St Paul’s Cathedral, built by Sir Christopher Wren, was

where Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.

Europe’s largest capital city, with a multicultural population of around nine million, lies in the south-east corner of England, straddling the River Thames which ends its 344km journey at the North Sea.

London’s history can be traced right back to the Roman conquest of 43AD. In the 11th century it replaced Winchester as the capital of England.

Its continued rise to global prominence has not been without challenge and tragedy. Half of the population was wiped out by disease between 1348 and 1350, a level of devastation which was repeated with the Great Plague in 1665 when 100,000 Londoners lost their lives. A year later, came the Great Fire of London, the only positive of which was the rebuilding that took place, most notably by Sir Christopher Wren, the architect responsible for St Paul’s Cathedral, the most famous of his 52 churches.

St Paul’s, where Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, was one of the targets during the war-time bombing of London in 1940 (known as the Blitz) that devastated the capital’s finance district (aka the City) and parts of the East End.

These days the City (also known as the Square Mile) is one of the world’s most important financial centres and home to some spectacular modern architecture such as The Gherkin. Nearby, close to London Bridge, is an even more striking building, The Shard.

Close to the City, east London is the place for quirky, trendy shops, bars, galleries and eateries and wall-to-wall hipsters with beards that WG Grace would have been proud of.

WELCOME TO LONDONEven first-time visitors to London will feel a degree of familiarity with this vast, sprawling metropolis, such is the plethora of globally recognised, iconic landmarks, buildings and streets.

Trafalgar Square, with Nelson’s Column

at its centre, is the heart of London.

National Gallery, Trafalgar Square

Moving west along the river, you’ll find Westminster, which is home to the Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben clock tower, possibly London’s most famous landmark.

Westminster Abbey, scene of many royal weddings and the Queen’s coronation in 1953, is a short walk from Buckingham Palace, the monarch’s main residence, nestled in between Green Park and St James’s Park. Northwards across Green Park takes you into Mayfair, with its high-end shops and hotels including the Ritz.

You are now in the heart of London, close to Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square with Nelson’s Column at its centre and accompanied by the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. Further north still is Regent’s Park and Lord’s but hop over the river (via Waterloo or Vauxhall Bridge) and you will come to The Oval before you know it.

Towards the west is Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, which contains a memorial to Princess Diana, and the Royal Albert Hall. This is the royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Check out the King’s Road for shopping.

North-west of here are the fashionable areas of Notting Hill (immortalised in the film of the same name starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts as well as home to the annual Carnival that celebrates Caribbean culture) and Holland Park. Great for people watching, there are cafés and restaurants aplenty as well as the world’s largest antiques market in Portobello Road.

One of the beauties of London is its diversity. Venturing beyond the well-trodden tourist trails of the centre can pay dividends.

Places of worship, such as churches, gurdwaras, mosques, synagogues and temples can be found in many areas of the city. For more information, please contact your hotel reception.

What are your favourite parts of London? When you’re in the players’ viewing area at The Oval, you can see many of the landmarks such as the MI6 building, made famous in James Bond movies, and the Coca-Cola London Eye. You very much know you’re in the capital. I really like that. I like that this is a city that’s on the global map, that’s known around the world. Those views – which you can also enjoy from the OCS Stand at the opposite end of the ground from the players’ dressing rooms – add something to The Oval, I think.

What are your favourite places to eat and drink in and around London? The Shard (www.the-shard.com), near London Bridge, has some great places to eat and drink, as well as some fantastic views of London. There’s also a lovely restaurant, Galvin at Windows, at the top of the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane, which also has great views.

Are there are any sites or excursions you’d recommend?I like the River Thames and taking a river cruise is a great way to see the city. You can go all the way down to the O2 Arena and see so many landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral. The South Bank is really busy in summer and is a very cosmopolitan place. Even though I live in a suburb, I feel very much a Londoner and feel proud to have that association with the city.

