There were smiles all around and a feeling of triumph at the Headfort Arms Hotel in Kells recently, as a beaming group of women presented a cheque of over €15,000 to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Alisha Doyle and Tracey Hughes are the two driving forces behind Flix Reunion Night, an event they worked tirelessly behind to raise money for the cardiac unit of the hospital. The idea came forward in light of the tragic passing of Alisha’s son, two-month old Jamie Doyle in February last year, after being born with heart problems.

“We were delighted and shocked at the response for the Reunion Night” said Alisha.

Over 800 people showed up for the occasion, with some even coming from as far as America and the UK. “The generosity and unity of people just shines through in a time like this, even in this economic climate”. “Every penny will be going to fund a new 25-bed cardiac unit in the hospital” said Tracey. The women completely depended on the kindness of others to help the event happen, with donations of money, services and raffle prizes coming from businesses all over Meath and Dublin. The Headfort Arms Hotel were kind enough to let the girls host the night free of charge in the premises.

Debs season is upon us girls and there is some serious beautification to be done! With all the hype and panic around the situation it can be easy to forget things, but don’t fret because we have Gloss’ top tips to achieve that red carpet, jaw dropping look!

TanTo achieve the perfect gorgeous, sun-kissed glow you have some preparation to do! Whether your applying tan at home or getting a spray tan remember that preparation is the key to getting the most natural and even-looking result. Make sure to shave or wax 24 hours beforehand as shaving or waxing after tan can damage the colouring (no one likes streaky legs!) At this point it’s worth exfoliating using an oil-free product, focussing on your drier areas such as elbows, knees and ankles. XEN-TAN Body Scrub is particularly effective. Finish off by moisturising your body with an oil-free moisturiser.Just before tanning remove any make-up, deodorant, moisturiser or anything else that could create a barrier between your skin and the tan. Lightly apply moisturiser to your dry areas (wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, etc) while avoiding contact with the rest of your body.

If you’re getting a spray tan don’t worry about this next step- During self-application be sure to get a tan mitt too avoid dark palms. XEN-TAN Dark Lotion is an easy to use self-tan with a great smell. Pump tan on too your mitt and start from your feet working your way upwards applying the tan in circular motions, always blending upwards lightly. Always leave your hands until last. As the tan develops on you be sure to wear loose, dark clothing and flip flops. Leave your bra off as they can leave particularly bad marks. Remember that the longer you leave tan on the darker the colour. For best results leave on for eight hours maximum! Once you are happy with your tan, wash it off using warm water which won’t break up the colour. To prolong your tan use a body scrub (such as XEN-TAN Body Scrub) which leaves your skin smooth and prevents any patching.

Make UpAs we all know the key to fantastic make up is great skin!! And if you want to be absolutely glowing just before your big night, then we absolutely recommend the Glam Glow Mud Mask! It’s a 10 minute facial in a jar that will give you immediate camera-ready glowing skin. All the celebs are raving about it in

America and use it on shows such as American Idol just before they do their make up for a live show!

If you are getting your make up professionally applied then be sure to ask for Airbase Airbrush Make Up, as it will give you a flawless finish that will wear all night long! Because it is silicone based, the Airbase Airbrush make up is water and heat resistant which means you can dance the night away and still look as amazing as you did when you got in. And since airbrush make up is applied using an airbrush gun, the make up is non-pore clogging!

Dramatic eyes are a must for a Debs make up look. So why not go for a sultry smokey eye, as dark colours will make your eyes pop in photographs. If you’d rather stay away from dramatic eyes, then try eyeliner with some false eyelashes. Always remember to put on lashings of mascara as no matter what look you decide to go for it’s like the frame on a good picture, helps to focus the eye.

If eyes aren’t want you like to define you can have a lot of fun with lips! There are some gorgeous reds out there at the moment, and really defined lips are seriously in vogue. Sometimes lippy can be a nuisance when you’re out, because you have to keep topping it up but be sure to get a long lasting lip gloss like Mii’s Luscious Lip Sheen in Thrill which will top up your colour while moisturising your lips, making them appear bigger too!

nailsAre entirely up to you! French tipped extensions are great for a classic look, or add colour to match your dress. Or simply stick to a file & polish or Shellac which will give you a glossy high shine finish that will last for 2 weeks! Add nail art for extra detail, and make sure your nails get noticed!

HaiRDebs used to be all about structured upstyles, but not anymore! This season soft, girly curls that are dishevelled are sexy! So whether you are having an upstyle or wearing your hair down, the tumbling curls will give you the basis of your look. Long, big volume curls are the look at the moment, think Lana Del Ray or Blake Lively. Pinning up sections will dress the hair to add an extra touch of youthful glamour.

