* archipelago composedof 7,641 islands with a coastline of 36,289 kms long;

* population is 100.98 million; covering 17 regions & 81 provinces;

* a total of 832 municipalities, 57 cities and 64 provincesare considered coastal



The Philippines is:

* home to 25,000 kms of coral

reefs, seagrass & seabeds and

248,813 hectares of mangroves;

* is endowed with many beaches

and coastlines of value to

tourism and development;

;



The Philippines has:

* employed 488 thousand seabase

workers & supplied 28 percent of

the seafarers in the world;

Seabased workers generated an income

of 9.83 B US$ (2018)

Challenges



1. The present compilation of ocean

accounts did not consider the SEEA

and is mainly anchored on the SNA;

Ocean ecosystem, ocean assets,

etc.are not yet captured

2. The identification of industries are not yet

fully captured since these industries are

developed based on economic activities;

It is helpful to have a separate classification

system of ocean accounts; this also applies

to have a common framework and concepts

of ocean and its related variables;

3. Data on ocean are not yet institutionalized;

The need to make a review of existing data

collection system to ensure that data support

to measure ocean economy are put in place;

4. The need to popularize the uses and

applications of ocean economy particularly to

key stakeholders who are main users of the

ocean accounts.
