Independence Day – Restoring True Freedom: Happy July 4th weekend to you and your families! The fourth of July has always been a time to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as a nation and remember that our Independence was won at great cost. However, at this moment in history our nation is suffering from not only the pandemic but also the

ill effects of racism and police brutality. Peaceful protests and movements to heal memories and correct racial injustices have been hijacked by violence, looting and acts of vandalism. Several weeks ago, violent protestors tore down a statue of Saint Junipero Serra in San Francisco because they believed the saint had committed acts of violence against Native Americans. This is a lie. Serra was a 18th century Catholic priest who founded nine of California’s 21 Spanish missions and is credited with bringing Catholicism to the western US. Junipero in fact made heroic sacrifices to protect Native American peoples from the Spanish military who were abusing the Indians.

Without denying that historical wrongs have occurred, and racial injustice needs to be repaired, turning to violence and attempting to rewrite history is not the answer. Righteous anger against injustice must always be tempered by a deep love of all our brothers and sisters made in the image and likeness of God. Social inequalities and racism are just the tip of the iceberg. Senseless violence, police brutality, and racism are but symptoms of a deeper injustice and evil rooted in the Abortion industry. So long as we allow the systematic destruction of vulnerable human life in the womb, we cannot hope to heal the racism and brutality committed against all others in society. Unjust discrimination begins in the womb with those who do not have a voice and ends with the social and racial inequalities we see in our society today. Join with me in praying for an end to violence and racism at all levels. Freedom isn’t free…our nation was founded at great cost and only at great cost will we be healed. Jesus Christ, heal our wounds by your precious blood!

Fr. Suso away visiting his parents: My brother Michael and I drove to Massachusetts to visit our parents over the July 4th week. We have not seen them in person since before Christmas because of the pandemic. Safe travels to everyone who may be visiting family over the holiday weekend.

Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK Please keep in your prayers Donald Karban and all the members of our parish who are ill. If you would like your loved one’s or friend’s name on the please pray for list, please call the rectory office at (216) 524-1987. Please

be sure that the person who is ill consents to have their name placed on the list.

REST IN PEACEMay all our deceased parishioners live forever in the joy of the Resurrection…

FATHER JAMIE’S HEALING HUMOR A little boy was lying in front on the fireplace, scribbling on a piece of paper. Suddenly he rushed into the kitchen with the paper and said, “Look, Mom, I learned to write!” “Well, what does it say?” his mother asked. “I don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t learned to read yet.” (from OVERHEARD AT THE COUNTRY CAFÉ, 1998) Even though it may take little children some time to learn to read and write, Jesus tells us that he has revealed the secrets of his kingdom to them. Children know that everything in life comes from their parents. They trust that their parents will give them not only what they need, but also what they want. Jesus wants all of us, as God’s children, to come to him and he will ease our burdens and lighten our loads. All we need is the heart of a child who trusts.

WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Let us pray together a passage from the Gospel of Matthew. In these troubling times, let us take great comfort in the promise that God will provide us with rest if we turn to Him “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

REVERENT RECEPTION OF THE EUCHARIST

As we celebrate Corpus Christi Sunday, our attention is called to the Precious Body and Blood of Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. This is a good time to take stock of how well and reverently we receive Christ, who is truly present in the Eucharist. Are we aware of mortal sin on our souls? All mortal sin must be confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before we receive the Eucharist, lest we incur further sin for receiving unworthily (1 Corinthians 11:29). Do we participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly or are we in a pattern of receiving the Eucharist while rarely receiving sacramental absolution? Our participation in the Eucharist presumes our participation in Reconciliation.

When it comes to the way in which we physically receive the Host: in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, which is what we celebrate at St. Columbkille, we are permitted to receive either on the tongue or in the hand. Each form of reception is to be done properly. In both cases, after the minister says, “The Body of Christ,” we acknowledge this reality by responding “Amen” and giving a slight bow of the head. Then, if receiving on the tongue, the head is tilted slightly back and the tongue extended. If receiving in the hand, form a “throne” for Christ, according to St. Cyril of Jerusalem, by cupping one hand under the other. Allow the minister to place the Host flat in the palm of your hand—do not grasp for it. When receiving in the hand, please place the Host in your mouth while standing before the minister. The minister must watch to ensure that the host is received to protect against potential desecration. It is not appropriate to walk back to your pew with the Host! Then, after consuming the Host, check for particles on your hand and fingers—these are still the Eucharist—and consume any remaining elements of the Host.