Accessories like flowers, buns and jewels are still popular in hair, along with head pieces and clip-in extensions. Bring in your accessories and be sure to

have a trial done before the debs so you can try out a couple of different styles. Bring in pictures of hair styles or celebs you like and a picture of your dress will always help to ensure you get the perfect look! Don’t forget that hair products really make the difference in creating that picture-perfect look. We love Sebastian’s Volupt Shampoo and Conditioner, which is great for adding volume to fine hair. It boosts volume without weighing it down and leaves your hair silky soft too touch.

Damp and wet weather can wreak havoc on big hair so to avoid it falling flat or getting frizzy we use Sebastians Whipped Crème Mousse as it’s not like a lot of other mousse’s out there. It’s really, really lightweight and gives great body and volume. We apply it in damp hair and blow dry hair to create nourished curls and sleek waves.

If you’re a fan of DIY, try using it in your hair and blasting hair dry then set your hair with the amazing Velcro Sleep-In Rollers and wake up to great hair! If you’d rather something a bit different then definitely try a big bun, it adds sophisticated glamour too any look and can be done at home using one of the Sleep-In Bun Rings.

All products and services are available in salon at Gloss Blow Dry & Beauty Bar, The Cornmarket, Navan Co Meath. Pop in or call us on 046 9071756!

These five fabulous Meath Mums are bucking the trend when it comes to the recession. They are not waiting for somebody else to create jobs for them – they’re taking matters into their own hands and starting their own business.

Entrepreneur Mums is one of these businesses and it was set up earlier this year by mum of three, Barbara Roche, who has developed a six week “Start your own Business Mum” course for Mums who want to start a home-based business that will work around their family. The course commences on the 11th of September and will run each Tuesday morning for six weeks in the Ardboyne Hotel, Navan. It covers everything from confidence building to generating business ideas, to marketing and selling and tapping into the internet. By the end of the six weeks each mum will have her own business plan which she can put into action at a pace that suits her lifestyle. For more information and to book a place see www.entrepreneurmums.ie.

So how did Barbara come up with the idea of Entrepreneur Mums? “When my youngest child reached two I felt that I wanted to get back to the workplace in some way, but I still wanted to be there for my children. I had seen other people start their own business and then I thought – hey, why can’t I do that too. I didn’t know what sort of business to start at first and then I did some soul searching, talked to others and did lots of research online. I previously worked in various management positions in Human Resources, and had started and implemented numerous projects across a multinational company. During my maternity leave, I also helped my brother who was running his own business – so I got some real practical experience in what is involved when starting and running your own business.”

Barbara has a Degree and Masters in Science, and worked in Guinness laboratories for a number of years. During this time, she went back to college part time and studied Management and Employee Relations in the National College of

Ireland and it was then that she made the transition to Human Resources. “I love working with people and really enjoyed helping others progress in their careers through training and personal development.” Barbara returned to college again while working and studied Training and Development with the Irish Institute of Training and Development, and focused a lot of her time at work putting training plans together to help people further themselves and reach their full potential within the business.

“It was when I looked back on all that I had done previously and thought about what I really enjoyed, that I can up with the idea of Entrepreneur Mums,” says Barbara. “I know from talking to other stay at home mums at the school that they had similar feelings to me, in that they loved being at home but also wanted something more. There is some guilt that comes with even saying that, in that we might seem greedy or ungrateful, but I think we need to get away from this and realise that we can be great mums, but also have that little bit for ourselves. If you think about it, starting your own business actually benefits your whole family in that you are adding financially to the household, taking some pressure off your spouse, feeling better within yourself and being a positive role model for your kids.”The aim of Entrepreneur Mums is to provide training and support to mums to help them take the first steps in starting their own business. Sometimes, however, mums might need an extra bit of help outside of the course to allow them figure out what it is they want and this is where Edel Freeman, a coach with the Entrepreneur Mums team, offers extra support through confidential and collaborative one-to-one coaching sessions. You can contact Edel via [email protected] will also be two special guest speakers on the course –mums who have already started their own successful business. Niamh Scott, from babyshower.ie, has a wonderful online selling all you need to hold a babyshower for the mum-to-

be. She shares her knowledge and experience and gives lots of tips on starting a web based business. Samantha Kelly, from Funky Goddess, who appeared on the Dragons Den in May and won the support of Gavin Duffy with her “Welcome to Womanhood” gift box will also share her knowledge and experience. Samantha is also a social media goddess, with thousands of followers, so she will let you in on her Facebook and Tweeter marketing secrets on the course.