You have such strong connections with both Lord’s and The Oval – how do you compare the two venues?I feel very fortunate to have played at two fantastic grounds – 14 years at Lord’s and 11 at The Oval. I’m aware of the histories of the clubs, Middlesex and Surrey, but also MCC and the traditions at Lord’s. That was always a very important aspect of playing at Lord’s – you turned up in jacket and tie and when I first started, in 1987, you had to wear whites in the nets. But that was fine because we were at Lord’s and it had standards and expectations. It actually felt a bit odd when we switched to wearing training kit.

Coming through Middlesex schoolboys, Lord’s was always very special but I was also quite happy to leave when I did and head to The Oval in 2001. The Oval is a fantastic place to bat. Lord’s is different – you have the slope from the Grandstand towards the Tavern side and then you add in English conditions of seam and swing, Lord’s can be a very difficult place to bat. None of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara or Ricky Ponting made a Test century there.

What are your favourite performances at those two grounds? To get 130 against a very good Australian bowling attack at The Oval in 2001 is an obvious personal highlight. At Lord’s, the one-day final in 1988. To play in that match so early in my career was special. [Ramprakash, two days before his 19th birthday, scored 57 and was player of the match as Middlesex beat Worcestershire].

Who are your favourite Middlesex and Surrey cricket personalities?Mike Gatting had a huge influence on my career. He was England captain when I joined Middlesex in 1987. I’d met him once before when I was 15 and he’d given me a pair of batting gloves. He was very encouraging all through my career. He showed a lot of faith in me, which was so important.

At Surrey, I’d have to say Alec Stewart. I first came across him in 1987 when I joined Middlesex and we played a practice match at The Oval. A spinner came on and Alec stood up to the stumps. He looked immaculate in his Surrey cap as he continued to do throughout his career. I was fully expecting a few words but actually he was OK and just made conversation. Then I was lucky enough to play with him for England and then played with him at Surrey in a very successful period. We continue to be good friends and he’s gone on to have this magnificent success as director of cricket.

AirThe UK’s two busiest airports are London Heathrow (the world’s sixth busiest) and London Gatwick. Heathrow, to the west of the city, has two Underground (Tube) stations depending on which terminal you arrive at. There is also the quicker, but more expensive, Heathrow Express train that takes about 15 minutes into London Paddington. The Gatwick Express takes 30 minutes into London Victoria. Alternatively, Southern Rail runs cheaper, more frequent, services to and from Gatwick. There are also London airports at City (in the Docklands area of east London), Luton to the north, and Stansted to the east.

TrainThere are a number of different mainline stations serving different areas of the country. In terms of the tournament’s venue cities, Euston serves Birmingham (1h 30m) and Manchester (2h 05m); King’s Cross is for Leeds (2h 15m), Durham (2h 55m) and Newcastle (2h 50m); St Pancras for Nottingham (1h 45m); Paddington for Bristol (1h 45m), Taunton (1h 45m) and Cardiff (2h 05m); Waterloo for Southampton (1h 15m). Check www.nationalrail.co.uk or www.trainline.com for timetables and tickets. In addition, Liverpool Street serves the east (including Cambridge), Victoria and London Bridge the south east. Marylebone runs commuter services north-west of London to Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire (and also to Birmingham).

ARRIVING IN LONDON

UndergroundThe Tube, as it is more commonly known, has 11 colour coded lines that carry just under five million passengers a day. The network can be busy at peak times but it is a hugely efficient and useful travel option. There are various ticketing options including pre-pay smart cards (Oyster), contactless debit card, Apple Pay or Android Pay. Check out www.tfl.gov.uk for journey planning.

BusThe red double-decker bus is a globally renowned symbol of the city can be a relaxing way of getting around while taking in some sights or just watching the city go about its daily life along the way. There are many routes and options so check www.tfl.gov.uk for journey planning.

GETTING AROUND

UberUber is another convenient and popular way of getting around. The passenger App can be downloaded from www.uber.com/ae/en/ride. London’s famous taxis (black cabs) can be booked in advance, hailed on the street, or picked up from designated taxi ranks.

