BalanceBalanceBalance is the ability to retain the centre of gravity over your base of support. There are two types of balances:
1) Static balanceshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8KgpOnPcx4&feature=channel
2) Dynamic balances http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPkmpyTJJxQ&feature=fvw

Application of ForceApplication of Force
When performing different skills and techniques different forces are applied and resisted.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction (Newton’s third law)
![Page 5: Mechanical Principles Learning Outcomes What is balance, are there different types of balance? What is balance, are there different types of balance? Force](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022082602/5a4d1b877f8b9ab0599bcfaf/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
ForceForceYou must apply force in one direction to move in the opposite direction.
Badminton smash example:Badminton smash example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QlW8_PdYbw&feature=related
Look at the following examples. Explain where force is applied and what direction the person or equipment moves.

Transfer Of WeightTransfer Of Weight
- The transfer of weight allows you to move your body from one place to another. - How well you transfer your weight involves considering how well balanced you are when performing.
![Page 7: Mechanical Principles Learning Outcomes What is balance, are there different types of balance? What is balance, are there different types of balance? Force](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022082602/5a4d1b877f8b9ab0599bcfaf/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Transfer of Weight 2…Transfer of Weight 2…To transfer your weight in any direction, you
must apply a force in the opposite direction.
e.g. badminton overhead clear- push back foot against ground (force), and weight (balance) moves onto front foot (this happens in the Action section of PAR!).

- clip shows- force, balance, transfer of weight, and follow through: 4 mechanical principles that relate to badminton!

Follow throughFollow throughWhen completing different skills and techniques it is important to have a good follow through. A good follow through follows on from the preparation and action phases (PAR).
Examples:1. Kicking a ball in football, the follow through is in the direction of the shot.
2. Striking a ball in badminton, or a shuttle in badminton: In other actions the follow through involves body rotation I.e. golf drive.
3. Throwing a javelin: using force, and follow through in an upwards and outwards direction.
