INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE AND AUTOMOBILE ENGG

The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of a fuel (normally a fossil fuel) occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber. In an internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and -pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine, such as pistons, turbine blades, or a nozzle. This force moves the component over a distance, generating useful mechanical energy.

The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar four-stroke and two-stroke piston engines, along with variants,

Heat and Mass Transfer (HMT)

Heat transfer is a discipline of thermal engineering that concerns the exchange of thermal energy from one physical system to another. Heat transfer is classified into various mechanisms, such as heat conduction, convection, thermal radiation, and phase-change transfer.

All forms of heat transfer may occur in some systems (for example, in transparent fluids like the Earth's atmosphere) at the same time. Heat transfer only occurs because of a temperature-difference driving force and heat flows from the high to the low temperature region.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC)

Refrigeration may be defined as the process of achieving and maintaining a temperature below that of the surroundings, the aim being to cool some product or space to the required temperature.

Air Conditioning refers to the treatment of air so as to simultaneously control its temperature, moisture content, cleanliness, odour and circulation, as required by occupants, a process, or products in the space.

CAD/CAM & GRAPHICS

A broad term that means the use of computer technology to aid in the design, analysis, and manufacture of products.

Advanced CAD/CAM tools merge many different aspects of the product lifecycle management (PLM), including design, finite element analysis (FEA), manufacturing, production planning, product testing with virtual lab models and visualization, product documentation, product support, etc. CAD/CAM encompasses a broad range of tools, both those commercially available and those proprietary to individual engineering firms.

The term CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) is also often used in the context of a software tool that covers a number of engineering functions.

BASIC MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LAB(BME)

Mechanical engineering is a discipline of engineering that applies the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines.

The engineering field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices and more.

STRENGTH OF MATERIAL LAB (SOM)

In materials science, the strength of a material is its ability to withstand an applied stress without failure. The applied stress may be tensile, compressive, or shear. Strength of materials is a subject which deals with loads, deformations and the forces acting on the material. A load applied to a mechanical member will induce internal forces within the member called stresses. Those stresses acting on the material cause deformations of the material.

However, the term strength of materials most often refers to various methods of calculating stresses in structural members, such as beams, columns and shafts. The methods that can be employed to predict the response of a structure under loading and its susceptibility to various failure modes may take into account various properties of the materials other than material (yield or ultimate) strength. For example failure in buckling is dependent on material stiffness (Young's Modulus).

THERMAL ENGG AND GAS DYNAMICS(TEGD)

Thermo-dynamics is the subject of the relation of heat to forces acting between contiguous parts of bodies, and the relation of heat to electrical agency.

Thermodynamics is the study of energies. More specifically, introductory thermodynamics is the study of energy transfer in systems. Classical thermodynamics consists of methods and constructs that are used to “account” for macroscopic energy transfer.

THEORY OF MACHINE (TOM)

The subject Theory of Machines may be defined as that branch of Engineering - Science, which deals with the study of relative motion between the various parts of machine, and forces which act on them. The knowledge of this subject is very essential for an engineer in designing the various parts of a machine.

Sub-Divisions of Theory of Machines

(I)Kinematics

It is that branch of Theory of Machines which deals with the relative motion between the various parts of the machines without forces applying to it.

(II)Dynamics

It is that branch of Theory of Machines which deals with the forces and their effects, while acting upon the machine parts in motion.

(III)Kinetics

It is that branch of Theory of Machines which deals with the inertia forces which arise from the combined effect of the mass and motion of the machine parts.

(IV)Statics

It is that branch of Theory of Machines which deals with the forces and their effects while the machine parts are at rest. The mass of the parts is assumed to be negligible.

MECHANICAL VIBRATION AND NOISE CONTROL (MVNC)

Vibration refers to mechanical oscillations about an equilibrium point. The oscillations may be periodic such as the motion of a pendulum or random such as the movement of a tire on a gravel road.

Vibration is occasionally "desirable". For example the motion of a tuning fork, the reed in a woodwind instrument or harmonica, or the cone of a loudspeaker is desirable vibration, necessary for the correct functioning of the various devices.

1- To find out effect of load on natural frequency of vibrations of a lever pin supported at one end carrying adjustable load on a vertical screwed bar and spring supported at some intermediate point (i) When the dead weight of rods is neglected and (ii) when their dead weight is taken into account .

2- To find out frequency of damped free vibration and rate of decay of vibration-amplitude in the system.

3- To find out natural frequency and damped free frequency of a torsion pendulum and , hence to find out coefficient of damping of the oil

4- To observe the phenomenon of ‘whirl’ in a horizontal light shaft and to determine the critical speed of the shaft.

5- To observe the mode shapes of a spring-connected, double pendulum and hence to demonstrate the phenomenon of beats.

6- To demonstrate the principle of tuned Undamped Dynamic Vibration Absorber and to determine the effect of mass-ratio (of main and auxiliary mass) on the spread of the resulting natural frequencies

7- To take measurements of sound Pressure Level (SPL) and to carry out octave band analysis of a machine using Noise Level Meter.

Fluid mechanics is the study of fluids and the forces on them. (Fluids include liquids, &gases.) Fluid mechanics can be divided into fluid kinematics, the study of fluid motion, and fluid dynamics, the study of the effect of forces on fluid motion, which can further be divided into fluid statics, the study of fluids at rest, and fluid kinetics, the study of fluids in motion

A control system is a device or set of devices to manage, command, direct or regulate the behavior of other devices or systems.

A method of determining quantity, capacity, or dimension. Several systems of measurement exist, each one comprising units whose amounts have been arbitrarily set and agreed upon by specific groups.

DYNAMICS OF MACHINE is a branch of the theory of machines and mechanisms that studies the motion of machines and mechanisms, taking into account the forces acting on them. The dynamics of machines and mechanisms deals with the following basic problems: definition of the laws of motion of the components of mechanisms, control of the motion of the components, determination of frictional losses, determination of the reactions in kinematic pairs, and balancing of machines and mechanisms

WORK SHOP

(1)Casting is a manufacturing process by which a liquid material is usually poured into a mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and then allowed to solidify. The solidified part is also known as a casting, which is ejected or broken out of the mold to complete the process. Casting materials are usually metals or various cold setting materials that cure after mixing two or more components together; examples are epoxy, concrete, plaster and clay. Casting is most often used for making complex shapes that would be otherwise difficult or uneconomical to make by other methods.

(2)Fitting

Any machine, component, piping or tubing part that can attach or connect two or more larger parts. For examples, see coupling, compression fitting or piping and plumbing fittings. The process of applying regression analysis to data.

(3)Welding is the joining of metal of the same or similar kind of metal

And has define as ,The process of joining together two pieces of metal so that bonding accompanied by appreciable interatomic penetration at their original boundary surfaces. The boundaries more or less disappear at the weld, and integrating crystals develop across them. Welding is carried out by the use of heat or pressure or both and with or without added metal. There are many types of welding including Metal Arc,gas welding, Atomic Hydrogen, Submerged Arc, Resistance Butt, Flash, Spot, Stitch, Stud and Projection welding etc.