BoatThere is no more civilised way to travel and see some of London’s most iconic landmarks than on one of the six River Bus routes that run along the Thames from Putney in the west to Woolwich in the east. Visit www.tfl.gov.uk/modes/river for more information.

CyclingLondon has a growing network of cycle routes and there are an increasing number of roadside cycle lanes and routes through parks. For as little as £2 you can hire a Santander Cycle from docking stations all over the city. You can download the Santander Cycles app or visit www.tfl.gov.uk/modes/cycling/santander-cycles.

CarLondon roads are very busy, we would recommend that you use public transport where possible. If you do decide to drive be aware that a congestion charge operates in central London (www.tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/congestion-charge/congestion-charge-zone)..

GETTING TO THE VENUESLORD’STube: The nearest station is St John’s Wood (Jubilee Line; six minutes’ walk) but it does get very busy on match days so other options are Baker Street (Jubilee Line; 15 minutes’ walk) or Marylebone (Bakerloo Line; 15 minutes’ walk).

Bus: Route numbers 13 (North Finchley to Victoria) and 113 (Edgware to Oxford Circus) stop on Wellington Road by the ground.

THE OVALTube: The nearest station is Oval (Northern Line; 100m from main entrance) but Vauxhall (Victoria Line; seven minutes’ walk) is more conveniently placed for the Alec Stewart Gate where the media entrance is located. Vauxhall is also a stopping point for many overground train routes that flow from Waterloo into the suburbs of south London.

Bus: Route numbers 36 (Queen’s Park to New Cross), 185 (Lewisham to Victoria) and 436 (Lewisham to Battersea Park) stop right by the ground.

InformationThe Transport for London website (www.tfl.gov.uk) is a very user-friendly journey planning option. It is also worth following one or more of their Twitter accounts (www.twitter.com/tfl; www.twitter.com/tflrail; www.twitter.com/tfltravelalerts) for the latest updates.

LORD’SKnown the world over as ‘the home of cricket’, Lord’s is one of Britain’s iconic sporting venues, alongside Wembley (football), Twickenham (rugby union) and Wimbledon (tennis).

It has hosted more Test matches (137) than any other ground in the world, staged four ICC Cricket World Cup finals (1975, 1979, 1983, 1999), an ICC T20 World Cup final (2009), two ICC Women’s World Cup finals (1993, 2017) and even the Olympic archery tournament in 2012.

Middlesex Cricket have played their home matches at Lord’s since 1877 and the ground has also staged a range of other cricketing contests including English county cup finals, the annual Eton v Harrow school match, and high-profile charity fixtures such as the Tsunami Relief Fund game in 2005 and the Hurricane Relief T20 Challenge in 2018.

This ground is the third to have the name Lord’s. The first was established in 1787, by Yorkshire-born businessman Thomas Lord, at Dorset Square (near Marylebone Station) and then close to the present site in 1809.

The ground is owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), whose distinctive red and yellow colours adorn the ties worn by members in the grand Victorian pavilion where there is a strict dress code.

The pavilion, built in 1890 by Thomas Verity, is a Grade II listed building and houses the players’ dressing rooms on the first floor from where they pass through the Long Room, with walls adorned with historic paintings, before emerging out onto the field.

The playing area slopes around 2.5m from right to left as you look from the Media Centre, creating a unique challenge for batsmen and bowlers.

Behind the pavilion is located the MCC museum which holds a tiny terracotta urn, better known as The Ashes.

Lord’s has staged four ICC Cricket World Cup

finals, most recently in 1999 when Australia

triumphed.

2120

Page 12: MEDIA KIT LONDON · 2019-02-15 · London Eye. You very much know you’re in the capital. I really like that. I like that this is a city that’s on the global map, that’s known

In among all the history and tradition, though, Lord’s is notable for some ultra-modern architecture too, such as the striking media centre, which was built for the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Australia won that tournament and they also appeared in the first ever final back in 1975, which is still one of the most memorable matches ever played at the ground. On a glorious, sun-kissed June day, in front of a packed house, the Windies triumphed thrillingly by 17 runs.