It can be difficult juggling being a mum and having your own business, make no mistake about that. However, apart from offering a welcoming training course, Entrepreneur Mums aim to encourage networks and alliances between mums to help them make the “starting your own business” journey a whole lot easier and more enjoyable. “Work is not only about the financial gain and personal fulfilment, but also about the social bonds that we make along the way. We want to make starting your own business rewarding on every level – because if you are not enjoying it, then it is hard to keep going and make a success of it,” says Barbara, adding “There is definite strength in unity and I believe that this is a powerful message to send to our kids. Mums tend to be very conscience and ethical business people and this builds very strong foundations for future generations entering the business world”.

Entrepreneur Mums “Start your own business, Mum” course starts on the 11th of September in the Ardboyne Hotel, each Tuesday morning from 10-12am for six weeks. Lorraine Barrett, a mum of three from Navan, has already enrolled and says “I’m really looking forward to the course. I’ve had lots of ideas rumbling around my head for a while now, so it will be great to filter them out, meet new people, gain new skills and build a business that fits around my family.” To book your place on the course, log onto www.entrepreneurmums.ie or call Barbara on 086 8620448. You can also follow us on Facebook. Don’t put it off - you only ever regret things that you don’t do!

Arts Kellective Is ‘Opening Doors’.ArTs KellecTive is a new umbrella organisation that aims to bring Kells back into focus as a creative centre in the North East. An exhibition will take place on Saturday August 18th from 6pm to 9pm in The Old Sawmills on Church Lane. The event - which also marks the start of National Heritage week - will serve as the launch of this innovative new Arts group, which includes Visual Artists, Graphic Artists, Arts Educators, Community Artists, Glass Mixed Media Artists, Poets, Musicians and people involved in the Dramatic Arts.

This exciting exhibition will take place in the Courtyard of The Old Sawmill and will include installation work by Ian Rogan and Sarah O’Reilly, glass and photo transparencies works by Fiona Murphy, photographs by Kate Flood, paintings by Robert English and Gwen O’Sullivan and works by Patrick Morris. Excerpts from Mark Smith’s recent succcessful Type Trail will also feature. Other local artists also plan to exhibit, helping to create a strong cross-disciplinary mix of artwork.

Art teacher and Graphic Artist Aileen O’Loughlin has created a new logo and promotional material for Arts Kellective. The Group has been busy completing phase one of a project, which aims to transform The Sawmill into a Creative Centre. The Sawmill courtyard, which is positioned off the historical cobbled Church Lane in Kells, has already been transformed in to an engaging Gallery space.

This lovely building was a hub of activity as both a sawmill and carpentry workshop called T & J Joinery until 2005. The Nevin Family, proprietors of the building, have generously supported the Arts by allocating the building to the group, allowing them to try to re-establish Kells as a creative hub once again. Interestingly, in 1994, artist Fiona Murphy worked in the Carpentry Workshop

and Tony Sheridan, the father (since deceased) helped her create a 10 foot glass and timber piece that is now a sculptural feature in Dublin City University.

The exhibition will provide a treasure trove of interest to all and will also include a poetry recital by local poet Michael McGovern entitled ‘Another Book of Kells’. Local musicians will add to the celebratory occasion. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Arts Kellective is continually growing and welcomes those interested in or working in the Arts to join. Mark Smith, a formative member of the group and who is renowned for his innovative role in local Community Art Projects, adds: “We hope to make Art accessible to all by building the resources and networks that are needed for artistic development of Community Arts.”

As part of the launch, Arts Kellective is running an Art for Kids Weekend, with workshops for children taking place in Kells People’s Resource Centre. These creative workshops, based upon Local Heritage themes, will culminate in a Children’s collaborative Artwork project, a large banner and a Book of Kells by the children that will be something to look out for in prominent areas around the town. As a group, Arts Kellective strives to develop strong links with numerous arts organisations and groups throughout the country and further afield.

“We are presently working on projects that are set to enhance the visual look of Kells,” says Fiona Murphy. “We have worked in collaboration with and with the support of Kells Town Council, Kells Chamber of Commerce, Kells Tourism Forum and The Local Heroes Group. We hope to see you at The Sawmill on August 18th between 6pm and 9pm and we hope that you may discover something that inspires you within our open doors.”

