Our Pastor’s Message… June, 2016

Dear Friends,

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy

Spirit be with you all.” (2nd Corinthians 13.14)

I have exciting news to share! Our church has a new mission statement. Various groups and teams have been working this towards perfection and we believe we have reached it. The new statement is:

We are a worshiping community, building disciples of Jesus Christ by Connecting, Growing, and Sharing.

The leadership of Middletown United Methodist Church strongly believes that this statement points to who we are and where we want to go. It is my personal hope and dream that this statement will be used by all of us to describe who and what our church is. Imagine yourself in the grocery store and the opportunity comes up to share and explain about YOUR church. You can easily say that we are a worshiping community, building disciples of Jesus Christ by connecting, growing and sharing.

Mission statements are very important for churches. They give us direction. They help us make decisions. This statement is filled with some very powerful, purposely chosen words: worship, build, connect, grow, and share. These five action words will be used to define us and the whole statement will be used as a filter for all that we do and decide to start new. I look forward to living into this statement with you. I look forward to our church helping disciples to connect, grow, and share more with each other and God.

I look forward to talking with you pertaining to this new mission statement soon.

Peace and God’s blessings. In Christ,

Rev. Derrick L. Doherty, Pastor Middletown United Methodist Church

PS - Sunday, June 5th, Rev. Beth Caulfield will be with us during worship and will be leading a small group organization and leadership training starting at 12 noon. If you are interested please email Tricia Gilbert so that we have enough lunch for everyone.

Pastor Renewal Leave

The Staff Parish Relations Committee wishes to inform the MUMC congregation that Pastor Derrick will be on Renewal Leave from June 15-July 15, 2016. Our denomination allows each Pastor to take a month’s leave from his or her normal responsibilities every four years for purposes of reflection, study and self-renewal. During this time of renewal Derrick will be focusing on a variety of activities including an extensive reading list, exploring possible locations to pursue a Doctorate Degree, visiting with Pastors from other churches to obtain insight into ways to enhance our small group and children’s ministries and several family activities.

This leave has been approved by the SPRC, Church Council, the Bishop, and the District Superintendents of the Greater New Jersey Conference. The Reverend Jim Davis will be coverage for Sunday services as well as visitation and other pastoral responsibilities on an as needed basis during Pastor Derrick’s leave. Reverend Davis is personal friend and mentor of Pastor Derrick. We will be blessed to have Reverend Davis with us for four weeks as Pastor Derrick will be blessed during his renewal leave. We wish Pastor Derrick a peaceful and rejuvenating walk with the Lord during this time.

MDO’s Name Has Changed!

MDO Preschool is changing it’s name! In order to more accurately reflect the focus and function of our preschool, we will now be known as “LEARNING PATH PRESCHOOL.” Thank you to everyone who submitted ideas for the new name. We will be making this transition along with our new logo.

Our Annual Mother's Day Tea was a sweet success. The children worked hard on the hats and sea shell pins they made for their mothers.

As part of our Earth Day celebration on April 22nd, we collected sticks, leaves, and other natural as well as recycled items and made a banner. Please take a look. It is hanging in the hallway outside our classroom. We also used a special chart to track our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle in our classroom all week.

They sang "I'm A Little Teapot" and served tea, cake, and fruit to their Moms. What a great day!

FAVORITE HYMNS & PRAISE SONGS

In the April issue of the Meadowlark, the “Did You Know” article asked readers for the names of their favorite hymns and /or praise songs. The congregation has voted and the following are the results. The low number of repeats certainly shows a diversity of taste. They are all an inspiring addition to the worship service.

Dear Church Family, I want to express my sincerest thanks to everyone for their outpouring of love, get well wishes, cards, and most of all the prayers both during and following my surgery. The love and support I received made for a successful recovery.

Thank you again- Jeanne

Did You Know …???

