When my parents got divorced, they decided to share me. I livewith my dad and grandparentsduring the week and some week-ends.
My dad is my hero and my verybest friend. I can talk to himabout everything and we sharehobbies together. We love movies, fishing, music, animals, swim-

When I need help in science,my dad draws what I am learningabout on our driveway with col-ored chalk and makes a game outof learning in a way with pic-tures. Because the pictures are socool, people who see it call himDriveway Dad. I call him the bestdad any girl could wish for. Hehas a big heart and he has me.

If you’ve ever wanted to experience lifein the 18th and 19th centuries for an after-noon, the Medford Historical Society hasthe event for you.
Every year, the Historical Society takesone day to transform Kirby’s Mill into atrip back in the time machine for visitors.
Country Day provides an opportunity
for the Historical Society to display all itsunique intricacies and gives local childrenthe opportunity to experience what they’vebeen learning about in history class.
“It’s basically an open house to showcasewhat we have,” chairman of the event John
Hines said.Kirby’s Mill is a common place for class
trips, and for those hands-on students, itenhances the learning experience by allow-ing them to see firsthand what life was likeback then.
This will be the second year the farmmuseum will be open for Country Day.
“We are really trying to push the muse-um this year,” Hines said. “We’ve upgraded
From all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country – our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies can’t seem to win a base-ball game anymore – things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And let’s face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.
Imagine what it must be like to livein Egypt, where there’s still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nation’s
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Con-
gress and where the office of the presi-
dent have functioned and survived for
239 years.
We live in a nation where, for the
most part, we’re free to do as we please.
This simply isn’t the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liber-
ties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms inbattle in Afghanistan and Iraq – and
countless other places abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

Medford Celebrates Founda-
tion, Inc. and Medford Townshiphave jointly announced plans tostage, on Thursday, July 2, thetownship’s traditional Independ-ence Day celebration and fire-works display. For the fourthstraight year, Medford Celebrates,a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporationfounded in 2011 to raise funds andpublic support for major MedfordTownship public events requiringtownship services, has advisedthe township that it has again so-
licited sufficient funds to enablethe township to stage the event atno cost to the municipality.
A large share of the costs of staging the event will be coveredby a substantial donation fromShopRite of Medford, which willgain serve as the presenting spon-sor. “We are fortunate to have re-ceived donations of varying sizesby a number of local businessesand individuals, but ShopRite has
really stepped up to help us out,”
said Celebrates President BobEgan. “We have also obtainedsubstantial donations fromYMCA Camp Ockanickon of Medford, as the kid’s entertain-ment sponsor, and ColumbiaBank as the main stage sponsor. In addition, legal services havebeen donated by Archer & Grein-er, P.C. and accounting servicesby the firm of Padden CooperLLC. Other sponsors are PolymerSolutions, Radwell International,
Inc., PJ Whelihan’s, MedfordFord, Bob Meyer Communities, and Century 21 Meyer Realty.
The 2015 Independence DayCelebration will be held in Free-dom Park on Thursday, July 2,weather permitting. The parkwill open at 6 p.m. and the fire-works show will begin at dusk, approximately 9:15 pm. Friday,July 3 is the rain date.
Columbia Bank has signed on
for this year, with a welcome do-
nation that in and of itself willmake it possible for Celebrates tofund the rental of a stage andsound system and bring backlocal teen rock band, No Commit-ment, which has played to wide-spread popular acclaim at the lasttwo year’s fireworks festivities. The M-Town Jazz Ensemble andthe Medford School of Music willalso perform.
YMCA Camp Ockanickon of Medford will also sponsor and
run a number of activities forchildren aged 2-12.In addition food, beverages and
novelties will be sold by local ven-dors and local companies willman tents and tables to meet thepublic and distribute literatureabout their businesses in theBusiness Expo area.

