Regular Season Series: Jets Lead, 15-7

Notable: Including the preseason, New York has defeated the Bengals in five consecutive games since 2008, including three games in the calender year of 2010. With a New York playoff appearance on the line, the Jets defeated Cin-cinnati 37-0, in the last game ever played at the Meadowlands, on January 3, 2010, and earned a postseason game at Paul Brown Stadium. Six days later, the Jets traveled to Cincinnati and defeated the Bengals, 24-14. New York’s final victory over Cincinnati in 2010 came on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, as the Jets again held the Bengals to two scores and defeated them, 26-10. • TE Dustin Keller’s 65 receptions were the third highest by a tight end in the AFC and the most by a Jets tight end since 1988 when Mickey Shuler caught 70 passes. His 815 yards are the fourth-most by a Jets tight end in a season and the most since 1985 when Shuler set the team record with 879. Additionally, Keller’s 12.5 average is the most by a Jets tight end since 1994, when Johnny Mitchell registered a 12.9 average on 58 receptions.

• WR Jeremy Kerley finished the season with a punt return average of 10.9 yards, good for fourth in the AFC. Mike PettineDefensive CoordinatorFourth season with the JetsHas fielded a unit that has held opposing passers to an NFL-low 68.7 quarter-back rating and opponents to the fifth-fewest points (18.8) and second-least yards per game (285.3) since 2009.

The Jets defense has recorded 92 takeaways, the second-most in the AFC since 2009. Prior to Pettine’s arrival, the same unit registered only 76 between 2005-08.

In 2009, his first season as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, Pettine installed a completely new defense and fielded a unit that ranked first in seven catego-ries, including points allowed, total defense and pass defense.

Tony SparanoOffensive CoordinatorFirst season with the JetsJoined the Jets this past January after he served the last four seasons as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

In his first season (2008), he guided the team from a 1-15 record a season earlier, to an 11-5 mark and the AFC East title. Miami’s offense had the sixth-best red zone efficiency (91.2%) in the NFL in 2010 and tied for the ninth in the league for the most drives of 10 or more plays (26).

In 2006, with Sparano as the Dallas Cowboys primary play caller, the team ranked fifth in the NFL in total offense, averaging 360.8 yards per game. Their 425 points was the fourth-highest in the NFL.

Mike WesthoffSpecial Teams Coordinator12th season with the JetsSince joining the Jets in 2001, Westhoff’s unit has annually ranked among the best across the board in overall special teams rankings.

Since he became the special teams coordinator in 2001, seven different play-ers have returned kickoffs for touchdowns including current Jet, Joe McKnight, who set a team record for the longest touchdown when he returned a kick 107 yards in 2011.

MUHAMMAD WILKERSONJets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum made it a point of emphasis to get younger on the defensive front. Last season he selected local product, DL Mu-hammad Wilkerson, who prepped at Linden HS, in the first round.

Wilkerson started Opening Day at defensive end for the Jets, the first time a rookie has started in New York’s base defense in Week One since Dwight Low-ery started at cornerback in 2008, and the first rookie to start for a Rex Ryan defense on Opening Day since DT Haloti Ngata and SS Dawan Landry. Both players started under Ryan in Baltimore in 2006, while he served as the defen-sive coordinator for the Ravens.

Wilkerson registered the first sack of his career when he brought down QB Luke McCown vs. JAX (9/18/11) for a safety. He became the first player to re-cord a safety on his first sack in the NFL since LB Jameel McClain accomplished the feat for a then-Rex Ryan led Baltimore Ravens defense vs. the Oakland Raiders (10/26/08).

KEEPING PACEIn the words of Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan, LB Calvin Pace enjoyed his best sea-son since Ryan became the head coach in 2009. Pace, a versatile defender, pro-duced statistics as a pass rusher (third on team with 4.5 sacks), a tackler (third on the team with 90), and in pass coverage, recording an INT at BUF (11/6/11).