After 33 years, our preschool is changing its name from Mother’s Day Out to Learning Path Preschool. Its history began in 1980 when Mrs. Joanne Golebiowski suggested to Pastor Dick Wilson that the church sponsor a child care program to be used by both members of the church and the community. MDO was set up as a service to provide an opportunity ". . . for mother to shop, lunch with her husband or friends, etc., while her children are cared for by capable women in a friendly, cheerful atmosphere at the church."

Pastor Wilson approved of the idea since there were many young families without nearby family to provide help. Mothers needed a safe and inexpensive place to leave their children while “they ran errands or went to the doctor. Or to just simply have a little respite time.” In 1983 the United Methodist Women, in cooperation with the Administrative Board, sponsored the Mother’s Day Out program at MUMC.

The first Board of Directors for MDO included: Pastor Dick Wilson Director Joanne Golebiowski Pres. of the UMW Lynn Miller Beth Duncan Linda Patterson

MDO was open from 9 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. The cost was $5.00 for one child and $2.50 for each additional child!! The program was originally set up so mothers could either” drop off as needed or a reservation could be made in advance to be sure there was room. MDO began in one room, and Joanne Golebiowski was the director. Child care was offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Karen Bonnell served as the next director from 1984 to Jan. of 1985, and by this time there were two rooms being used for the program. The third director was Nancy Wagner, who served from Jan. of 85 until June of 1986. MDO expanded into three classrooms under Director Betsy Peyton from Sept. 1986 to Aug.

1995. Now pre-registration was required. The fire alarm system was installed in the building and doors were added to all classrooms when the second building addition was completed.

Director Peggy Littlewood continued with three classrooms from Sept. 1995 to July 1999. The playground was fenced in and pre-registration with a monthly fee was now required. The policy of “pay only if you came” was no longer available. Under Director Sandy Elzer, who served from Sept. 1999 to June 2015, Mother’s Day Out expanded

again, this time to five rooms. When Sandy announced her intentions to retire, the newly activated board held interviews. All the past directors were highly qualified and did an admiral job for small compensation. Each had brought her own special innovative ideas and improvements to the school and now MDO was a certified preschool.

The preschool had a great deal of competition from the public schools which were sponsoring pre-K programs, and from other religious institutions which were also offering

preschool programs. Times and demands were changing and so had the school. Our new director, Liz Hill, was chosen to meet those needs. Liz is a certified teacher, has a BS in Business Administration and had been at MDO for 7 years. While the basic hours are still the same,

pre and after care is now available from 8 A.M. until 9:30 A.M. and 2:30 to 4 P.M. Today parents can select from a flexible program of 2, 3 or 5 days per week.

The staff of ten work diligently, not only with the children, but with parents, the board and each other to strengthen the relationship between MUMC and the school by cross-sharing events and ministries. They have found and implemented ways to achieve name recognition by using social media such as www.hulafrog.com, and local newspapers and magazines. They put out a newsletter and have their own website, which is linked to this publication. They will be using the app Remind to stay in touch with parents just as the public schools do.

Presenting our school’s new logo!

The school’s mission states that their goal is “to guide the children in the joy and discovery of learning through the development of self-confidence, learn through play, and academic exploration.” A typical day includes individual problem solving, as well as peer learning in the alphabet, math, science, name recognition, writing, weather, calendar music/movement, and circle/story time. Everything is done to help the children develop a love of learning and refine their social skills to prepare them for their next step. The new name reflects these changes. We are a "Learning Path Preschool," a friendly and loving road where the staff is “Nurturing the Whole Child.”

SS Sandy Rebuild Teams Coming!

Good news! We will be hosting two Super Storm Sandy rebuild teams next month. One will be the week of June 12 (10pp including some youth) and the 2nd will be the week after that, June 19th (a team of 7). Volunteer hosting opportunities are now available for Sunday Welcome meals (pizza is fine) and Thursday Thank You meals during those 2 weeks. We will also need helpers with room setup and breakdown on Sunday the 12th and Sunday the 19th. If anyone can help with any of these tasks, or if you would like to be even more involved with the team as the main point of contact to the team leader (very rewarding), please call or email Joyce Johnson.

