Introduction

Interesting physics:

more complex description of the processes of the environment.

Our proposal: complexity should be build in the teaching program.

Complexity: formulated in various ways.

Should be introduced to education from simple descriptions of processes through the gradually increasing superposition of the known processes as components of the complex description.

Two disciplinary sources

Two disciplines with

essential complexity:

Environmental science

Space science.

We learn from them.

First step:

form groups of the

processes they apply.

Page 4: Measuring environmental physics and chemistry by ...parrise.elte.hu/tpi-15/slides/Berczi_Szaniszlo.pdf · Planetary Surface rocks: Husar-9 Identifications of the rock types by their

Grouping of the processes

Both environmental and

space science propose

groupings:

processes run parallel.

Environmental science:

processes are streams.

In Space probe:

processes are measuring

technologies.

Rooks on the chesstable Two requests are unified.

The form of it: a relation table.

Relation table = a chesstable with rooks for each column and row.

Two sets of rooks form two subsystem corresponding to the two cardinal actors of the environmental studies

natural streams and

technologies

Page 6: Measuring environmental physics and chemistry by ...parrise.elte.hu/tpi-15/slides/Berczi_Szaniszlo.pdf · Planetary Surface rocks: Husar-9 Identifications of the rock types by their

Processes for a town

Consider a town:

Natural streams to be defendedare: air, water, ground, heat, etc.streams.

Technologies which may destroyenvironmental streams: theproducing and various othertechnologies of the town.

They form a woven system,

Columns correspond to thenatural streams,

Rows correspond to technologies.

Processes for a space probe

Replace town by spaceprobe to be landing onthe Moon.

Task is the same, but

One great difference.

Producing technologiesare replaced bymeasuring technologies

Plus space probe is aminiaturized instrumentcomplex.

Surveyor - Hunveyor In the matrix arrangement

the operations of the procedure of technologies are groupped into one box of the matrix, where technology row crosses the column of natural water stream.

All boxes are measurements.

Measurement is an interaction between a natural stream and a measuring technology.

Identifications of the rock types by their textures.

Measuring magnetic dust transported in the winds (Mars)

In the carpet magnetic cubes are hidden.

Transported dust grains are adhered by magnets and the position of the magnetic cubes becomes visible.

pH measuring

experiment Two arms and a pump on the

rover both from LEGO elements.

On the first arm is thewireless camera (it can rotate around 360°)

Second arm: to stretch and place the indicator ribbon to the surface and move it along a distance to contact with the wet soil.

The role of the pump was to pour water on the soil surface.

Front: ultrasonic sensor

(obstacles)

Upper arm).

A camera (right up)

Arm moves indicator ribbon

(rolled). Arm is contacting

the wet surface soil.

Camera observes changes

of indicator ribbon colour.

Optical-Chemistry Experiment

The main tasks:

Move and fix the lens so that the plane of the lens should be perpendicular to the axis of the incident solar light.

Also task to focus of the lens so that the ray should reach the soil exactly. (operated at any incidence position).

We used to this task 3 motors. 2 motors moves the lens around horizontal axes, and the third one around a vertical one.

Husar-5 instruments built from LEGO elements

Motors and controlls by the NXT “brain” driven by LEGO Mindstorms system.

LEGO set contains a light-sensor, but too heavy for theexperiment

We used a light one photoresistor, and its signal was introduced into the NXT.

Movement: One motor moves the

arm along an arc from the

horizontal about 40-45°-degrees up

and down.

The lens can be rotated around its

symmetry axis. Basic position right

on figure, ( 0° angle) than the

computer program moves it from -

90° to +90° position.

Summary

Summary:

Complexitiy should give a more realistic overview of the processes around us.

Complexity is a source of both joy and innovative teaching of physics.

Complexity of a space probe and its construction should give new form of teaching physics: measurements, processes, technologies, informatics.
