Chennai: Chennai: The CBSE’s decision to give three attempts to students to pass class IX and X and grade the extra-curricular credentials of candidates who repeatedly fail in academics has evoked mixed reactions and put greater expectations on teachers of city institutions.

The idea behind implementing this reform based on the scheme of continuous, comprehensive evaluation (CCE) is to ensure that students are not branded as failures in high school solely on the basis of their performance in a three-hour examination. “The new system if flexible. A child who is not good with written answers can be tested orally."

While the new system of evalua tion rings a positive note in the minds of stakeholders in the school education sector, academics argued that in spite of the various teacher training workshops and the great deal of documentation done by the CBSE teachers in putting together a teachers’ manual on CCE, implementing this is not going to be easy. They foresee a lot of teething problems, but acknowledge that it is worth the effort if the objectives are met. Academics also wondered how objective teachers would be when they evaluated the social and emotional skills of a student, as suggested by the CBSE.

Students like Harsh Bhat, a Class IX pupil of a CBSE school in Chennai, is excited about the reform. “My parents classify their

schooldays as the time when they had the most fun. They talk about studying for the joy of learning and playing without worrying about anything. All that seemed alien to me, because of the competition in today’s classroom. But with reforms like these I hope we can have as joyful a schooling as the previous generation,” he said. On the whole, the reforms have triggered a general enthusiasm to take new path in school education.

Class IX papers by Board

In addition to the Class X exams, the CBSE board will now set papers for the two Class IX first & second terms. The board wants to ensure the level of the Class IX paper is the same in all schools across the country. Moreover, with board exams set to become optional from 2011, there will now be a system of continuous comprehensive evaluation in Classes IX and X. “While we have given schools full autonomy and freedom on assessing students for Classes IX and X, we do not want students to lose out because of non-uniformity in the Class IX papers from one school to the next,’’ said a CBSE board official. The Class X first and second term papers will also be set by the CBSE board. It will frame many sets of Class IX and X papers. A school will receive one of these sets at random, based on a unique system of bar codes. Assessment for these papers will be done by the school.

Teachers will now have to justify the marks they give for a particular subject. A lot has been written on the need for child-friendly education that caters to all students, especially those who are poor in studies. But what happens to a student who is brilliant at, say, mathematics, and does not find the curriculum, and the exam papers, challenging enough? In addition to the continuous comprehensive evaluation in Classes IX and X, students who want to test their ‘higher order thinking skills’ can now opt for a proficiency test in a subject of their choice.

Three lifelines to pass

In addition to a child-friendly curriculum and methods of education, the CBSE board is working on creating a childfriendly system of promotions as well. If a Class IX or X student does not make the grade at the end of the year, the child will be given three attempts to pass. For example, if a child does not clear Class IX in March-April, the school can have an assessment test during the vacation. If the child fails the first assessment test, he can be administered a second test a fortnight later, and a third one a fortnight after the second. If a student fails in all three tests, a student may be allowed to clear the year based on his performance in extra-curricular activities. The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) says activities other than academics, such as music or sports should not be looked at as extracurricular, but part

Pune: The Examination Reforms and Continuous and Com prehensive Evaluation (CCE) training for principals and teachers was organised by the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) to clear all doubts about CBSE examination reforms and disseminate information about the changes.

The programme was held from October 27 to 29 at the Global Indian International School (GIIS), Pimpri. Principals and teachers from 66 schools across Maharashtra attended the training that was conducted by the CBSE resource team comprising Ameeta Mulla Wattal, principal, Springdales School , Delhi, and Mukesh Shelat, principal, GIIS, Pune.

The CBSE exam reforms havesparked a fury of debates and speculations about its validity. To lay all doubts among educators to rest, the board has initiated a drive to disseminate all the necessary information about the changes through dialogue and discussion.

The effort of CBSE to provide a leadership and pioneering role in implementing CCE is a major breakthrough which attempts to elevate the status of schools as equal partners of the board.

While evaluation was always seen as an end of the learning exercise, the CCE aims for it to be not only a measure for evaluating the progress and achievement of the learners but also the effectiveness of the teaching materials and methods used for transaction. The interaction proved worth the while and the educators have a daunting task at hand to put the reforms into practice.

“Diwali Sneha Sammelan” as the name suggests, symbolizes universal brotherhood and harmony that should prevail in every corner of India. The campus had a festive look with forty two stalls. Day of Peace” on Sept. 21, 2009. The day highlighted the importance of global cease-fire by portraying the plight of the people of the various countries which are on civil or ethical wars. Students prayed to god for easing out the unrest in these war trodden counties .