of all the sponsors, noting thatfund raising is becoming moreand more difficult. “This year, wehave again obtained just enoughpledges to fund the fireworks andpay our other operating expenses, like advertising, website, insur-ance and government fees. With-out the major contributions fromShopRite, Camp Ockanickon andColumbia Bank, we would not beable to stage the event this year,
and we are in jeopardy of losingthe ability to do so in the future, unless we find new sources of revenue.”
As a result, Medford Celebratesis asking people who come to the
fireworks to make a donation.Assistant to the Township
Manager Beth Portocalis ex-plained, “Admission is technical-ly free, but if every family wouldcontribute even a dollar for eachfamily member who comes towatch, we can help assure that wecan keep the fireworks going.”
Egan said that, “With approxi-mately 25,000 to 35,000 people at-tending each year, a dollar a head
would not cover all the costs butwould give us a huge head starton next year. We hope that peopleunderstand that the townshipcannot afford to stage theseevents and that they will not
be possible without public sup-port.”
Donations can be made in per-son on the day of the event or onCelebrates’ website at www.med-fordcelebrates.org.
The Celebrates trustees askanyone interested in serving as aTrustee or assisting with eventsand activities to e-mail [email protected] or call Egan at(609) 519-0841.
DONATIONSContinued from page 11
Donations sought for future events
it from last year.”The farm museum was trans-
formed from a storage barn forthe mill complex, with a wagonshop occupying one side of it. It isacross the street from the milland includes numerous pieces of equipment from the 19th century.
There will be a Civil War reen-actment in which volunteersdemonstrate black powder rifles.
“The action part of the CivilWar is always fun,” Hines said.“Everyone always jumps when
they hear that first rifle go off.”There will also be a blacksmith
shop open, a print shop to demon-
strate handbills, cooking presen-tations and a loom with weaversshowing people how to craft bas-kets.
As Hines acknowledged, it ishard to find people with theseskills today, making this experi-ence an even more unique one forthose who come to check it out.
Out of all the events the Med-ford Historical Society hosts, thisis the best opportunity to tour thebuilding because it will not be
covered in quilts like it was forthe quilt show and it will not bemobbed with people like it will be
for the apple show.“It gives us the opportunity to
let the community know that we
are here and really showcasewhat the Historical Society has,”Hines said.
Country Day will be held onSunday, July 12 from noon until 4p.m. at Kirby's Mill. It will kick off the building being open on Sun-day afternoons from 1-4 p.m.throughout the summer, endingin August. It will be free admis-sion, and visitors will have the op-portunity to buy hot dogs, waterand ice-cold watermelon. For ad-
ditional information on the event, log on towww.medfordhistory.org.

a reality.“The program is based on
inner beauty, as well as poise andpresentation,” Daniella said.
It offers an “All-American spir-it of fun for family and friends.”Emphasis is placed on the impor-tance of gaining self-confidenceand learning new skills, such asgood attitudes about competition,as well as setting and achievingpersonal goals.
Contestants compete in fourcategories, including formal wearmodeling, personal introduction, interview and community serv-ice project.
National American Miss alsooffers optional contests such as
the top model search, talent, ac-tress and much more.
Pageants are held for girls ages4 to 18, in five age groups.
“I compete against my age divi-sion (16-18 years old). There areabout 100 of us,” Daniella said.
All these girls are from NewJersey.
“My favorite part of competingis meeting so many new peoplefrom different parts of New Jer-sey,” Daniella said. “Also showingoff my secret love for big poofydresses.”
The newly crowned Miss Teen (16-18) will receive a $1,000 cashaward, the official crown and ban-ner, a bouquet of roses and air
transportation to compete in thenational pageant at Disneyland inCalifornia.
“She has a great chance of rep-resenting the great state of NewJersey for the entire year,”Daniella’s mother Nina said. “Shewill also tour Hollywood.”
Daniella expressed her grati-tude toward the pageant and whatit meant to her to experiencemaking it this far, but she is notinterested in making this alifestyle.
“The National American MissPageant is a great experience tohave, but living or experiencingthe pageant life once is perfect forme,” Daniella said.
