PETER M. HOLTCHAIRMAN AND CEO

As far as Peter Holt is concerned, the 2002-03 basketball season couldn’thave been better. The season began with one celebration and ended with another.

In November, the Spurs played their first regular season home game in thecommunity’s brand new arena, the SBC Center – a venue with a design anddecor that celebrates South Texas and features the latest in technology.

David Robinson played his farewell season with passion and poise, drewaccolades and appreciation from fans all across the country, and received theultimate honor from the NBA when the league renamed their community serviceaward to bear his name.

During the regular season, the NBA named Tim Duncan, for the second consecutive year, Most ValuablePlayer, and Head Coach Gregg Popovich Coach of the Year for the first time.

And finally, after a wildly competitive post-season, the Spurs went on to capture their second NBAChampionship title in five years, beating the New Jersey Nets in six games. Truly a season for the ages.

Holt, along with his wife Julianna Hawn Holt, bought into the Spurs ownership group in 1996, and Holtbecame chairman of the board that same year. Under Holt’s franchise leadership, 1999 was a landmarkyear. The Spurs earned their first NBA championship rings and Bexar County voters gave a resounding“yes” on the issue of building what would become the SBC Center. Those events set the stage for thesuccesses of 2002-03.

The great-grandson of Benjamin Holt, inventor of the first crawler-tractor, which became the basis forCaterpillar, Inc., Peter Holt is CEO of San Antonio-based Holt Companies. The firm, which still displaysone of Ben Holt’s early tractors outside its headquarters, owns the largest Caterpillar dealership in theUnited States.

Holt, a native of Peoria, Illinois, lived in San Antonio as a child, later moving to Corpus Christi wherehe graduated from high school. He then served two years in the U.S. Army during which he earned aSilver Star, three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart from his one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. He endedhis military service as a Sergeant E5.

A staunch believer in community service, Holt is proud of the Spurs’ commitment to South Texas andits residents. In 2000, the team earned the Pro Team Community Award awarded by the World SportsHumanitarian Hall of Fame. The award annually goes to the professional sports franchise – basketball, baseball, football or hockey – that best illustrates exceptional community involvement and fosterscommunity pride and spirit.

Among the Spurs’ community efforts are the Spurs/Pizza Hut Drug-Free Youth Basketball League, the team’s participation in the NBA’s Read to Achieve program, the presentation of over $58,000 inscholarships in 2003 to area high school seniors, and the award of grants to nonprofit organizationsseeking funding for programs for disadvantaged youth in South Texas.

Holt’s own efforts away from the basketball arena include a lengthy list of community servicepositions. He has been a member of the World Presidents’ Organization, is on the board of the SanAntonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and is past chairman of the United Way of San Antonio andBexar County.

Today, Holt is busy running his own business while also serving as a corporate board member forChase Bank – San Antonio, board member of Free Trade Alliance San Antonio and the San AntonioEconomic Development Foundation, and board chairman of St. Mary’s Hall, a private school in SanAntonio. He is also a trustee of Trinity University and is on the board of The Trust Company, a nationalbank in San Antonio that specializes in wealth management and fiduciary services. In September 2003,Governor Rick Perry appointed Holt to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

His role as the Spurs CEO and board chairman is still another job, but one that many in the businessworld would take in a heartbeat.

The SBC Center is able to offer diverse events to the community and South Texas due in part to its variousseating capabilities which range from a 3,000 theater setting to 18,500 basketball configuration.

The SBC Center’s successful debut validated the arena’s promise to offer San Antonio and South Texas:Something For Everyone.

Built in what architects call “ranch tech” style, the SBC Center is styled to present a sense of place, bothinside and out. The external view, in addition to its distinctive architecture, features park-like landscapingthat’s both visually appealing and environmentally friendly. Inside, the design continues to capture theSouth Texas ambiance with festive colors and imaginative details.

Adding to the interior appeal is a $1 million collection of fine art produced by the direction of Chairmanand CEO Peter Holt and Julianna Hawn Holt. Some of the collection carries a basketball theme – includingGeorge Cisneros’ “Atomic Spur” sculpture edged in 100 feet of neon and covered in 2,640 twinkling lights.

“We are enormously proud of the SBC Center and what it brings to the community,” said the Spurs'Holt. “We’re proud to have been part of the effort. Now we can provide South Texas with some of the bestsports and entertainment available anywhere in the U.S.”
