nd the specifi c focus of our completely staff-reported System Reports, Best Practices, Information Management and Lift Truck features and columns listed on our 2010 Editorial Calendar.

For 2010 it’s clear: The pressure on materials handling professionals to innovate and invest has never been greater; and value of the relevant management guidance offered by Modern Materials Handling has never been higher. In this Media Kit you’ll fi nd all of the infor-mation you need to put your marketing message into the most dynamic advertising environ-ment in the materials handling industry. I look forward to working with you in 2010.

Companies exhibiting at NA08 have a variety of reasons for being here. From expanding their brand presence to introducing new products, exhibitors hope to generate new business opportunities. More than 180 companies spent the week

exhibiting at their first NA show, and some made quite an impression. “We are absolutely delighted by the number

of new companies choosing to exhibit their solutions at NA 2008,” said John Nofsinger, CEO of the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), sponsor of the show. In Booth 1223, envirOpak Inc. is exhibiting

a new slip tray pallet and easy-fold slip sheets used for the hand-loading of small and large bags and boxes in automatic palletizers, said Ben Trickett, sales and marketing director.“The products are a direct replacement for

pallets, including wood, metal and plastic,” Trickett explained. “They’re similar to a slip sheet but eliminate problems associated with slip sheets, such as push-pulls that can cause

leaking hydraulic lines.”A first-time exhibitor, envirOpak decided to invest in a booth at NA for the opportunity to expose the benefits of their product lines to the maximum number of businesses possible—par-ticularly those seeking to reduce their environ-mental impact.

“With the troubled economy, our products’ lightweight design allows a savings on fuel, and they’re made from 100% recyclable material, gen-erating cost savings and reducing the consumption of wood to make new pallets,” added Trickett.Fuel-cell maker Plug Power Inc. (Booth 2647)

acquired General Hydrogen and its booth last year, said Warren Brower, product marketing manager. The company’s GenDrive hydrogen fuel cell power units replace lead-acid bat-teries in lift trucks used in high-throughput warehousing, distribution, and manufacturing operations.

“We work very closely with lift truck OEMs and

The exit signs say it all: Thanks for coming to NA08. See you at ProMat09. With the Cleveland show winding down, all eyes are on Chicago next January. If early numbers are an indicator of what’s to come, the show is on track to be the biggest ProMat ever, according to Tom Carbott, vice president of sales for the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), host of the show.

“After the space draw last November, we were significant-ly in front of our numbers from the previous show,” Carbott said. “We’re projecting to have more than 800 exhibitors and in excess of 300,000 square feet of exhibition space.” There were 87 exhibitors here at NA08 that had never exhibited at NA, ProMat or another MHIA event. This is another trend that Carbott expects to continue at ProMat. “We’re seeing companies enter the materials handling industry from a number of sec-