Magdelene Court Fun Day

Jan O’ Sullivan, Minister for Housing and Planning, has announced that the county of Meath is being allocated €1.8 million for 12 new houses. Louth will also be given €2.5 million for 22 new houses, all in order to provide accommodation for those with special housing needs, including the elderly, homeless and those suffering with disabilities.

Ruairi Hanley, a Meath GP and hospital campaigner has demanded an inspection be carried out on Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. Mr. Hanley wrote to the Health Minister James Reilly amid fears of closures at Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan, and reports of overcrowding in Drogheda. He said that at a meeting recently “it was made clear that regional administrators remain determined to reduce acute medical services in Meath”.

The first part of Navan’s new 66-acre Town Park has been delayed until October due to plants, drainage issues and archaeological findings. Cllr Joe Reilly said “most worrying is the time delay and further cost. I understand there could be a minimum delay of three months due to the issues encountered by the developer”. The park was due to be open this summer.

Irish Girl Guides from Co. Meath have been voted Youth Club of The Year by Co. Meath VEC. The Girl Guides celebrated their win in Tayto Park, Ashbourne with a range of other clubs from around the country. The Girl Guides welcomes girls from 5 years old and up and the programme runs from September to June.

Up and coming local band Ivy Joe have been announced as a support act for Mullingar man Bressie at Le Cheile this year. The festival runs from the 3rd – 6th of August with such names as Republic of Loose, Paddy Casey and Neon Wolf making an appearance at the event. Ivy Joe will be headlining the Creans Stage at the grounds in Oldcastle amongst a host of other exciting performances.

The Combines4Charity Group set a new world record last week in Platin, Duleek. 208 combines were set to work on a farm, harvesting winter barley, and reclaiming a record they set in 2009. The event was in aid of such charities as Self-Help Afr ica, The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre, Barnardos and other local charities.

A Navan man and two others have been jailed for extorting €67,000 from a Co. Louth man in 2009. David McDonagh (33) a father of four from Reask Court, Navan, Co Meath, James McDonagh (46), Grange Drive, Muirhevnamore, Dundalk and Gerard Stokes (31), Muirhevnamore, Dundalk, Co Louth, were found guilty at Dundalk Circuit Court of demanding money with menaces from Niall Hearty in July 2009. Eight and 10 year sentences have been given to the men.

AIB has closed its Dunshaughlin and Dunboyne branches this week amid uproar from both towns. The closures, with a further six this October, is being done to as part of a cost-cutting procedure and large scale review of its retail operations. Improvements in technology were among several other issues blamed for the fall in demand of “traditional banking”.

NEWS IN BRIEF

JOhn hand, former principal to St. Oliver Plunkett’s primary school in Navan, has received €500,000 over false allegations that he had removed a prefab building without permission or payment from a Meath school to his home.

Declan McKeever, a farmer in Antylstown, Navan was sued by John Hand for defamation and had an apology read to him at the High Court.

The prefab had been bought by Mr. Hand with his own funds for personal use, and Mr McKeever had falsely claimed that he had used his own machinery to move the structure from the school to Mr. Hand’s house. Mr. McKeever claimed the board of management was not informed and no payments had been made.

The allegation was found to be completely false as in December of 2001, Mr. Hand had bought a prefab worth €1,750 for storage use during extension works being finished to his home.

The apology by Mr. McKeever was read out in proceedings in the High Court, confirming that €175,000 in damages and a further €325,000 would be paid out after the four-year legal battle.

MEath REcovERy and J&S Motor Repairs of Navan have acquired their first new piece of vehicle recovery equipment, a Dyson Enforcer. Jim O’Sullivan started off the business 21 years ago, with son Shane joining forces in 1999. Meath Recovery’s 24 hour service deals with the majority of Leinster and the Greater Dublin Area, with four-vehicle team.

The Enforcer came with all the extras, including a trolley jack, storage, strobe lighting, jump leads and much more, all through Roger Dyson’s 40th anniversary limited edition offer. Dyson, Britain’s leading vehicle recovery systems manufacturer, is to build 40 truck body conversions with ‘no cost upgrades’ – as a thank you to the industry, to mark his four decade anniversary in business. The models are available on a first come, first served basis.

Jim O’ Sullivan said “my son Shane agreed the initial price for the truck, and that’s exactly what we ended up paying. It was a real pleasure working with Roger”.

