SUMMER GRAND PRIX CALENDAR 2016

WHAT’S NEW IN 2016?

Rule changes• No qualifications will be held during the SGP 2016, only Provisional Competition rounds• All athletes will start in the ski jumping and roller-skiing parts of the competitions• Race Director Lasse Ottesen: „The Nordic Combined Committee decided to take away

the qualification and only conduct PCRs for the summer events in support of the smaller nations. As the summer is not part of the World Cup period system, it’s important to give developing nations the chance to compete to keep them in the discipline in the long run.“

Equipment• Two novelties will be in effect for the summer 2016: the suit has to feature a non-

stretchable strap just above the hip bone, sown horizontally from the zipper to the zipper which must not exceed the body measurement with a maximum tolerance of 3 cm.

• In addition to that, the legs of the under-suit have to be cut above the knee.

„This event is a true highlight for our region!“

With the Summer Grand Prix Opener in Oberwiesenthal coming closer and closer, OC President Peter Riedel gives all the updates on this year’s version of the event.

As in the past years, Oberwiesenthal will host the SGP Opener 2016. How are the preparations going?

Peter Riedel: Preparations are going great. Our OC team has been meeting since January and everybody is really motivated. In these weeks right before the event, the work is picking up speed, obviously. Over 13 nations have entered their athletes already, among them the complete team of the German Ski Federation with local hero Eric Frenzel. This is a big motivation for our helpers and volunteers.

Many things are changing in Oberwiesenthal at the moment. In the last years, athletes could look forward to an overhauled, modernised inrun and a new team village. What will be new for the upcoming edition of the Summer Grand Prix?

Riedel: In mid-August, our new modern fencing system will be in place - this is another step in the direction of hill improvement and having a hill that’s suitable for World Cup events. At the same time, we’re updating our lift which means that there will be a shuttle system in place for the Summer Grand Prix this year. In addition to that, we were able to secure a name sponsor for the event for the first time, the „Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz“. Such a development is the payoff for our successful work in the past.

Another thing that was new in the past year was that the COC Ladies’ Ski Jumping joined the event. How satisfied are you with this new concept?

Riedel: To connect the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix with the COC has proven to be of a lot of value - the combination in this form is a true highlight for our area. The whole region can feel the beneficial effects because the middle-class touristic businesses and hotels also profit from the event.

The timetable will also be new compared to last year. How does the up-to-date plan look like?

Riedel: We tightened the schedule to create a better organisational structure. It’s better to have such an combined event on three instead of four days - especially for all volunteers. I would like to thank them for their commitment already now. For them and for our fans, it’s simply more relaxed to have three days full of action instead of spreading everything to four days.

First Ladies’ Nordic Combined events are planned for the winter of 2018. Is it a thought for the more distant future to include the ladies also at the Summer Grand Prix Opener?

Riedel: We are open to everything and fully support this development. It would be great to bring another highlight to the Fichtelberg!

„The SGP will be the athletic highlight of our anniversary year!“

Right on time for the 20th anniversary of the Alpenarena Villach, the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix returns to the Carinthian venue. OC Secretary General Gerhard Prasser on Nordic Combined’s importance for the region and local hero Philipp Orter.

After a break of one year, Villach is back on the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix calendar. Are you looking forward to a new edition of the competition?

Gerhard Prasser: We managed to bring back the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix to Villach with the support of Kärnten Sports and the city of Villach. We are looking forward to the exciting competitions. We are very very hard on the preparations and our team is highly motivated to give the teams and spectators a great environment.

With the roller-ski track right next to the hill, Villach is a very attractive venue for a summer edition of Nordic Combined and also the spectators liked the event in the past. What are your expectations for this year?

Prasser: The Villacher Alpenarena is one of the few sporting facilities with a roller-ski track right next to the hills. It is also possible to illuminate the whole complex with floodlights and so especially the track is very attractive for high performance athletes in the summer and winter time. But also amateur athletes are allowed to use the track. We’ve had more and more amateur and leisure athletes in the past years and of course we also expect a good share of spectators from this sports-oriented target group.

This year is also a big anniversary for your venue: 20 years of Alpenarena Villach. Was it important to you to have the Summer Grand Prix back on the calendar for this occasion?

Prasser: The last 20 years have seen the Villacher Alpenarena develop into a multifunctional sports arena in which you can also do Hockey, mountain biking, climbing and such next to ski jumping and cross-country skiing. It also has been popular as training facilities, for example the Austrian, German, Italian and Slovenian teams have booked the hills for camps. The Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix will be the athletic highlight of our anniversary year.

