We are very proud of our Sixth Form, which is highly regarded throughout Sheffield and across North Derbyshire. Students experience a first rate curriculum offer and excellent teaching, support and extra-curricular opportunities. Our most recent Ofsted inspection judged the Sixth Form to be good with many outstanding features.

We are also proud of so many of our former students who have already achieved excellent grades at A Level and went on to study at universities across the country. Many of them have entered an impressive range of professions. They often return to school to talk of their success – our alumni are some of the school’s most passionate advocates!

As well as students who study at Meadowhead for their GCSEs, we also welcome students from a wide range of schools to join our Sixth Form at the start of Y12. Those students are made to feel part of the Sixth Form from the moment they arrive.

Our aim is to continue to provide students within the community with an excellent Sixth Form education. We hope you will consider joining us.

Our valuesThe Sixth

teachers I had were excellent

and most importantly they

the best out of me.

I always knew I had someone to talk to if I needed that extra boost. The fact that I will miss so many

teachers and those involved in the Sixth Form shows just how much

everyone at the school genuinely cares. I would not have had that at

any other Sixth Form. STUDENT 2013-15

Studying at Meadowhead

At Meadowhead, students will receive outstanding teaching and learning. The jump between GCSE and A Level is considerable but our students are helped to transition into the Sixth Form through a dedicated programme. We hold a transition event in early July in order to support students.

Our teaching staff are subject experts and share their enthusiasm and passion for the subject with students. For continuing Meadowhead students, our teachers will be familiar faces who you will have known since you joined the school. We regularly meet with students and their families at information evenings and on Progress Day.

Students are taught in small groups (usually 14-18). Students also enjoy access to well-resourced classrooms and our excellent Learning Resource Centre which they can use during private study time.

Alongside high-quality teaching and learning in their chosen subjects, students also take part in our unique enrichment programme.

For one day each week, students are able to choose from the following options:

• follow enrichment courses in cultural studies, sport, Duke of Edinburgh, languages, science and engineering

• complete work experience with an employer of their choice or with one of the school’s trust business partners

• complete work experience in school by supporting younger students in lessons; full training is provided by a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in Learning Support

For work experience, we engage with over 50 well-known local and multinational employers to provide high-quality placements in a wide variety of industry sectors: engineering & construction, sports & leisure, hospitality & catering, legal & financial, business administration and education. Visit our website for more details and links to all Trust Partner websites.

During Year 13, students will be supported in applying for university, apprenticeships or employment. As well as being incredibly beneficial for personal development, these activities also support successful applications.

Information, advice and guidance

At Meadowhead all Sixth Form students belong to a tutor group with a dedicated tutor. The Head of Sixth Form works with a team of experienced staff to support and guide all students. Throughout Years 12 and 13, students receive support and guidance to help them achieve their potential and to make the right choices when they leave Meadowhead. Students also have access to the school's independent careers advisor who will meet with students regularly during their time with us to offer impartial advice and guidance.

Students and Sixth Form staff meet for a briefing on Wednesday morning and this is followed by a one hour tutorial. Here are some of the topics we cover during tutorial time:

• Preparation for UCAS and course search

• Alternative options to University

• Support for UCAS application

• Preparation for interviews

• Conducting research, referencing and plagiarism

• Revision strategies

• Independent living

• Landlords and renting

• Financial education

• Safer driving

The football scholarship

A football scholarship is available for talented footballers who will join an elite squad run by professional coaches from Sheffield FC. Students will be able to combine a full 'A' Level/BTEC programme of studies within the scholarship at Meadowhead Sixth Form as well as having access to training and game experience. This has the potential to provide a realistic pathway into semi-professional/non-league football. Trials will be required to access the programme.

Trips, events and guest speakers

As a Sixth Form, we are proud of our extensive range of trips and visits. We hold an annual Leavers' Ball at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel.

In recent years, trips and visits have included an expedition to Morocco, a visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a trip to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, a tour of the main cultural sites in Sheffield and our annual welcome trip in the September of Y12.

We also work with the rest of the school to support events such as the annual Sports Day, the Everyone a Writer celebration evening and drama performances. Students can also attend the Sixth Form Book Group and complete Duke of Edinburgh Silver and Gold Awards.

At

Meadowhead,

I’ve always had help

when I’ve asked for it,

everyone has been so friendly

and my teachers have been so

supportive. No matter how busy

they were, they always made

time for me.

Student voice

We believe that the best form of education emerges from a partnership between teachers, students and their families. With this in mind, we regularly consult with students and parents about our Sixth Form provision. Students elect a Sixth Form student president and vice-president and these students, alongside a team of academic reps, raise concerns and questions. Such representation ensures that the student experience is the best it can possibly be. Elections are held for these positions each October.

How to apply (2016 entry)

Students usually apply for Sixth Form during the autumn of Year 11. Our entry requirements ask that students achieve five GCSEs at grade A* to C and usually at least a B (GCSE) or a Merit (BTEC) in their chosen subjects. For some subjects, the entry requirements are even higher. Students usually choose three subjects and study them for two years. Students with very high GCSE attainment (at least six A grades) may wish to study four subjects. A full list of our entry requirements can be found on the school website.

In 2015, over 90% of our leavers rated our teaching as good or excellent. SIXTH FORM LEAVERS 2015

Meadowhead students

You will be supported through the application process during Learning Management lessons. Additional support will be available from the Sixth Form team. You will be able to submit your application from late November onwards. Interviews are usually held in December.

New students

We warmly welcome students from other schools to join our Sixth Form. If you are from a Sheffield school, you should also be supported through UCAS progress by your form tutor. If you are a student from outside Sheffield, please contact the Sixth Form team for an application form.

If your application is successful, we will contact you directly to arrange an interview.

Open evenings and arranging a visit

Our Sixth Form open evening will be held on Wednesday 4th November 2015 from 6pm-8pm. At this event, you will be able to talk to relevant subject staff, meet our tutor and support team and talk to some of our current students. You will also be able to view our specialist rooms and impressive facilities in Science, Sport and Exercise, Art, Textiles and Product Design.

Should you wish to arrange a visit on a different date or come to see the school in action during the daytime, please contact the Sixth Form team on 0114 237 2723, ext. 716.

Sixth Form extension opening 2015-16

We are excited about our new purpose built Sixth Form Centre for which building work began in Autumn 2015. This state of the art centre will feature study areas, teaching rooms, a common room and the Sixth Form team office.