As well as a host of garages and dealerships, Meath Recovery is also a fully approved contractor to the AA, Hibernian Aviva, AXA, Mondial Assistance, Europ Assistance and MIS Claims.

a nuMbER of food alerts have been issued by the Food Standard Authority of Ireland after several health and safety warnings have emerged. A fortnight ago, an individual in the UK was recovering in hospital with botulism after consuming olives which tested positive for Clostridium botulinum type B toxin, with authorities in England still investigating any distribution to Ireland.

Three days later and two more had cropped up. The first being from mass distributor Nestlé, with a huge recall of mugs from promotional packs after it was found that there was a high risk of cracking with the addition of hot water.

It then came to light that the FSAI was aware of a food supplement called “Hot Blood” being imported into the country for sale directly or online. The work-out food supplement is being withdrawn by German authorities as it contains “novel creatine compounds”, which are prohibited ingredients, and likely to be dangerous without the required assessment.

This sudden outbreak of health threats has no doubt cast a shadow of doubt over shopper’s minds, including the accuracy of precautions being taken by the FSAI.

to cElEbRatE our 20th Birthday we are running an Afternoon Tea Party on the 18th of September in the Ardboyne Hotel. This event will be a lovely happy occasion where people can come together and share our success, also meet old neighbors and make some new friends.

the Event An Afternoon Tea Party on the 18th of September in the Ardboyne Hotel. Tickets will be €20.00 per person, or €15 each for a party of 5 or more. This will include traditional Afternoon Tea and followed by entertainment.Students from local schools will be on hand to assist guests if required. For more information look at www.ageaction.ie/fundraising

We aim to have 250 members and friends of Age Action attend. The friends will include people from Positive Ageing Week Towns, Active Retirement groups around the area, and local nursing home residents. A celebration theme will run throughout the event. In 2012 we celebrate Age Actions 20th Birthday. We will have an exhibition of the work we have done through the last 20 years - A real walk down memory lane. The money raised will go to help fund our Care and Repair Programme where we call to people’s houses and carry out small repairs and maintaince for them free of charge.

The BenefitAmongst the fun and frivolity of the Afternoon Tea event there is a serious message within this gathering of friends.

The money raised for Age Action at the event will go to help fund our Care and Repair Program. Today we need to be very creative in how we raise money so we can continue to provide our services free to the older people we support. In 2011 13,000 people asked us for help!

The Afternoon Tea Party will be a celebration of older people who live a good life and add value to our Society but who may find that they need a little support around the house doing odd jobs, making their house secure and light repairs to mention just some types of assistance.

To show you just how important the Care and Repair Program is; here is John’s story, one of the people we helped in January. John is an 87 year old man who was left sitting in the dark because he could not replace his light bulb. He said “when the bulb blew I had no means of putting it back up and I’m waiting to see somebody and I mightn’t know them at all. “Excuse me, would you be so kind as to put up the bulb” … having to ask that I feel very humiliated, it is an awful problem”

John rang our helpline and one of our volunteers called to him, replaced his bulb and completed a few other tasks around the house, even arranged to have a volunteer call to cut his grass. This has made a real difference to John’s life.

The event is supported by Bluebird Care,Without their help we could not hold this event.www.bluebirdcare.ie

Sitting down in the very place he used to work as a teen, Damien Farrelly has taken the time to have a chat with us about his humble beginnings. “I used to work as bar staff here”, he says, looking around at the bustling bar of the Headfort Arms Hotel, “and anytime a DJ couldn’t make a slot, I’d pop my head up and take the reins”.

For those that don’t know, Damien, from Rockfield in Kells, has been a radio DJ on the 2FM Breakfast Show for over a decade, fuelling up workers at the start of the day. “It’s a pretty early start, getting up at 4 in the morning to be ready to go at 6am. But I’d take it any day over night shifts”.

Damien started off his career graduating from Dun Laoghaire Art and Design in 1995 at 22 years of age, with a degree in Radio Broadcasting and Journalism. He managed to get a place on East Coast FM, and then eventually moved onto Dublin’s FM 104 for two years.

“It doesn’t come without its rejections, but when you finally get the phone call you’ve been waiting for, you nearly have a heart attack” he says. Damien got his phone call in 2000, after sending a demo to John Clarke, head of 2FM, when he got the chance to work nights from 11pm to 1am.

“The hours can be a pain sometimes alright, but it’s rewarding of course. Music was the driving point for me. When I think of the transition, it’s definitely humbling”. Unknown to most though, is that Damien himself was actually going to be a chef “I did a bit of catering myself in the day, radio wasn’t my first calling. I went to college in Killybegs with the intention of becoming a chef”.