In each of his first three seasons with the Jets, Pace has either led the team in sacks (2009) or ranked second (2008 and 2010). Last season, his 4.5 sacks were third.Since joining the Jets in 2008, Pace has recorded 25 sacks, 11 forced fumbles and two interceptions. For his career, he has 39 sacks, 16 forced fumbles and three interceptions.

AARON “MAYHEM” MAYBINLB Aaron Maybin, nicknamed “Mayhem” in college, had played 26 games prior to joining the New York Jets as a free agent (8/7/11). In those 26 games, he recorded 23 tackles, no sacks and no forced fumbles on defense. After spend-ing three preseason games with the Jets, he was waived before the regular season began and later re-signed as the team prepared for their fourth game of the season at BLT (10/2). Maybin went on to play 13 games with the Green & White and lived up to his nickname, leading the team with six sacks and four forced fumbles. “Mayhem” recorded his first multiple-sack game against his former team, the Buffalo Bills (11/27), when he dropped QB Ryan Fitzpatrick twice.

TACKLING MACHINEIn four seasons, LB David Harris has led the team in tackles three times and finished second with 87 tackles in 2008 despite missing five games. Quarterbacks (4), Returning Starter (1)Coach Matt Cavanaugh:Mark Sanchez established career-highs in completion percentage (56.7%), passing yards (3474), touchdown passes (26) and passer rating (78.1) for the second-consecutive year in 2011. His six rushing touchdowns tied him with Shonn Green for the team lead. It was the second-highest total posted by a quarterback in franchise history, one short of Al Dorow’s team record posted in the inaugural 1960 season. His 26 touchdown passes were tied for the second most in a single season, just three shy of the team record 29 set by Vinny Testaverde in 1998. Sanchez has produced nine comeback wins in the fourth quarter or overtime, the most in the NFL since Week Six of the 2010 season. He signed a three-year contract extension with the Jets in the offseason. The Jets acquired Tim Tebow from the Broncos as the second-team signal caller behind Sanchez and to bolster the Jets ground and pound philosophy. He will also contribute to special teams as a personal protector. Tebow’s 887 rushing yards since entering the league in 2010, trail only Michael Vick for the most among NFL quarterbacks. In the Bronco’s Wild Card victory versus (PIT), Tebow completed 10-of-21 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning 80-yard touchdown pass to WR Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime. 2011 seventh-round selection Greg McElroy enters his second season with the Jets and is third on the depth chart. Matt Simms, the son of former Giants quarterback Phil Simms, signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent and looks to earn playing time this pre-season.

Running Backs (6), Returning Starter (2)Coach Anthony Lynn:Shonn Greene is slated to start at running back again this season after establishing career-highs in every offensive category last season. Greene finished the 2011 season with 1,054 yards and six touchdowns on 253 carries. He recorded his sixth touchdown and second 100-yard effort of the 2011 season when he rushed for 129 yards and a score on 24 carries (5.4 avg.) in the Jets 37-10 victory over KC (12/11). Greene set a single-game high with three rushing touchdowns at WAS (12/4), which was his first multiple touchdown game in the regular season since his rookie season when he rushed for two at OAK (10/25/09). 2010 fourth-round selection, Joe McKnight, rushed for 134 yards on 43 carries. He finished the season with a 31.6 kickoff return average, the highest single-season average in Jets history and the best since Ron Brown’s 32.8 average for the LA Rams in 1985 of any NFL returner with at least 20 returns. McKnight has been responsible for two scores in his career. The first came when he blocked a punt vs. DAL (9/11), which was returned by teammate Isaiah Trufant for a score. The second came when McKnight recorded the longest play in Jets history, a 107-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at BLT (10/2). Third-year fullback John Conner enters as the starter after rushing for 44 yards on 13 carries last season with one touchdown. Bilal Powell made his NFL debut at DEN (11/17) but was inactive for the majority of the season. John Griffin in signed with the Jets in January after spending 2011 with the UFL’s Omaha Knighthawks. Terrance Ganaway was selected in the sixth-round of the 2012 NFL Draft with a compensatory selection.