Australians have tended to enjoy Lord’s and were undefeated in 18 successive Tests from 1938 and 2005.

Of the six eight-wicket hauls in Tests at Lord’s, three are by Australians, two remarkably by the same man in the same match. Bob Massie’s 16 wickets with his unplayable swing remains one of the most astonishing debut performances in Test history.

The other Aussie eight-for was in 1997 by Glenn McGrath, whose 26 wickets puts him joint highest overseas wicket-taker with Sir Richard Hadlee.

England’s Jimmy Anderson holds the overall record with 103 wickets which makes him the only pace bowler ever to take more than 100 wickets on a single ground.

Graham Gooch heads up the Test run-scorers list with 2,105, a haul that includes his hefty contribution of 333 in 1990 (not forgetting his 123 in the second innings).

That Test was the fourth played at Lord’s by Indian great Dilip Vengsarkar and the only one in which he failed to score a century following three successive hundreds in 1979, 1982 and 1986.

Vengsarkar was part of the squad, though did not play in the final, back in 1983 when India stunned the cricketing world at Lord’s to deny the West Indies a third consecutive World Cup title.

Lord’s is also home to the offices of the England and Wales Cricket Board and was headquarters of the ICC from 1909 until its move to Dubai in 2005.

Lord’s has hosted two ICC Women’s World Cup finals, most recently in 2017 when England beat India in front

of a packed house.

Middlesex are unusual in the county game in that they do not own their own home ground.

MIDDLESEX CRICKET

a player came at the end of the 1920 season, his last as a player, when he led Middlesex to their second Championship title and their first for 17 years.

The triumph was sealed in the final match of the season in front a packed house at Lord’s against their London rivals Surrey – the perfect finish to a career.

Middlesex won the Championship again the following year but only once again in the next 56 years. The 1947 season belonged to two batsmen, whose names are forever linked and are these days attached to the Lord’s stands located either side of the media centre at the Nursery End of the ground.

They are mere tenants of MCC at Lord’s – but what a place to call home! The unrivalled pulling power of the most famous ground in the world has undoubtedly helped Middlesex attract players and also provide an appealing shop window for those trying to impress the decision-makers in the English game.

One of those decision-makers, George ‘Gubby’ Allen played in the infamous Bodyline series in 1932-33 though refused to carry out the controversial tactics of captain Douglas Jardine. Allen himself led the side in the late 1930s, was chairman of selectors in the 1950s and president of both MCC and Middlesex. He lived in a flat behind the pavilion at Lord’s and was an ever-present, influential figure at the ground until his death in 1989. He has a stand at Lord’s named after him.

Another significant figure to be afforded that honour is Pelham ‘Plum’ Warner, who was the manager of the England side in Australia on the Bodyline tour. His finest moment as

Mike Brearley’s progressive

man-management and imaginative tactics

were an irresistible combination.

2726

Page 15: MEDIA KIT LONDON · 2019-02-15 · London Eye. You very much know you’re in the capital. I really like that. I like that this is a city that’s on the global map, that’s known

Toby Roland-Jones took a hat-trick in the final

minutes of the 2016 season to bring Middlesex their first Championship title

since 1993.

As Britain was dusting itself down after the effects of the 1939-45 War, Denis Compton and Bill Edrich provided joy and inspiration to thousands with their epic run-scoring. Compton, with his good looks and playboy lifestyle, became a huge celebrity.

Compton scored 18 centuries for Middlesex and England (against South Africa) that summer, more than anyone in a first-class season before or since. Between them, they amassed 7,355 runs, more than 5,000 of them for Middlesex.

And yet that 1947 title was the last the county would win until 1976. They had some great players but they were rarely moulded into a winning team.

That sense of under-achievement changed with the arrival in the early 1970s as captain of Mike Brearley, an opening batsman who had given up professional cricket to become a university lecturer. Persuaded to return to Lord’s as captain, his progressive man-management skills and imaginative tactics were an irresistible combination.

