The University of South CarolinaAiken was chartered under authoritygranted by the General Assembly ofSouth Carolina and the Aiken CountyCommission for Higher Education in1961 after entering into anagreement with the University ofSouth Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken.
The Aiken Center opened itsdoors in September 1961 to 139students. Temporarily housed inBanksia, a renovated mansion in theCity of Aiken, the Center consisted ofthree full-time faculty members (oneof whom served as Director of theCenter) and one secretary.
Initially, the school offered onlyfreshman and sophomore levelcourses but throughout the sixties, the size and reputation of the Centergrew as word of its excellencespread among its constituents. In1968, the Center underwent aninstitutional self-study and wasaccredited by the SouthernAssociation of Colleges and Schoolsas a branch of the University ofSouth Carolina and as a juniorcollege. The first associate degreeswere awarded in June 1968.
The campus of the USC Aikenmoved from Banksia to its presentsite in 1972 and physical changesbegan to occur rapidly. At first, thepermanent campus consisted of 100acres and one multipurpose buildingwhich housed all universityoperations. A library was completedin 1975 and additional land wasdonated increasing the campus to144 acres. In October 1977, aStudent Activities Center wasopened. A classroom building wasoccupied in 1978 and one year later,an auxiliary services building was
added.An apartment
complex forstudents, PacerDowns, wasready foroccupancy in fallof 1984. Moreconstructionaladditions to thecampus includedcompletion of theEtherredgeCenter, RuthPatrick ScienceEducation Center, the Business and Education Buildingand the Alan B. Miller NursingBuilding. Additional land was acquiredincreasing the campus to 400 acres.
Academic and organizationalchanges also occurred rapidly. Thefaculty formalized its organizationalstructure and redefined its role in thegovernance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganizedtheir governing body and moreprecisely defined their role oncampus; the administration and staffstructures were overhauled andexpanded to meet the demands of thegrowing academic programs.
When the full-time equivalentstudent enrollment reached 1,066 inthe fall of 1975, the Aiken Campuswas permitted to plan for senior levelcourses, as well as create a numberof baccalaureate degree programs. Inthat same year, USCA receivedapproval as a four-year branchcampus by the Board of Trustees ofthe University of South Carolina andUSCA was designated a RecognizedCandidate for Senior CollegeAccreditation. In September 1976, theBoard of Trustees granted academicautonomy to the Aiken Campus. Thefirst bachelor’s degrees were grantedin May 1977 and USCA became afully accredited senior college.
Presently, the college communityis comprised of more than 3,300students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and28 administrators. USCA awardsbachelor’s degrees in more than 20major areas of study, an associate

With six starters and 18letterwinners returning off last year’s37-19 team, the USC Aiken Pacershave some high expectations for the2003 baseball season. Headliningthe class for head coach KennyThomas is the All-American duo ofAshley Farr and DemetrickDrumming.
“There are a lot moreexpectations this year than in thepast,” said Thomas, 96-71 in threeseasons at USCA. “Our number onegoal every year is to win the PeachBelt Conference and our secondgoal is to make it to the NCAARegional. We feel, as tough as thePBC is, if we take care of goal one, then goal two will happen.”
Farr, a 5-10 junior from WestColumbia, SC, was named a First-Team ABCA All-American in 2002after his record breaking first seasonas a Pacer. The outfielder broke sixschool records including battingaverage (.427), sluggingpercentage (.732), hits (94), andRBI (74). He became USCA’sfirst-ever NCAA First-Team All-Americanand was nameda preseasonAll-Americanthis year byCollegiateBaseballMagazine.

high expectations for 2003setting a new school mark with 17home runs in 2002. The secondbaseman was also named apreseason All-American by CollegiateBaseball Magazine.
USCA turned in a highlysuccessful campaign in 2002. The 37wins were the most since the 1993squad went 46-18 and earned a trip tothe Division II College World Series. With a 16-14 mark, the Pacersfinished fifth in the tough PBC, aconference that produced all fourNCAA South Atlantic Region teams aswell as the Division II NationalChampions in Columbus State. Lastseason marked just the third time in11 NCAA seasons that the programappeared in the final Top 30 poll, placing 20th.
Picked fifth in the 2003 PBCpreseason coaches poll, manybaseball experts have taken notice of
the Pacers’ resurgence. Afterclosing out the 2002 season
appearing in the final eightCollegiate BaseballMagazine Top 30 polls,USCA is tabbed 15th in this
year’s preseason ranking. The National College Baseball
Writers Association (NCBWA)has USC Aiken tied for 17th
in its preseason poll whileBaseball America gave thePacers its highest preseasonhonor yet, picking them sixth
in their top 10.“Funny you would be ranked
fifth in your conference, but15th in the nation, but thatspeaks well for the Peach Belt,”said Thomas. “I don’t put muchinto the preseason rankings, but
its fun for the kids and createsexcitement around the program.”
Excitement is something notabsent at J.H. Satcher Field sinceThomas’ arrival. In 2001, the Pacersfinished 14th in Division II inattendance drawing 5,725 fans
through the turnstiles. That numberwas trumped by last year’s total of6,831, placing them 13th in Division II.
“We turned a lot of heads lastyear, but we certainly hope to turn afew more this year,” said Thomas.

