In addition to the Class X exams, the CBSE board will now set papers for the two Class IX first & second terms. The board wants to ensure the level of the Class IX paper is the same in all schools across the country. Moreover, with board exams set to become optional from 2011, there will now be a system of continuous comprehensive evaluation in Classes IX and X. “While we have given schools full autonomy and freedom on assessing students for Classes IX and X, we do not want students to lose out because of non-uniformity in the Class IX papers from one school to the next,’’ said a CBSE board official. Scope to score with sports, health & attitude

Earlier, scoring the highest marks in an examination was the sole objective of a secondary school student’s existence. But now thanks to the set of new rules, making the grade will be a participation in physical activities, such as football and yoga, as well as their participation in extra-curricular activities such as music and dance. Kids will also be graded on attitude and personality. So an unhealthy junk-food addict, who does little exercise and studies the whole day, may find his grades a trifle lower than expected, despite straight A’s. If a student is mean and competitive and treats his classmates with scant respect, it’ll also show in his grades whole new ball game. Classes IX and X replacing the CBSE board exams, students will now be shown their corrected assignments and tests. They will be allowed to give teachers feedback on the assessment. Teachers will now have to justify the marks they give for a particular subject. Only after taking into consideration a student’s views on the marks he has received, will the child be given the final grade for the subject. Many feel this brings more transparency in

A lot has been written on the need for child-friendly education that caters to all students, especially those who are poor in studies. But what happens to a student who is brilliant at, say, mathematics, and does not find the curriculum, and the exam papers, challenging enough? In addition to the continuous comprehensive evaluation in Classes IX and X, students who want to test their ‘higher order thinking skills’ can now opt for a proficiency test in a subject of their choice.

Three lifelines to pass

In addition to a child-friendly curriculum and methods of education, the CBSE board is working on creating a childfriendly system of promotions as well. If a Class IX or X student does not make the grade at the end of the year, the child will be given three attempts to pass. For example, if a child does not clear Class IX in March-April, the school can have an assessment test during the vacation. If the child fails the first assessment test, he can be administered a second test a fortnight later, and a third one a fortnight after the second. If a student fails in all three tests, a student may be allowed to clear the year based on his performance in extra-curricular activities. The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) says activities other than academics, such as music or sports should not be looked at as extracurricular, but part

of the curriculum. Educationists say passing a child based on his overall performance in all spheres is a step towards implementing NCF guidelines

CBSE reforms boosting the Indian edu system

Pune: The Examination Reforms and Continuous and Com prehensive Evaluation (CCE) training for principals and teachers was organised by the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) to clear all doubts about CBSE examination reforms and disseminate information about the changes.

The programme was held from October 27 to 29 at the Global Indian International School (GIIS), Pimpri. Principals and teachers from 66 schools across Maharashtra attended the training that was conducted by the CBSE resource team comprising Ameeta Mulla Wattal, principal, Springdales School , Delhi, and Mukesh Shelat, principal, GIIS, Pune.

The CBSE exam reforms havesparked a fury of debates and speculations about its validity. To lay all doubts among educators to rest, the board has initiated a drive to disseminate all the necessary information about the changes through dialogue and discussion.

The effort of CBSE to provide a leadership and pioneering role in implementing CCE is a major breakthrough which attempts to elevate the status of schools as equal partners of the board.

While evaluation was always seen as an end of the learning exercise, the CCE aims for it to be not only a measure for evaluating the progress and achievement of the learners but also the effectiveness of the teaching materials and methods used for transaction. The interaction proved worth the while and the educators have a daunting task at hand to put the reforms into practice.