Talented players such as batsman and future captain Mike Gatting, and spinners John Emburey and Phil Edmonds started to emerge. In 1980, when they won two trophies, Middlesex had one of the great county bowling attacks, led by powerful Windies paceman Wayne Daniel. The star, though, was South Africa’s Vince van der Bijl, who would later

become the ICC’s umpires and referees manager. In his only season in England, van der Bijl swung and seamed his way to 85 Championship wickets at 14.

When Brearley retired after another triumph in 1982, Gatting took over and provided a seamless transition. More homegrown talent came through – the likes of seamer Angus Fraser, spinner Phil Tufnell and stylish batsman Mark Ramprakash.

Between 1976 and 1993 Middlesex won 13 trophies outright (and shared a Championship) in first-class and one-day formats.

The 1993 Championship was Middlesex’s last for 23 years (they did win the T20 tournament in 2008) until 2016 when they lifted the trophy at Lord’s in the final match of the season. Seamer Toby Roland-Jones took a hat-trick in the final minutes of the season to defeat contenders Yorkshire, who themselves were bidding for a third straight title.

The glory faded quickly, though, as the county were relegated from Division One of the Championship in 2017 and failed to win promotion in 2018. The appointment of Stuart Law, former coach of Bangladesh and the Windies, for 2019 brought hopes of a change of fortune, not least in the white-ball formats.

THE OVALThe Oval’s varied sporting heritage is unmatched by any other venue in the country.

In 1880, the ground staged the first Test match in the United Kingdom, but it was already well established as a major sporting hub, having hosted the first unofficial international football match between England and Scotland in 1870 and two years later the first ever FA Cup final. The same year The Oval also staged the first rugby union international to be played in England, between England and Scotland.

During World War II, The Oval was requisitioned, initially housing anti-aircraft searchlights. It was then turned into a potential prisoner-of-war camp, but was never actually used for this purpose.

The ground staged its inaugural first-class match in 1846 and its first international in 1880 when England played Australia in the first Test match to be held in England.

England’s narrow defeat to Australia in the 1882 Test prompted the Sporting Times newspaper to run a mock obituary, which led to the creation of the ‘Ashes’.

The Oval has a stronger connection with Anglo-Australian Test cricket than possibly any other English ground.

This was where, in 1938, Len Hutton scored 364, which was the highest Test score until Garry Sobers beat it in 1958 and it remains England’s highest individual total.

A decade later Don Bradman needed only four runs in last Test innings to finish his career with an average of 100, but instead was bowled for a duck by leg-spinner Eric Hollies.

The migrant populations from the Caribbean that settled in areas close to The Oval, including Brixton, took such delight in supporting the Windies that the side’s revered skipper Clive Lloyd used to say playing there was like a home game for his side.

In 1976, Michael Holding blew England’s batting away with 14 wickets in a 231-run victory that secured a 3-0 series win. Viv Richards also wowed the crowds with a sensational 291.

Windies skipper Clive Lloyd said

playing at The Oval was like a home game

for his side.

Page 18: MEDIA KIT LONDON · 2019-02-15 · London Eye. You very much know you’re in the capital. I really like that. I like that this is a city that’s on the global map, that’s known

The Oval pitch has had the reputation over the years of favouring fast bowlers and batsmen. The ‘square’ or ‘table’ of playing strips stretches right across the outfield meaning the ball can race away to the square boundaries.

The Windies also came out on top in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2004, held at The Oval, when Brian Lara’s side beat hosts England.

The ground also holds significant memories for India and Pakistan, both of whom won their first Tests in England there.

In 1954, seamer Fazal Mahmood claimed 12 wickets in a 24-run victory for Pakistan, for whom it was also their first Test win outside Asia.

In 2017, it was the seam of Hasan Ali (three for 19) and a century from Fakhar Zaman that took Pakistan to a famous victory over India in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Back in 1971, leg-spinner Bhagwat Chandrasekhar took six second-innings wickets for 38 to skittle England for 101 and set up a four-wicket win for India.

