SPRING EDITION 2016

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;

And give us not to think so far away

As the uncertain harvest; keep us here

All simply in the springing of the year. – Robert Frost (excerpt from A Spring Prayer.)

It is in the spirit of this poem that I hope to find you all looking forward to brighter days

ahead. Let us all find solace in knowing that winter is behind us and the flowers of spring will

soon be in bloom. It is my pleasure to serve you in my capacity as manager of the Nyack

Senior Activity Center and my door is always open.

Sincerely,

Monique Anderson

Manager

Hello Everyone!

I am the new Program Coordinator for the

Nyack Senior Activity Center. This past Fall, I

was a volunteer at the Ramapo Center. I

worked for Verizon in New Jersey for over 30

years. I’ve lived in Rockland County for over 32

years.

The Nyack Senior Activity Center is a wonderful

place to be! The members and staff have been

very welcoming.

We look forward to going on exciting trips,

having interesting speakers and of course

exercise and nutrition!

Its been an exciting winter…

We went to a new thrift shop called Bloomingdeals in Blauvelt. Our members

found some treasures including shoes, sweaters and home decorations.

There was a wonderful Wellness Forum put on by a group of nursing students

from Dominican College. They covered so many topics in a very interactive way.

Spring head wreaths were made with our members courtesy of Burt Hughes.

Therapeutic Drum Circles were amazing! Joseph was leading some songs with

his headset and speaker.

Hearts made of ribbons and dreams were made with Michelle from Creative

Arts. This fabulous artwork is hanging in our windows.

Sharon Aperto from Nyack Library has done wonderful book discussions with

us including “Poor Little Rich Town” by Kurt Vonnegut which reminded us a lot

of our Village of Nyack. “The Lady and The Tiger” by Francis Richard Stockton

had members figuring out what the ending really meant.

Puff Pastry Strawberry Tart

Notes While this recipe technically serves four, it disappeared really quickly, so I would suggest making two for any kind of party.

Ingredients Butter for greasing the pan 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 1/2 cups of strawberries, sliced 1/2 teaspoon plus 1 teaspoon granulated sugar, divided 1 cup whipping cream 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Powdered sugar, for garnish

Yield

[1]

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

2. Place your puff pastry on a baking sheet that has been greased with butter.

3. Neatly arrange strawberries over puff pastry, leaving 1/2 inch of crust around the edges. Dust with 1/2 teaspoon of granulated

sugar.

4. Bake the tart for about 15 or 20 minutes, or until the crust begins to turn golden brown and the juices from the strawberries

begin to seep out.

5. While the tart is baking, in the bowl of a stand mixer (or just a large bowl if you're using a hand mixer), add whipping cream,

Helpful Spring Cleaning Tips Consider purchasing a small hand-held vacuum cleaner. They are light-er and easier to move from room to room. These light weight appliances eliminate the risk of tripping over electrical chords too!

Use small step stools. Avoid wobbly chairs or tall ladders for dusting or changing lightbulbs. Instead, use a small step stool. If you still can’t reach, call a neighbor over for help.

The spring season produces rain. Make sure to avoid slippery surfaces when cleaning. Make sure to clean on warm, sunny days and wear non-slip shoes!

Use furniture sliders to move that heavy couch! Instead of hurting your back moving furniture, use furniture sliders to make the work much easier! They are inexpensive and make moving things across most surfac-es a breeze. Towels work on hard wood or laminate floors!

Use a carryall apron! Instead of bending over to grab whatever you need, carry the items you will use in your carryall apron.

Use a lint roller to clean lampshades or anything dusty. They are small-er and lighter than a traditional duster and inexpensive.

With these spring cleaning tips for seniors, we hope that you will be armed with great information that prepares you to get your home clean! Of course, before enlisting in any physical activities, be sure to consult your doctor. Your safety is just as important as your health. Even if don’t have any help available, it would be ideal to have someone around just in case a situation arises. Remember, the point in spring cleaning is to cleanse your home, in turn promoting a healthy living environment. Be safe and be healthy!

New Beginnings

by Gertrude B. McClain

It's only the beginning now

...a pathway yet unknown

At times the sound of other steps

...sometimes we walk alone

The best beginnings of our lives

May sometimes end in sorrow

But even on our darkest days

The sun will shine tomorrow.

So we must do our very best

Whatever life may bring

And look beyond the winter chill

To smell the breath of spring.

Into each life will always come

A time to start anew

A new beginning for each heart

As fresh as morning dew.

Although the cares of life are great

And hands are bowed so low

The storms of life will leave behind

The wonder of a rainbow.

The years will never take away

Our chance to start anew

It’s only the beginning now

So dreams can still come true.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
