The Oxford American is one of the South’s most iconic and acclaimed magazines. Published quarterly since 1992, Oxford American has distinguished itself as a periodical dedicated to exploring Southern culture and is a two-time National Magazine Award winner. A must-read for anyone interested in the region, the Oxford American includes features covering cultural, social, and environmental issues; insightful reporting on Southern thought leaders and personalities; and important new fiction and poetry.

Readers can access the digital version of the Oxford American on the e-reader of their choice, including Kindle, iPad, and Nook. Our website, OXFORDAMERICAN.ORG, keeps us in touch with readers between quarterly print issues and is updated weekly, allowing us to keep readers in the loop concerning all things Southern, including the latest developments in music, film, literature, fashion, art, and food.

“The Oxford American may be the liveliest literary magazine in America.”

—The New York Times

“Endearing and polished…thoughtful, surprising…. It vaults into the upper tiers of American magazines.”

—Washington Post

“One of the brightest periodicals to appear on the American literary scene. A fabulous…magazine of passionate, quirky writing about the South.”

—Los Angeles Times

“At a time when culturalists warn that the South has lost its singular personality, that it suffers from regional sameness, the Oxford American presents a compelling argument otherwise.”

—Miami Herald

The best and most original new American magazine of the last 25 years … It’s worth pausing to revisit why this

quarterly matters, and why so many people, not just in the South, will be

paying attention.

—The New York Times

The Oxford American is thriving today because its vision has always been passionate and true. Readers still

yearn for good stories well told.

For a boy coming of age during the 1930s and ’40s, Greenville, Alabama, a small cotton-farming town in the Deep South, was a wonderfully rich environment. Greenville may have been small, but for author Cli! on K. Meador, MD, life growing up there was anything but dull.

In his memoir Sketches of a Small Town…circa 1940, Meador lovingly retells the stories that formed his values and shaped his life.

For young Cli! on and his friends, there’s plenty of trouble to stir up, ranging from a " eld " re, to buzzard hunting, to " ghts between the “country boys” and the “city boys,” and, of course, girls. # ere are also poignant moments, such as the loss of his best friend because of the impenetrable wall of segregation. And there are quirky characters—the town’s sole, somewhat frightening taxi driver; the intriguing, cross-dressing homosexual; and the eccentric agronomy professor turned failed farmer.

Sketches of a Small Town…circa 1940 not only tells one man’s story, but also beautifully captures the remarkable people, places, and events that characterized a unique lifestyle in a bygone era.

M

“What we have here is a poignant, very funny, yet respectful look back at small-town life and characters in the Deep South in the ’30s and ’40s, pre-prosperity, before it was a recognized condition. Meador is a Mark Twain without the river and a Garrison Keillor without the snow... and Baptists instead of Lutherans. I loved this book.”

Though it is an autobiography, this book reads like a novel…

plotting and pacing are superb and the humor reminds me of Mark Twain. —Amazon Reviewer