In the ground’s 100th Test – held in 2017 – Moeen Ali became the first player to take a hat-trick in Test cricket at the venue.

Located just south of the River Thames in the busy inner-city area of Kennington, The Oval has a very different vibe to the more genteel feel of Lord’s.

The gasholders around the ground date from 1853, but have ceased to hold any gas. The main one is now a listed building.

The Oval is home to Surrey County Cricket Club, who claimed their 19th County Championship title in 2018 and their first since 2002. They are the second most successful county in history behind Yorkshire. It is also home to the Surrey Stars women’s side, who won the women’s Super League T20 competition for the first time in 2018.

Surrey’s crest is the Prince of Wales feathers because the ground is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate belonging to Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. The Oval has a

stronger connection with Anglo-Australian rivalry than possibly

any other ground.

Surrey are county cricket’s second most successful red-ball team behind Yorkshire.

SURREY COUNTY CRICKET CLUB

Led by the inspirational Stuart Surridge, the Surrey teams of the 1950s contained some of England’s finest and most celebrated players.

The stylish Peter May and gutsy Ken Barrington were pillars of the middle order. The indefatigable Alec Bedser led the bowling attack alongside the ‘spin twins’, Jim Laker and Tony Lock.

In 1955 Surrey won 23 of their 28 matches with the left-armer Lock taking 149 wickets at an average of only 12 and the off-spinner Laker taking 102 at 18.

The following summer, Laker famously took 19 out of the 20 wickets to fall at Old Trafford for England against Australia but what is less well remembered is early in Australia’s tour he took all 10 wickets for 88 in their first innings against Surrey at The Oval.

Morne Morkel will remember 2018 more fondly than most. Five months after signing off his 86-Test career with a 492-run South African victory over Australia, the pace bowler was hitting the winning runs at New Road, Worcester, to secure Surrey their 19th outright County Championship title but their first since 2002.

For many supporters, and for their director of cricket, Alec Stewart, it was a long time coming. Stewart, who is England’s second most capped player with 133 Tests, and his entire family are steeped in Surrey cricket.

Alec first played for the county in 1981 and his father Micky, who was later England’s first team manager, was part of the Surrey sides that won a phenomenal seven Championship titles in succession from 1952 to 1958.

At The Oval, Surrey’s home ground, the media enter through the Alec Stewart Gate while at the opposite end of the ground, the members’ pavilion was recently named in honour of Micky Stewart.

Morne Morkel (pictured with Alec Stewart and the

County Championship trophy) hit the winning runs for Surrey

at Worcester to secure the county’s 19th title.

And yet for all the legends who represented the club during that remarkable era and in their successful periods since, all are overshadowed by one man, Jack Hobbs, the astoundingly prolific opening batsman who became known simply as The Master.

Hobbs first played for Surrey at The Oval in 1905, against a Gentlemen of England side captained by WG Grace and did not finish playing until 1934.

He scored a record 61,760 first-class runs and 199 centuries, 29 more than the next man on the all-time list. Fifteen of those came for England, for whom he averaged almost 57 in his 61 Tests.

However, while it was a great era for Hobbs, it was not a great one for Surrey. Other than their pre-eminence in the 1950s, their other most successful period came at the dawn of the millennium.

Under the feisty captaincy of Adam Hollioake, the Australia-born England all-rounder, Surrey won three Championship titles in 1999, 2000 and 2002. Across all formats they won seven trophies in seven years, including the inaugural Twenty20 Cup in 2003.

They had a mixture of classy home-grown talent like batsmen Mark Butcher (whose father Alan had also played for the county), Graham Thorpe and Alistair Brown; the Bicknell brothers, opening batsman Darren and new-ball bowler

Martin; and a diamond overseas signing, Saqlain Mushtaq, who took 424 first-class wickets at 21 for Surrey.