Above: Demetrick Drumming is congratulated by the Pacers following one of his schoolrecord 17 home runs in 2002. He was named as ABCA Second-Team All-American.
“One of the hard things aboutrebuilding a program is convincingthe kids not to expect bad things tohappen to them. We have a differentattitude this year, so I am excited.”
PITCHINGUSC Aiken returns eight of 12
pitchers that saw at least 15.0innings of work last season. Withthe addition of four talentedfreshman and five junior collegetransfers, Thomas’ staff of 17 shouldbe a formidable one for the Pacers.
“Our pitching is much better thana year ago,” said Thomas. “We havesome guys banged up, but even still,I think we’ll be much deeper thanwe’ve been in the past.”
Paul Ferrell is one returningweekend starter. With one yearunder his belt, he will be looked tofor a strong sophomore campaign.
David Caison was a perfect 4-0with two saves and a 1.91 ERA in 26relief appearances last year. Withfellow reliever Lee Cromer (4-0, 1.36ERA, 29 appearances) facing theprospect of having to medicallyredshirt with an arm injury, Caisonwill be key for the Pacer bullpen.
Mike Pomaville, a 6-5righthander who transferred fromSpartanburg Methodist, is one of thetalented newcomers that might workhis way into the weekend rotation.
CATCHINGStarting catcher Michael
Snelgrove was back after a solidfreshmanseason, but
w i l l have to sito u t this
season.
“The loss of Snelgrove will hurtus, there’s no question,” said Thomas.“Catching was a real concern for us inthe fall, but Ross and Cunninghamhave stepped it up and we addedStrongman in January, so I feel betterabout our situation.”
Mike Ross redshirted in 2002while Mike Cunningham caught inonly 18 games. Adam Strongman isa freshman from Caledonia, Ontario, thus inexperience behind the plate willbe a big question mark for the Pacers.
INFIELDThe infield might prove to be the
Pacers strongest asset with threestarters back.
Drumming is at second base, junior Tony Hanks returns atshortstop, while sophomore BradleyKey is over at third base.
Drumming was an All-American in2002. Hanks, after a breakout yearbatting .310 with 12 home runs and43 RBI, was named to CollegiateBaseball Magazine’s “Players toWatch in 2003” list. Key hit .296 with10 homers and 47 RBI and was acontender for the conference’sfreshman of the year award.
Justin Williams, a redshirtsophomore, will make the move fromthe outfield in to play first base.
“We felt we were loaded in theoutfield, and with Williams being lefthanded, he seemed like the naturalchoice,” said Thomas.
Fellow redshirt sophomore CaseyCalhoun and freshman Ian
Kowalchuk will alsosee some time inthe infield.
“We haveconfidence inCalhoun to playfirst or third,” saidThomas.“Kowalchuk hascome a long wayas a freshmanand, if he startshitting the ball, will develop into avery good player.”
OUTFIELDIn the outfield, the Pacers will
have a squad that is potent onoffense and solid on defense.Farr, Leroy Walker, and Clint Keownare all returning starters.
Farr will naturally be theoffensive catalyst, but his improveddefense has Thomas happy.
“Farr has gotten much betterdefensively as well as throwing theball,” said Thomas.
Walker and Keown provideexcellent speed in the outfield andon the base paths. Walker led theteam in stolen bases last seasonwith 19. Keown, who missed 23games last season earning Second-Team All-American honors with themen’s basketball team, swiped 11bases. In 2001, he stole a team-best24 bases on 28 attempts.
“There is not a person in theworld that works harder than LeroyWalker,” said Thomas. “And withKeown devoted full-time to baseball, that has really helped him improve.”
