    Introduction

Mechanics of materials is a branch of applied

mechanics that deals with the behavior of solid

bodies subjected to various types of loading

    A thorough understanding of mechanical

behavior is essential for the safe design of all

    structures

Mechanics of materials is a basic subject in

    many engineering fields

    Strength

Strength is the ability of a material to resist

deformation. The strength of a component is

usually considered based on the maximum

load that can bear before failure is apparent.

    Stress

The intensity of force (that is, the force per

unit area) is called the STRESS

Unit ofStress N/mm2 (Pascal) (commonly denoted by the Greek letter ).

    Difference between stress and pressure??

    Difference between pressure and

    stress

We know that every materials is elastic innature , so when a force is applied it tends todeform and due to this deformation , there is

an internal resistance produced which tends tospring back the molecules to their originalposition and this internal resistance per unitarea is know as STRESS .

Pressure is nothing but force acting on a unitarea .
