Worcestershire Context - 2013
• Persisting health inequalities
• 6 Districts all with varying pockets of deprivation
• Concern re- future community wellbeing
• MECC no longer a local CQUIN
• Increasingly commissioned front-line services
• Need for consistent messages across sectors
We aimed to:
• Support understanding and delivery of MECC across sectors
• Engage front-line services delivered by e.g. Housing Associations, Hostels, Pharmacies and VCS
• Promote well-being using clear positive messages • Raise awareness of factors which affect behaviour
change, self-help opportunities and service provision
What we did 1.
• Built on previous local good work with MECC / and non-clinical ‘Health Chats’ equivalent
• Engaged with Worcestershire Health & Care NHS Trust, University of Worcester, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, PHE, NHS England, CCG’s
• Established a county-wide MECC partnership to support delivery across sectors and an LA Steering Group to progress Health Chats
• Updated Health Chats package with current local data
What we did 2.
• Identified and shared with partners the core information to be included in all MECC and Health Chats sessions in Worcestershire
• Established a process to promote, coordinate, monitor and deliver Health Chats sessions
• WCC Healthy Communities team delivered Health Chats sessions across the county
• Developed and piloted a Train the Trainer (TtT) model
• At registration, delegates may consent to be contacted for research / feedback, to receive Health Chats updates and local health improvement campaign information
Achievements to Date
• In the past 12 months 885 front-line service personnel have participated in a health chats training session
• In addition, 13 people attended one of two pilot TtT sessions: 3 have gone on to deliver health chats sessions to 28 staff within their organisations so far (913 in total)
• 97% of attendees ‘agree/strongly’ agree they understand both the factors that influence & the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle
• 93% of attendees felt confident/very confident to have a ‘health chat’
• Over 500 attendees now receive regular campaign info
2014 – embedding MECC into practice: Work in Progress
• Health Chats added to the 'prospectus' of training offered to WCC commissioned adult services
• Health Chats ‘Train the Trainer’ is a requirement at Level 2 of our Workplace Health and Well-being scheme (WWW)

• Pocket Directory of local services to reduce digital exclusion
• Linking University and NHS Trust intranets to Public Health web-pages
To be continued.....
• Clarify way forward locally, regionally and nationally
• Alignment with DH / PHE
• In 2014 - roll-out of health chats sessions, with emphasis on embedding into existing processes e.g. ‘Train the Trainer’
• Delivery to University of Worcester nursing / care students