Grandparents Day at Mira Model School, B-Block, Janakpuri, New Delhi

Mira Model School organized ‘Grandparents’ Day’ on 23 September, 2009, for students of Class I and II with great pomp and show. The students prepared beautiful handmade cards as invitations and bright decorative wall hangings with photographs of their grandparents as gifts for them. The programme witnessed active participation of both students and grandparents. It included a PPP titled ‘Bond of Love’, a dance show, and a talent show for grandparents.

The grandparents were deeply moved by this gesture and left with wet eyes and blessings for everyone.

Global Vote 2009-WCPRC by Darbari Lal D.A.V. Model

School , Pitampura

DLDAV Model School, Pitampura, contributed its mite to the Global Initiative for the rights of the child by participating in the WCPRC 2009 —World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the child. The school joined hands with 50,000 other Global Friend Schools across 94 countries to vote and elect the winner of the prize of the decade. A movement founded by Swedish organization, Children’s World, the project empowers children to make their voices heard as per their rights in accordance with the UN convention of the Rights of the child.

The principal, Mrs. Anita Wadehra, cast the first ballot and exhorted the students to continue their enthusiastic participation in this Global initiative which made them aware of and appreciate the fruits of liberty, democracy and friendship. She expressed her sincere desire that the students would always espouse and champion the cherished values of liberty and democracy both as enlightened children and as responsible citizens of the world.

International Day of Elderly at Aiswarya Public School, Kollam

Aiswarya Public School, Kalakkode, Kollam district celebrated International Day of Elderly as ‘Grandparent’s Day on 1st October to honour the grand parents of the students.

As many as 200 grand parents were honoured in the function. The inaugural session was followed by a talk on ‘Old Age Health Care’ by the chief guest Dr. Raju, the medical officer Govt. Hospital, Nedungolam. He gave some useful but practical hints to lead a disease-free and healthy life. He physically demonstrated some exercises to keep a strong and healthy body.

Bikaner Sahodaya Schools Complex has organized a teachers workshop on

“Teacher’s Effectiveness and Managing Behavioral Problems in Children” on Sept.

22, 2009 at Army Public School, Bikaner.


The workshop was inaugurated by lighting

of the lamp by Brigadier P.C. Choudhary,

Chairman, APS, Bikaner. Speakers discussed

on ‘Strengthening Primary Education’; ‘Teacher as a Facilitator : Value Education and VBIL, Communication Skills’; ‘An Effort to Understand Children with the help of a Case Study on ADHD’ and ‘Stress in Children’. The workshop was attended by around 50

teachers and Principals.

A meeting of newly evolved Sahodaya

complex Pali took place recently. FR. Susai

Manicam, the Principal of St. Paul’s Sr. Sec. School, Pali took the initiative to call for

the meeting and convened the same ‘The Rising Together’ notion was taken up for

discussion and unanimously approved. The

need was felt as it introduces the relevance

of co-operative learning and collaborative

networking. Student’s representatives

were called upon to address the gathering

on introducing grading systems. Healthy

interaction, effective feedback and rich

sharing of experiences did enhance

the participants for a proactive and

enterprising action in varied field of school

education.

a Sahodaya Schools Declamation Contest

was organized at Sri Guru Harkrishan Sr. Sec. Public School, G.T. Road on the occasion of International Day for preservation of Ozone Layer.

About 20 teams of CBSE Schools from

Amritsar participated . The topic of the contest

was ‘Ozone Layer—Its benefits, concerns and methods of safeguarding it.’ Later the Chief

Guest urged the students to protect the ozone

layer to protect our fragile environment and

this could be done best by planting more and

Sensitization of students to environmental

concerns has always been an endeavour of

Silver Line School. School celebrates ‘Green

Week’ annually to lay adequate emphasis on

critical environmental concerns. The spirit of

partnership came alive when students spread the

message of environment conservation through

self composed poems, poetic ballet, power point

presentations, quiz, plays and nukkad nataks.

would save our green earth. A film show, “The Beautiful People” and “The Blue planet” were

also shown during the week.

l Eco-friendly “Pre-fabricated” quarters were erected in the school campus to reduce ‘Eco-hazards’.

Aiming to arrest the water crunch and misuse of resources, the highly motivated students of this schools organized a “SAVE WATER, SAVE EARTH” campaign within the School Campus, Hostels and Staff Accommodation Area in which a highly commendable effort of spreading awareness on the issue through self made Display Posters by Class VII students, speeches on the issue were organized.

Further, topics concerning “Conservation of Natural Resources and Eco-friendly activities are part of school Inter-house activities viz. Debate, Declamation, Extempore speech, Essay writing etc. This school participated in Regional level CBSE Science Exhibition — 2009 held on 21 & 22 Aug 09 at Rani Laxmi Bai Memorial School, Lucknow. Two students of this school participated in the above mentioned exhibition and exhibited a model on “Recycling of Waste & Solid Waste Material”. The school stood 17th out of 91 schools which participated.

Tree Plantation at Jawahar Vidya Mandir , Ranchi