Wide Receivers (12), Returning Starters (1)Coach Sanjay Lal:Santonio Holmes is the only returning starter at wide receiver, after starting all 16 games last season and recording eight touchdowns, tying for the team-lead and matching his career-high set in 2007. Holmes finished second on the team with 51 receptions and 654 receiving yards. Also returning is 2011 fifth-round selection Jeremy Kerley, who became just the seventh player and only the third rookie in franchise history to record a rush, pass attempt, reception, punt return and kickoff return in the same season. The newest member of the wide receiving corps is 2012 second-round selection Stephen Hill, who is the leading candi-date to start opposite of Holmes. Chaz Schilens joins the Jets after he started 19-of-44 career games, posting 902 yards and seven touchdowns receiving on 72 receptions in four seasons with Oakland. Patrick Turner returns after a season where he contributed eight receptions for 96 yards. Raymond Webber spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve after he signed with TB as an undrafted free agent. Eron Riley returns after spending seven weeks on the active roster, dressing for two games and appearing in one. Dexter Jackson, a 2008 second-round selection by TB, returns for the Jets after spending time on the practice squad. Rounding out the wide receiver group this season are rookies Jordan White, Royce Pollard, Wes Kemp, and Chris Forcier.

Tight Ends (6), Returning Starter (1)Coach Mike Devlin:Dustin Keller enters his fifth season and looks to continue his ascension as one of the best young tight ends in the league. He led the team in receptions (65) and receiving yards (815) in 2011. His 65 receptions were the third-most by a tight end in the AFC and the most by a Jets tight end since 1988 when Mickey Shuler caught 70. His 815 yards are the fourth-most by a Jets tight end in a season and the most since 1985 when Shuler set the team record with 879. Additionally, Keller’s 12.5 average is the most by a Jets tight end since 1994, when Johnny Mitchell registered a 12.9 average on 58 receptions. Former undrafted free agent Jeff Cumberland enters his third season with the Jets looking to see more action after a torn Achilles sidelined him for most of last season. Josh Baker appeared in 11 games last season after he was signed from the practice squad. He caught three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Six-foot-6 Australian rookie Hayden Smith comes to the NFL after a successful career in rugby, where he played on the U.S. Men’s National Team. Rookie Tarren Lloyd and second-year man Dedrick Epps round out the tight ends.

Offensive Line (15), Returning Starters (5)Coach Dave DeGuglielmo:In 2006, Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum focused on the offensive line, selecting LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson fourth overall and C Nick Mangold 29th overall in the NFL draft. Both players are closing in on 100 career starts and have been the anchors for the Jets offensive line. Ferguson earned his third-consec-utive Pro Bowl (09, 10 and 11) nomination last season. He was also named to the 2006 All-Rookie team by Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writer’s Association. Entering his seventh season, Mangold has earned Associated Press All-Pro honors (09, 10), four consecutive Pro Bowl selections (08, 09, 10, 11) and All-Rookie recognition in 2006 as voted by Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writer’s Association. Also on the offensive line is RG Brandon Moore, who is entering his 11th season - all with the Jets. Moore earned his first-career Pro Bowl selection in 2011 and enters the 2012 season as the most experienced lineman with 126 career starts at right guard. LG Matt Slauson has started 32 consecutive games for the Jets at left guard through the past two seasons. RT Wayne Hunter earned the starting position at right tackle last season after his performance during the Jets 2010 playoff run and started all 16 games for the Jets in 2011. Third-year OL Vladimir Ducasse and second-year OL Caleb Schlauderaff provide depth to the line. Ducasse earned his first career start in a 37-10 win vs. KC (12/11/11) in which he helped pave the way for RB Shonn Greene to rush for 129 yards. Schlauderaff also earned his first NFL start last season at NE (10/9). Veteran OT Stephon Heyer signed as a free agent after he played in 12 games with OAK. Sixth-round pick, G Robert Griffin, T Austin Howard, and OL Matt Kroul are competing for a roster spot.