They had Mark Ramprakash, who had crossed the Thames from Middlesex and delivered vast amounts of runs. He scored almost 16,000 for Surrey in 12 seasons and became the most recent – and possibly last – man to reach a hundred first-class centuries.

Also turning heads was Hollioake’s younger brother, Ben whose exceptional talent and casual demeanour embodied the ‘Surrey strut’, the label that the rest of the county game had enviously stuck to the men from The Oval decades earlier. Tragically, Ben was killed in a road accident in Perth in early 2002 aged 24.

Alec Stewart was part of the Hollioake era and the recent success under his guidance has been the culmination of a desire for homegrown players. The likes of Jason Roy, Rory Burns (the 2018 captain), Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes and Sam and Tom Curran are also making an impact for England as well as Surrey.

MEDIA SERVICESFurther informationIf you have any further questions on media accreditation or match day access please contact the Cricket World Cup 2019 Media Operations team on [email protected].

Media working areas’ opening/closing timings• On match days, the media working

areas will open three hours before the scheduled start of play and will close two hours after the completion of the mixed zone.

• On match days minus one and two, the media working areas will open at 10h00 and close at 18h00 local time ahead of day matches and open at 14h00 and close at 22h00 ahead of day/night matches.

Media accreditationThe media accreditation process for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 ran in two stages.

The first stage (from 8 November 2018 to 14 February 2019) allowed for the written press, photographers and non-rights holding TV and radio broadcasters to apply online for the tournament media accreditation.

The second stage (from 1 to 28 February 2019) allows for the successful media to make requests to attend round-robin matches, as tournament accreditation alone does not provide access to venues on match days.

Requests for the semi-finals and final will be taken once the round-robin matches are complete. Priority will be given to media whose teams will feature in these matches.

To read more about the Media Terms and Conditions, and FAQs on media accreditation, please visit www.cricketworldcup.com/about

Pass collectionMedia can collect their tournament accreditation passes from the accreditation centres located at each match venue.

All passes must be collected in person and you must present photo identification. Accepted forms of identification are passport, national ID card or UK driving licence.

Photo bibsAll accredited photographers will be issued with an individually numbered photo bib along with their accreditation. The photo bib is valid for the duration of the tournament, is not transferable and must be worn at all times when working at a venue.

Venue accessThe accreditation pass itself does not automatically entitle media to entry into the ground on a match day. On match days, passes will be scanned at the gate and only those who have been approved for a place at the match will be granted entry.

Media who have been approved for accreditation will be invited to make match day requests in February 2019 and notifications will begin in March. This will all be done via the media accreditation online portal.

On non-match days access will be granted once the pass has been checked visually.

Mixed ZoneThe Mixed Zone is an area where media can conduct short interviews with players just prior to their departure from the venue. The mixed zone starts after the media conferences with players from the losing side attending first, followed by the players from the winning side.

Each team will be expected to make, at least, four players available and if mixed zone is delivered according to the guidelines, the sides will not be obligated to organise follow-up media interview opportunities the next day. This will be clarified to the media by the ICC.

The mixed zone has separate areas for the rights holding broadcasters and the written press. Non-rights holding broadcasters can also attend the mixed zone along with the written press but are not permitted to record any content. However, to facilitate the NRHs, the ICC will provide unedited video interviews from the Mixed Zone the following morning through the Online Media Zone.

On-site media facilitiesThe following services and facilities will be provided on match days:

• Press box with allocated seating (as per the ICC’s pecking order).

• Pitch-side photo positions, allocated as per the ICC’s pecking order.

On pre-match days, teams training in the morning will hold their media conference after training, while the teams training in the afternoon will hold their conference beforehand. The pre-match conferences are expected to be attended by the captains and/or coaches.

Post-match media conferences will take place immediately after the presentation ceremony, with the losing captain first and followed by the winning captain.

If the player of the match doesn’t attend the post-match media conference, then he will be available to the media in the Mixed Zone.

The service will also benefit journalists who are not attending the tournament as they will be able to produce their own copy with the assistance of the captains’ quotes.