When he looks back, he agrees that there has been a huge change in radio since he began. “There have been massive changes, between social networking, censoring, and the whole lot. It’s so much easier to get messages across, to talk to people and the listeners. It’s been a great

help for anyone in the business, and a great way to communicate too”.For any aspiring DJ’s or radio presenters out there, Damien’s advice

is “don’t give up and don’t stop trying. It’s hard to get there, but if it’s meant for you, it’ll happen for you”.

You can listen to Damien’s show on RTÉ’s 2FM, on weekdays from 6am to 7am, and Saturdays from 5pm to 7pm.

The Meath Scouts also teamed up for a bed-push in aid of the Oncology Ward in the hospital, raising a further €15,000. All this and €4,000 raised by the Flora Mini Marathon earlier this year will be given to the hospital for the Fix Crumlin Appeal. Catriona McGloin of the Appeal’s Communities Team, “we’ve already got a huge head start thanks to the commitment of everybody involved. We hope to raise up to €8 million by the end of the year”.

Alisha and Tracey say that in light of the success of this year’s Reunion Night, they will be planning on doing in annually – and taking it overseas. “Next year, we hope to do it on a transatlantic level – taking it to New York and hosting a live link between there and here”. Those that are willing to donate to this fantastic cause are asked to visit www.fixcrumlin.ie or visit the appeal’s page on Facebook.

A survey taken of over 1,450 students in Ireland has revealed the truth about drinking. Shocking to some but unsurprising to most, over half of the participants admitted to having consumed alcohol before the age of 15, with an even bigger portion confessing to being drunk before 16.

Amongst other worrying statistics was that of the combination of sex with alcohol, with over 60% admitting to sexual activity with a stranger when under the influence, and 50% of those did not use protection. Immediately question marks are raised when the increase in STI’s in a report by the HSE is taken into account.

John Kennedy, 22, an NUIM alumni student and living in Navan says “There is a huge amount of underage drinking in Navan and Kells, but not more than anywhere else in Ireland really. If you’re underage and you want to drink, it’s rarely difficult as there’s always someone to get it for them if they can’t get served themselves”.

Over 74% of college students were served underage alcohol in off licenses and supermarkets across the country, according to the survey carried out by the Student Marketing Network through www.oxygen.ie. Coleman Byrne, managing director of Student Marketing Network and former two-term president of Union of Students Ireland, said “The survey shows that students are not getting enough information on the effect that binge drinking and unprotected sex has on their long-term health. If more information was readily available, and if students were educated from an earlier age on these effects we could see a dramatic difference in results”

However, John thinks that the problem is simply ignored; “Students are well informed. If anything they’re oversaturated with information on the subject. We were always told not to do so when we were younger, and now we constantly have the opportunity to drink”.

TAyTo PArk was the venue where Ladybirds, Brownies and Guides from Co. Meath enjoyed celebrating the honour of being voted Youth Club of the Year by Co. Meath VEC. The girls aged from aged 5 upwards enjoyed the challenges and thrills of the bungies, Eagle sky adventure zone, sky climbs, mountaineering, water cannon, riding a bucking bronco and panning for treasure to name but a few. Some girls even visited the Tayto factory to learn how their favourite snack is made, while the younger girls enjoyed the magic and puppet show.. One of the highlights was seeing the amazing animals and birds in the park. There was a one day old Donkey to ooh and ahh over too.

No day trip would be the same without a picnic and the weather held off long enough to enjoy some al fresco eating. Some of the girls spent time in the Indian tepees learning all about Native American Indians, how to model balloons and having their faces painted, not with war paint now! One of the Navan Leaders, Anne Hyland said ‘Tayto park was a wonderful choice for a day out for the Girl Guides,

the girls learnt a lot and also had the opportunity to rise to the challenge of the adrenaline rush type of activities like the sky climb, it’s been a wonderful day and it was lovely to bump into and say hello to all the other units from Meath who were also in the park’.

Irish Girl Guides can be enjoyed by young women from the age of 5 upwards and welcomes women from all backgrounds, religions and abilities. Our programme runs from September to June and includes teamwork, getting outdoors and respecting each other and the environment we live in. If you or your daughter/niece/cousin/aunt/mum/nan or friend would like to get involved in Guiding in your area, simply contact Irish Girl Guides National Office on 01 6683898 and they would be happy to advise you of your nearest unit. There are so many products on the market these days, in the magazines they have these excellent write ups claiming to be the ultimate. We at the vitamin-shop don’t heed these articles, we use our own experience with the products, if a product has poor performance we don’t recommend it. So when you buy you know you’re getting the best and most suited to you.