Small Groups Workshop Sunday, June 5, 2015 - 12:00 Noon

On Sunday, June 5, 2016, Rev. Beth Caulfield will be with us during worship. Rev. Caulfield works for the Conference and has been helping churches engage in small groups.

After worship service at 12pm noon, lunch will be served, followed by Rev. Caulfield leading a small groups organization and leadership training session at 12:30pm.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Tricia Gilbert at 908.347.2985 or email her at [email protected] so that we can be assured of having enough lunch.

Volunteers Needed for ASLAN Summer Camps

ASLAN Youth Ministries is in need of volunteers to serve as counselors and teachers in their summer camps this year. They are looking for local church youth groups to serve as a team in each location or for individual youth or adults to volunteer. The dates for the three locations are:

Neptune, Community Bible Church, weeks of

July 11th and 18th; Long Branch, Long Branch Covenant Church,

weeks of July 25th and August 1st; Red Bank, Pilgrim Baptist Church, weeks of

August 8th and 15th.

Hours are 10 am -2 pm. A typical day may include academics, sports, swimming, music, arts and crafts, etc. This is a great opportunity for mature young adults to not only provide an important community service, but to also learn the basics of working with children while having a blast and earning community service hours.

This is also an opportunity for folks to share a skill or passion with the kids. In years past, they have had volunteers teach science, yoga, and praise dancing just to name a few. Ideas and suggestions are welcome. If you are interested please contact Janis Marler at 732-741-7824 or email [email protected].

Church Family Picnic Sunday, June 12, 2016 - 11:30(ish)

The church family picnic is planned for Sunday, June 12th. There will be one service on that Sunday at 10 a.m. and the picnic will be held immediately following. There is a sign up sheet in the narthex for you to let us know that your family will be attending and what you might be bringing. There is also an opportunity to help with the set up and the cleanup. Hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken will be provided as well as drinks and dessert. It will be a wonderful day full of fun and fellowship. Hope to see you there!

Graduates!!!

If you have a family member who is graduating this year, please note their name, school from which they are graduating on the fellowship pad. Let us know if they are continuing his or her education, enlisting in the military or embarking on a particular career. We would like to recognize them during a service on June 26th. You may also email the information to Jeanne at: [email protected].

In Our Church Community…

Walking the streets and seeing the sites where Jesus, Himself, walked, fished, ate helps turn the Scriptures from a 'black-n-white' TV set to a HD TV set. Pastor Derrick and your friends at Middletown UMC invite you to join them on a 10 day Pilgrimage to the Holy Lands starting January 31, 2017. For more information, please talk to Pastor Derrick, pick up a

brochure (there are many around the building), or visit the following website: http://www.eo.travelwithus.com/tours/hl17-47145-013117x#eotours. This promises to be a life changing, faith formative experience!

May 25, 2016

Dear Church Family, Spirit blessings and empowerment to you and your family this Pentecost season. Fifty-one days ago, as leaders of the church we shared a special appeal pertaining to extraordinary heating

repairs that had to be completed in the 2015/2016 heating season. Today, thanks be to God and to the

generosity of the Middletown UMC church family, we are humbled to share that all needed funds have

been received.

The generosity overflowed in such a way that we have actually received $13,800 over the needed amount.

The additional funds have been directed to cover other future Capital Improvements (i.e., parking lot,

skylight, etc.), as was indicated in the original appeal letter. The gracious generosity of the church family

has removed the constraint that the heating repairs had on the financial life of our church.

We greatly appreciate your support for the mission and ministry that Jesus Christ is doing through the

Middletown United Methodist Church.

Thank you, peace, and God’s blessings. Appreciatively and Yours in Christ, Andrea Jacobs- Finance Chair Lori Crandall- Trustees Chair

Laurel Cline- Lay Leader and Church Council Chair Derrick Doherty- Pastor