Defensive Line (9), Returning Starters (3)Coach Karl Dunbar:The Jets return all three starters, DT Mike DeVito, NT Sione Po’uha, and END Muhammad Wilkerson. This group will be led by new defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, who joined the team after spending the past six seasons in Minnesota. After an outstanding rookie season in which he posted 53 total tackles, three sacks, two passes defensed and one forced fumble, second year defensive lineman Wilkerson looks to build on his experience as part of a group that has seen an infusion of draft selections in the last two seasons. 2011 Good Guy Award winner, Po’uha, led the group with 55 tackles. After missing four games due to a knee injury, DT Mike DeVito made 11 starts and recorded 34 tackles. Second-year NT Kenrick Ellis is competing for more playing time after an impressive offseason. A third-round selection in 2011, Ellis played in five games and made two starts as a rookie. In the first round of the 2012 draft, the Jets selected Quinton Coples, a defensive end from North Carolina, making him the third consecutive defensive player the Jets have drafted in the first round. DL Marcus Dixon was a key part of the rotation in 2011 and DE Jay Richardson look to find a role in a top-five NFL defense. Martin Tevaseu and undrafted free agents Damon Harrison and Matt Hardison are also looking to earn playing time.

Linebackers (13), Returning Starters (4)Coach Bob Sutton and Mike Smith:This unit returns starters Bart Scott, David Harris, Calvin Pace, and Bryan Thomas. Last season, Harris showed his versatility as he led the team with 117 tackles, tied for the team-lead with four interceptions and finished second with five sacks. Pace finished the year third on the team with 90 tackles and recorded 4.5 sacks, one interception, and one pass defensed. Scott, the hear and soul of the unit, registered 77 tackles, 4.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recov-ered. Aaron Maybin played in 13 games, and recording 15 tackles and leading the team in sacks (6) and forced fumbles (4). He returns this year looking to play his first full season as a New York Jet. Third-round selection Demario Davis, who finished his college career with 230 tackles, seven sacks, four interceptions, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, looks to contribute immediately to the Jets defense. Other returning players such as Josh Mauga, Garrett McIntyre, and Nick Bellore look to provide solid depth to the team. Undrafted rookies Marcus Dowtin and Brett Roy are also vying for roster spots.

Defensive Backs (16), Returning Starters (3)Coach Dennis Thurman and Jim O’Neil:This group is led by All-Pro Darrelle Revis, who has established himself as arguably the game’s premier cornerback. Opposite side of Revis is former Pro-Bowl CB Antonio Cromartie. Both were tied for the team lead with four interceptions a season ago, solidifying a dynamic duo in the defensive backfield. The team will field three safeties with starting experience: returning starter Eric Smith, unrestricted free agents Yeremiah Bell (MIA) and LaRon Landry (WAS). Smith finished second on the Jets with 115 total tackles in 2011. Bell, who has started the last four years in Miami, amassed more than 100 tackles in each of those four sea-sons. Landry, a five-year starter with the Redskins, also brings starting experience and veteran leadership to the team. 2010 first-round selection CB Kyle Wilson, who started six games last season, and CB Ellis Lankster will provide depth. Rookie sixth rounder Josh Bush and rookie seventh rounder S Antonio Allen look to earn roster spots at safety; while Isaiah Trufant, Devon Torrence, and Julian Posey look to do the same at the corner position. Undrafted rookie free agents Donnie Fletcher, Marcus Lott, D’Anton Lynn and Ryan Steed round out the secondary.

Specialists (6), Returning Starters (3)Coach Mike Westhoff and Ben Kotwica:K Nick Folk, who connected on 76 percent of his field goals last year, including a 50-yard game winner against Dallas, returns to the Jets for a third season, but faces competition from veteran kicker Josh Brown who has converted on 28 field goals of 50-yards or more in his career. P T.J. Conley, who placed 32 punts inside the 20-yard line returns, as well as third-year long snapper Tanner Purdum. First-year long snapper Derek Chard comes to the Jets after spending time in Pittsburgh’s training camp in 2011. Travis Baltz looks to earn a roster spot with an impressive offseason.