As part of the vitamin-shop group, we are the exclusive supplier of TREC Nutrition products. The brand has won many awards for the quality of its products and is now Poland’s number one brand.

mOnThLY aDviCe COLUmnEvery month we are going to pick a supplement and explain the functions and benefits of taking it. This month is Whey Protein. Whey Protein is a truly amazing supplement, because not only has it been proven to help you build muscle, improve physical performance, sharpen your mind, enhance circulatory system function, but it also has potent anti-aging effects.

Whey Protein has the special building blocks that our bodies need most. Protein is one nutrient we cannot live without, because the body needs it to repair and rebuild, and researchers have been discovering that most people don’t get enough. The scientific research on Whey started during the mid 1900’s, when researchers were experimenting with proteins from plant and animal sources. They discovered that some proteins have all the essential amino acids to support growth and health, while other proteins didn’t. After years of testing they determined that Whey Protein scored the highest in amino acid composition and a high biological value.

To promote our new store we are giving 10% off Trec and Olimp products to every reader. Just bring in the voucher below.

Hi All,Hope your having a nice summer. In this months article I am going to give you a full home programme to try out that doesn’t involve any equipment. So it doesn’t matter that the kids are off you can do it without any babysitters needed.

WARM UP: 5 MINUTES SOME IDEAS: UP AND DOWN YOUR STAIRS, RUN OR FAST WALK AROUND YOUR GARDEN.EXERCISE 1: SQUAT EXERCISE 2: PRESS UPSEXERCISE 3: LUNGES (ALTERNATE LEGS)EXERCISE 4: MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS (ALTERNATE BRINGING KNEE TO CHEST, ABS ENGAGED, CONTROLLED TEMPO.EXERCISE 5: ELEVATED AB CRUNCH

Complete the 5 exercises as one circuit. Spend 45 seconds on each exercise and complete as many reps as possible. Aim for 2-3 rounds for beginnner and 3-4/5 for intermediate to advance. Do not attempt these exercises if you are not familiar with exercising. Enjoy!

Next I want to just explain the importance of eating a breakfast because in my job I listen to “ I don’t feel hungry in the morning.” “ I don’t have time in the morning” etc etc. Well sorry folks, your body needs calories and get out of bed 10 minutes earlier. Here is why!!!!

Skipping breakfast is a common strategy for people who are trying to lose weight, but unfortunately, it’s usually not a successful strategy. Your body (or more likely, your brain) expects to be refueled a few times each day. When you don’t eat breakfast you may feel so hungry by lunch time that you eat more foods than you normally would, which cancels out the calories you cut by skipping breakfast. You may also be tempted to

choose foods that are not the healthiest choices when you feel like you’re starving.

For many people, eating breakfast may is an important part of a weight loss diet. Research studies tell us that people who eat breakfast are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. Some experts believe that breakfast keeps your metabolism running higher because skipping meals causes the body to kick into ‘starvation’ mode. This sounds impressive, but it really isn’t what happens -- it takes three or for days of eating nothing before the body starts gearing down your metabolism. It’s more likely that people who regularly eat breakfast also make good dietary choices the rest of the day.

While any breakfast may be better than no breakfast, there are some foods you might want to avoid because they’re high in added sugars, sodium, saturated fats and calories. Cut back on sugary breakfast cereals (over 5.0 grams per serving), high-calorie pastries, and meats like bacon and sausage that are high in saturated fat and sodium.

Breakfast should include a healthy source of protein and plenty of fiber; the combination will help satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunch time. The protein can come from low-fat meat, low-fat dairy products, or nuts and nut butters. Eggs are also a good source of protein. They’re also high in saturated fats, but one egg only has about 75 calories and they’re quite satiating so it can help keep the hunger pangs away.

So don’t skip your first meal of the day….Please also see all the different activities happening at Mystudio www.mystudio.ie You have so much to choose from and it is all pay as you go, no direct debits or memberships…. Make the changes that will change your life. Thank you Aoife Bradley.

Midfielder Cathal Brady was in scintillating form for Drogheda in their recent away wins against St.Pat’s and Shelbourne. The diminutive winger caused numerous problems for both defences as his pace and skill left experienced defenders like Stephen Paisley for dead. Cathal’s efforts were rewarded as he also scored his first goal for the club in a hard-fought 1-2 win against Shelbourne.