Awareness Campaign on Girl Child Literacy Day at Vatsalya International School (Borsad)

On 26th August, 2009 the students of class IV, VII and IX of Vatsalya International School, Borsad, carried out an awareness campaign on Girl Child Literacy Day. They travelled to remote villages like Dhasbhasi, Bochasan, Rudel, Bharel, Khanpur, Rampur

and Borsad and performed a skit before the villagers in local dialect to disseminate the message. National Children’s Science Congress Orion International

Orion International School, Bhopal hosted the District level National Children’s science congress on 9th November 2009. Gandhi Jayanthi Celebration at Sishya School, Hosur

address highlighted the various dimensions of

the Mahatma. The facet of Gandhi as Mahatma

was truly inspirational and took the audience

back to the times when India was struggling to

ideologies in the present context and it truly

provided a food for thought to the gathering.

‘Joy of Giving’ week at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public School,

Jubilee Hills, celebrated ‘Joy of Giving’ week.

The staff, students and parents of Bhavan’s

Vidyashram responded to the initiative with

great enthusiasm and cheer. The students

decided to extend the existing school

programs of ‘Shun Plastic’ and ‘Extend Green

Cover’ into their adopted village schools

and surrounding areas. 25 students along

with a nutritionist went to Shalbanapuram,

a nearby village. Through the medium of

theatre, awareness on oral hygiene and good

nutrition was disseminated. The harmful

effects of smoking and consuming alcohol

were elaborated upon. Each household was

gifted a bottle of tooth powder and swine flu

medicines were also distributed free of cost

to the villagers.

Annual Day ‘Saare Jahaan Se Achcha’ at Chavara Vidyapeeth,

Chavara Vidyapeeth Sr. Sec. School run by St. Paul Society of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CM) in collaboration with the CMC sisters celebrated its annual day recently.

The two yoga champs of the school, Sakshi Aggarwal and Navya Gupta contributed significantly to India’s victory at the South East Asian, Yoga Championship, 09 held in Bangkok, Thailand, in the month of August 09. They gave tough competition to the participants from ten countries across Asia i.e. Malaysia, Iran Maurtius, Thailand, China, Japan, Korea, Srilanka and Hong Kong and won the prestigious winning trophy for India. This Yoga prowess has been nurtured into them by the yoga coach of DLF Public School who was the official coach for the entire Team India as well as Team Iran for this championship. Mrs. Rakhi had been selected by the Yoga Confederation of India to lead Team India.

Grandparents Day at Mira Model School, B-Block, Janakpuri, New Delhi

Mira Model School organized ‘Grandparents’ Day’ on 23 September, 2009, for students of Class I and II with great pomp and show. The students prepared beautiful handmade cards as invitations and bright decorative wall hangings with photographs of their grandparents as gifts for them. Global Vote 2009-WCPRC by Darbari Lal D.A.V. Model

DLDAV Model School, Pitampura, contributed its mite to the Global Initiative for the rights of the child by participating in the WCPRC 2009 —World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the child. The school joined hands with 50,000 other Global Friend Schools across 94 countries to vote and elect the winner of the prize of the decade. A movement founded by Swedish organization, Children’s World, the project empowers children to make their voices heard as per their rights in accordance with the UN convention of the Rights of the child.

The principal, Mrs. Anita Wadehra, cast the first ballot and exhorted the students to continue their enthusiastic participation in this Global initiative which made them aware of and appreciate the fruits of liberty, democracy and friendship. International Day of Elderly at Aiswarya Public School, Kollam

Aiswarya Public School, Kalakkode, Kollam district celebrated International Day of Elderly as ‘Grandparent’s Day on 1st October to honour the grand parents of the students.

Silver Line School. School celebrates ‘Green

Week’ annually to lay adequate emphasis on

Debate, Declamation, Extempore speech, Essay writing etc. This school participated in Regional level CBSE Science Exhibition — 2009 held on 21 & 22 Aug 09 at Rani Laxmi Bai Memorial School, Lucknow. Two students of this school participated in the above mentioned exhibition and exhibited a model on “Recycling of Waste & Solid Waste Material”. Tree Plantation at Jawahar Vidya Mandir , Ranchi
