Data from creep testir~ forever with x-ray and Fischer assay analyses were used to demonstrate correlation be~wecn various stress levels ard organic contents for samples of Wyoming Green River Formation.

792061 MEASUREMENT OF SOIL THERMAL RESISTIVITY Mitchell, J K; Kao, T C J Geotech E~gng Div ASCE, Vl04, N~TIO 1 Oct

1978, P1307-1320

Of several available methods for the measure- sent of the thermal resistivity of soils, the thermal needle method amd the Shammon and Wells method are considered most suitable I because of their relative simplicity and the short mea- suroment time required. The thermal needle me- thod is the simpler of the two I and it offers the added advantage that knowledge of the spec- ific heat of the soil is not required for cal- culation of the thermal resistivity from the test data. A special thermal needle design and simple teat ~ocedures have been developed which make possible the determination of ther- mal resistivity in both the radial and axial directions and the specific heat for a given sample. 792062 EAF~IMENTAL STUDIES ON THE ~ CONDUL~IVITY OF SOIL

Matsmnoto, J; Okubo I T Tee_hnol Rep Tohoku Univ Jpn, V43, NI, 1978,

P151-172

The t h e r m a l conductivity of sand, loam ard sandy loam is measured by t h e transient s t a t e method. It is shown that the thermal conducti- vity of soil increases with the water content and the dry density, and that t he effect of water content is mo~e significant. A logistic equation permits the estimation of the thermal conductivity from t h e de~ee of saturation. The higher t h e water content, t h e g r e a ~ - r t h e effect of temperature. Two semi-e~perimental models are proposed and the mechanism of the heat conduction of soil is discussed.

Stataline, Nevada, i-3 May 1978, VI, P210- 214. Publ Reno: University of Nevada I 1978

Factors influencimg thermophYsieal properties of rocks are discussed I available data is analysed stud same recommended values for thermal conductivity of granites, quartzite ar~ sand- stone are given.

792064 IMPROVEMENTS IN THE LUGEON OR PACKER ~ I - L~ ~ST

Pearsor~ R; Moneyj M S Q J Emgmg Geol I Vl0, N3, 19771 I>221-239

Reports a progr~-m~ of repeated tests in shallow drill holes in sandstones and greywackes task- ing use of constant head tanks with continuous monltcrimg of flow rate and pressure m~asure- sent. These techniques make it possible to dis- timgulah between test system faults (e.g. packer le~kRge) and non-equilibrimn effects due %o the hydraulic properties of the rock mass. Results o b t a i r ~ d a r e shown t o depe r~ on t h e d u r a t i o n of 'the test and on the sequence in which diffe- rent test pressures are applied. The relation- ship between equilibrium flows and pressures appears to be non-linear in both rock types.

792065 NOTE ON HVORSLEV'S INTAKE FACTORS. TECHNICAL NOTE Lowther I G Geotechniquej V28, ~I 1978, P465-466

Hvcrslev's intake factors (1949) are used exten- sively for the determination of permeability from the results of tests in boreholes emd pie- zometers. Intake factors are not identical when condition G(well point-filter in uniform soil) approaches condition C(flush bottom in uniform soil) I or when condition F (well poir~-filter at impervious bourdary) approaches condition B(flush bottom at impervious botmdary). It should now be possible to derive more satis- factory intake factors.