Previously with Kildare County and Longford Town,Cathal has struggled with injury this season but grabbed his chance with both hands when he started his first two games of the season in July. The 25 year old played most of his schoolboy football with Dunboyne FC and is a physio for St.Peter’s Dunboyne senior GAA team, amongst other clubs.Currently living in Ratoath,Cathal is throughly enjoying his time with the Drogs and hopes to continue to play a crucial role in their meteoric rise to second place in the table.

The Drogs held out to win against Pat’s despite Ryan Brennan being sent off in the 50th minute. For a team that many predicted would be fighting relegation, after the half-way point of the season the Drogs have climbed to second place and consolidated that with a last minute winner, from Gavin Brennan, over Shelbourne at Tolka Park. After only one home game in July, this month the Drogs play five home games at Hunky Dory’s Park, first the semi-final of the League Cup against Sligo Rovers on *Mon 6th August, then Bohemians in the League on Fri 10th August,to be followed by Shamrock Rovers on Fri 17th August*, the FAI Cup game against Wexford Youths on 24th August and a league game against Dundalk on 31st August.*These dates are subject to change as Sligo and Shamrock Rovers play European games.

drOGS Midfielder eriC fOleY (eX-CeltiC) ViSitS StaMUlleN fCMeanwhile another Drogheda Utd midfielder was a hugely popular visitor to the Stamullen FC’s soccer camp where he spent an hour demonstrating his skills in front of a huge group of boys and

girls, who were able to display an amazing array of football skills of their own! Eric also spent time answering questions about his three years with Celtic, living with Cillian Sheridan and playing in the youths team when Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon were in charge. However most were interested in his choice of Coco Pops for his cereal in the morning!Coaches Liam Fennel, Dee Gannon and Alan Kirwan have done amazing work to develop this club, which now has its own ground at the City North Hotel. The group enjoyed their third vist to Drogheda Utd to play at half-time of the UCD game with children from 4 to 13 years of age getting the chance to meet the full squad of Drogheda players before the match.

aMBitiOUS dUleeK SiGN rOGerS aNd GraNt Duleek FC have signed two League of Ireland legends to manage their Premier Division team in the MDL for next season. Duleek’s new manager is scouser Dave Rogers, who was an appprentice at Tranmere Rovers, and as part of his work, cleaning John Aldridge’s boots! Dave went on to win three league titles with Shelbourne and also played with Dundee Utd, Dundalk and Drogheda Utd. He spent three years coaching Home Farm’s Academy and last season was player coach with Woodview Celtic, when they won an amzing treble in the MDL Premier Division. Dave’s assistant is Tony “Boots” Grant who lives in nearby Stamullen.Tony (35) signed for Leeds Utd at 16 and enjoyed an amazing career with Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Glenavon, where he scored the winning goal in the Cup final in 1997. “Boots”later won a League Championship and a Setanta Cup medal with Drogheda Utd in 2007. Also in the backroom is coach Robbie Bolton, who brings a wealth of coaching experience to the table.

Rogers is thrilled to be appointed by the ambitious East Meath club and is excited by the challenge for the season ahead “The facililties at the club are magnificent, there is a great infrastructure

in Duleek. It’s always been my ambition to go into management. Our job is ensure that the team are challenging at the top of the table and already in just our second week, the lads are buying into our style of football”.Rogers is a born leader with a great sense of humour and delivers a top class training session on the astro-turf with great emphasis on passing and playing the ball on the deck. The players throughly enjoy the wide variety of drills and were planning on training at Bettystown Beach for the next session!

Duleek first started out in the 1965-1966 seaon originally playing in the Louth League. They also played in the Leinster Senior League and Drogheda Summer Leagues.Noel Heeney and Teddy Sheery have dedicated their lives to the club and are Joint Presidents .Brendan McKeown is another club stalwart and is current club treasurer while Alan McKeown is secretary. The club boast two senior grass pitches and one junior with an excellent astro turf pitch with floodlights. The clubhouse has eight dressing rooms and spacious meeting rooms upstairs and is a fine example to other clubs in the area.

Last season the club advanced all the way to the Leinster Junior Cup final which was a magnificent achievement in itself but due to this and other cup runs, the team ended up having to play three league games a week at the end of the season, which with injuries, suspensions etc put paid to any title hopes. It was Noel Heeney who first introduced Rogers to the committee and explains “I had known Dave when he was playing with Drogheda Utd last year and when he told me about his hopes of managing, I passed his name on to the committee when the position became available”

Chairman Pat O’ Brien elaborates “ Our ambition this year is to win the Premier Division title. It’s been a long time since a Meath team has won the title as it’s been dominated by Louth clubs over the years. We’re not just here to make up the numbers!”
