Principal’s Newsletter October 2018
Welcome back from our fall break. It was great to see smiling faces this week. Teachers are
ready for their students and will continue where they left off prior to our break. Please make
sure to continue communication with your child’s teacher. Conferences will be coming up in
November.
FALL FESTIVAL
Our Harvest Carnival will be held October 10/31. This is a day where our student can
participate in our Fall Carnival and costume parade. A TK/K 11:20-12:30 on the upper yard and
1st-5th 11:10-12:20. The Thursday folder has a flyer with more information. Harvest and

CAASPP RESULTS
The CA Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is an online assessment for
3rd-5th grade students and taken each spring. The detailed results are available on the CA
Department of Education (CDE) website at: CAASPP Results . I will be sending more
information about our CAASPP scores later this year.

LIFE SKILLS OF EMPATHY AND KINDNESS
This month our students are learning about Kindness and Empathy. Classrooms will be reading:
Chocolate Milk, Por Favor and All Kinds of Friends, Even Green). Students will also participate in
an assembly by Soul Shoppe: “You Belong Here” on 10/26.
MEASURE V
The San Mateo-Foster City School District Measure V— Excellence in Education Measure will
attract and retain teachers, support innovative programming, enhance core academics, protect
art and music education, and strengthen science, technology, engineering and math programs
to prepare students for high school, college and careers. This measure will be on the November
Ballot.
TEACHER DEVELOPMENT DAY
On the morning of 10/5, classroom teachers met to discuss learning targets for this school year.
Each teacher set reading targets for their students. These targets will be revisited throughout
the school year. During the afternoon, TK-2 grade teachers reviewed reading assessments while
our 3rd-5th grade teachers collaborated on planning lessons to target vocabulary and making
meaning of text that students are reading.
GRADE LEVEL DATA MEETINGS
In November, I will be meeting with grade level teams and our reading specialist to review our
first trimester literacy data. These meetings are professional learning opportunities to focus on
teaching and learning.
SUPERINTENDENT’S COFFEE CHAT
Tuesday, October 23, 2018, 9:00 am - 10:00 am at Bayside Academy, and Tuesday, January 29,
2019, 6:30-7:30 pm at Abbott Middle School, Spanish translation provided at both meetings.
DIGITAL TAT2
Thanks to our PTA our 5th grade students will participate in a workshop from a company called
Digital TAT2. During this workshop, they will learn: Personal Responsibility in the Digital Age
as students leave elementary school and prepare for middle school, this workshop focuses on
guiding kids to take personal responsibility for their digital reputation and the reputation of
others. Using guided discussion, videos, and real life scenarios, this workshop explores the
growing challenges that students face as their world widens and adult supervision decreases.
HANDBOOK
Our handbook will be sent in an email and available on our school website. You will find useful
information about our school in this handbook. Please notify the office if you would like a hard
copy of the handbook.

Bienvenidos de nuevo de nuestras vacaciones de otoño. Fue genial ver caras sonrientes esta

FESTIVAL DE OTOÑO
Nuestro carnaval de cosecha se llevará a cabo el 31 de octubre. Este es un día donde nuestros
estudiante puede participar en nuestro Carnaval de otoño y desfile de disfraces. A TK / K 11:

RESULTADOS CAASPP
La Evaluación de Desempeño y Progreso del Estudiante de CA (CAASPP) es una evaluación en
línea para estudiantes de 3º a 5º grado que se realiza cada primavera. Los resultados detallados

DIA DEL DESARROLLO DEL MAESTRO
En la mañana del 10/5, los maestros del aula se reunieron para discutir los objetivos de
aprendizaje para este año escolar. Cada maestro establece objetivos de lectura para sus
estudiantes. Estos objetivos serán revisados a lo largo del año escolar. Durante la tarde, los
maestros de los grados TK-2 revisaron las evaluaciones de lectura, mientras que nuestros
maestros de 3º a 5º colaboraron en la planificación de lecciones para identificar el vocabulario y
dar significado al texto que los alumnos están leyendo.
REUNIONES DE DATOS DE NIVEL DE GRADO
En noviembre, me reuniré con los equipos de nivel de grado y nuestro especialista de lectura

TAT2 DIGITAL
Gracias a nuestro PTA, nuestros estudiantes de quinto grado participarán en un taller de una
empresa llamada Digital TAT2. Durante este taller, aprenderán: Responsabilidad personal en la
era digital.
a medida que los alumnos abandonan la escuela primaria y se preparan para la secundaria, este

Abbott Middle School Parent Tours
Abbott Middle School will be hosting parent tours designed for parents who live within the Abbott attendance area, but who may be considering a variety of middle school options. Tour slots will be reserved on a first-come basis, and there are a limited number of spots available. If you already know that your student plans to attend Abbott next year, please plan to join us for an orientation and open house for all incoming students and their families on May 23, 2019 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. We will also do orientation for all incoming Abbott 6th graders on the week before school starts.