During the COVID pandemic, when approaching the communion minister, you are to pull your mask below the chin, present one hand resting on the palm of the other and after responding “Amen”, the communicant reverently places the Eucharist in the mouth and immediately replaces their mask.

A blessed Corpus Christi Sunday to everyone! May Jesus in the Eucharist bless you abundantly and draw you ever deeper into the Father’s divine life. See you in the Eucharist! PRAYER REQUEST LINES

ALL SAINTS CEMETERYPRE-PLANNING SEMINAR

The Catholic Cemeteries Association invites you to attend a 1-hour pre-planning seminar on Saturday, July 18, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. Learn about your Catholic burial options, including options for cremated remains. We kindly ask that you RSVP to this event so that we can make arrangements for proper social distancing. Attendees are encouraged to wear a face-covering but are not required. All Saints Cemetery, 480 W. Highland Rd., Northfield Ctr. For more information or to RSVP, please call (216) 641-7575, ext. 5.

FINANCIAL NEWS AND NOTES

• Since we are unable to attend Mass, you can always drop off your weekly offertory envelope at the Parish Office or you can put it in another envelope and mail it.

• When writing checks to the parish please write out the entire year 2020 in the date in order to avoid any potential fraud. By writing out the date as 1/1/20 (January 1, 2020), the year can be fraudulently changed to 2021, or any other date in this century. Instead, make sure when you’re dating documents in 2020 that you write the year out in full.

• Please refrain from sending us one single check

attached to multiple unmarked envelopes. The parish has no way of knowing how much money is being designated for each unmarked envelope therefore they must be returned. Please carefully mark your envelopes with the proper dollar amount so you can receive credit for your donation.

• Tuition assistance envelopes are processed separately from weekly offertory. Therefore, please write a separate check when contributing to tuition assistance. Catholic Charities envelopes are processed by the diocese so please write a separate check when contributing to Catholic Charities.

WEEKLY OFFERTORY

Due to early bulletin deadlines because of the holiday, the financial data for our collections is not available this week.

Thank You for your continued generosity to our parish!

RED CROSS NEWS! On June 15, the American Red Cross began testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The antibody test is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. The Red Cross hopes testing for COVID-19 antibodies will provide our valued donors insight into whether they may have been exposed to this coronavirus. We recognize that individuals and public health organizations desire more information about COVID-19, and as an organization dedicated to helping others, the Red Cross is fortunate to be able to help during this pandemic.

MALACHI CENTER’SANNUAL SUMMER CAMP

This six-week program, which began on June 29th, allows 30 children, entering first grade to eighth grade, to come to Malachi Center to learn and have fun in a safe environment. The camp’s literacy and skill-building programs help to ensure that each child returns to school in the Fall ready to succeed. This year’s camp may look a little different than it has in the past, but it will still be fun-filled. Campers will enjoy the themed weeks, enrichment activities, sports, arts and crafts, and field trips! We are adhering to Stay Safe Ohio guidelines for day camp using masks, frequent hand-washing and hand sanitizer, sanitizing surfaces, and practicing social distancing. To make the Malachi Center Summer Camp a success, we need your help, and hope you will consider sponsoring a camper:$20.00 provides one day of camp for one child.$80.00 provides one week of camp for one child.$480.00 provides six weeks of camp for one child. To learn more about how you can sponsor a camper, contact Deby Auerbach-Brown at (216) 771-3036 or at [email protected] Camp Physical Donations Needed:

o Sanitizing wipes and cleaning supplies.o We’re looking for healthy snacks in large

quantities as well.o We need 36 containers to hold individual supplies

for children in Summer Camp. The activity boxes are what we are using so everyone has their own individualized supplies.

o Individual Supplies (small size so they’ll fit in the box):

• Bubbles, sidewalk chalk, Playdough, Fidget spinners, yoyos, watercolor pencils, etc.

o We also need water bottles for the children and jugs of water – we will be using both (one for field trips one for here since we don’t have access to our water fountain.)

o Yard games – Frisbees, Scoop ball sets, rubber horseshoe games, rubber bowling games, etc.)

The older children will be earning service hours in their new roll of Junior Counselor (JC). They will earn gift cards per number of hours they have service. We are collecting donations of Gift Cards – places that are close to Malachi Center, i.e., McDonald’s, Mitchell’s Ice Cream, Happy’s Pizza, Wendy’s, etc. Thank you! With your continued support of Malachi Center, we’re able to continue to provide life-changing services for children attending our annual Summer Camp.