Your local hero Philipp Orter had something of a breakthrough year in the World Cup in the past winter with first Top Ten ranks. What do you think he’s capable of at his home venue?

Prasser: We are very happy to be able to give Philipp a big stage with his home crowd. He knows the hill and track very well and of course we’re hoping for a top rank for our local hero. At the Austrian nationals in October 2015, he was able to use his home advantage in the best possible manner and won the title. He’s the main motivator for our young athletes in the Skiläufer-Vereinigung-Villach. It is very important to have a catalyst like him to build up more young athletes for the generations to come.

You have already hosted a FIS Cup ski jumping earlier this year, are there other dates of things that visitors can look forward to?

Prasser: Yes, at the FIS Cup, 150 athletes from 20 nations were on start. In general, Carinthia, being at the intersection of three cultural areas has a lot to offer: sports event, the Carinthian summer, our lakes and mountain experiences. Visitors have a lot to discover in our beautiful country.

„Johannes Rydzek is our biggest star!“Stefan Huber (OC Oberstdorf)

The big Summer Grand Prix finals have had their home in Oberstdorf for the last couple of years and always included at least one victory by local hero Johannes Rydzek in the last five of them. OC Secretary General Stefan Huber on his big star, the importance of the SGP for Oberstdorf and the Youth Cup development.

First of all, congratulations for the successful World Championship bid 2021 - a special boost of extra motivation for all upcoming event?

Stefan Huber: Thank you very much. We are very happy that we have finally gotten the „yes“ to host the World Championships 2021 in Oberstdorf. The excitement and euphoria is tremendous in our team but also in the greater Oberstdorf region. We will use this opportunity to generate important impulses for our young athletes, high performance sports and our training facilities and events.

What can we look forward to in Oberstdorf this summer?

Huber: We will start the roller-ski races right from the ski jumping stadium again, with all the extra effort that means. It is a huge task for the whole team but the atmosphere it generates is just amazing. Especially all the spectators at the last ascent to the stadium generate a very unique „Tour de France“ feeling.

Something’s always going on in Oberstdorf and also the number of summer tourists is high. What kind of importance can an event like the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix have in these kind of surroundings?

Huber: The FIS Summer Grand Prix is important for Oberstdorf on different levels. It’s the touristic summer sports highlight at the Erdinger Arena and a big motivation for all our young athletes as well as the amazing chance to welcome the world’s best Nordic Combined athletes in Oberstdorf. In 2016/17, the Summer Grand Prix fits our top event schedule very well: Four Hills Tournament, Tour de Ski, the pre-World Championships in Ski Flying and the FIS World Cup Ladies’ Ski Jumping. With this kind of schedule we’re able to welcome the world’s elite in all Nordic disciplines in Oberstdorf in the course of the year.

Your local hero Johannes Rydzek has been successful again at his home venue in the past year, his victory series spanning incredible five years now. Can he actually lose at the Erdinger Arena?

Huber: Johannes Rydzek is our biggest star. He motivates the young athletes and takes part in club activities like the Skiclub Oberstdorf club championships or the Kratzer-Lauf whenever his time permits it. He’s very attached to the club and his home and of course he knows his home training venue like the back of his own hand. I’m sure he’s able to use this to his advantage. If he’s in shape, he’ll fight for podium places, for sure. But as usually, the competition is strong and does not sleep.

!22

Page 24: Media Info Booklet SGP Nordic Combined

Oberstdorf has successfully hosted the FIS Youth Cup since 2009. Does it make you a bit proud to see the concept growing and spreading to more venues now?

Huber: It’s fantastic. It is great that the young Nordic Combined athletes, boys and girls, are able to take part in international competitions and have these perfect training conditions at the same time. Every FIS Youth Cup venue has its specific features and highlights. I think it’s very impressive what FIS and the local organising committees have built up in the past two years.

Oberstdorf is also very much in demand as a training base. Did you already manage to sneak a peek at some team or do you already know who will visit you in fall before the season starts in earnest in November?

Huber: Training season is in full swing and we have been able to welcome quite a number of teams for training already. It will be even more busy in October and November when we start offering training with an ice track on the large hill. Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined teams from over 20 nations will be lining up to train in Oberstdorf then. Enjoy Oberstdorf! (laughs).
