Learning IntentionToday we are learning how to represent fractions using decimals and percentages.

Success Criteria I will be able to convert between fractions, decimals and percent.

Can you think of anywhere you might see the % sign or use percentages?

Percent means DIVIDED INTO ONE HUNDRED and is expressed using a % sign.

It means we are dividing 1 whole into 100 parts.

For example, if I were to write the decimal 0.78

What are the place value columns we are working with?

Tenths and Hundredths.

Thursday- Week 9

9.15- 10.00am – Numeracy

How can we express this another way I hear you ask?

Well…If we activate our place value knowledge, we know that 0.78 can also be written as;

seventy-eight hundredths or the fraction 78/100 (seventy-eight over 100).

Another strategy we can use to convert a decimal number to a percentage is to multiply it by 100.

OR move the decimal point two places to the RIGHT.

Converting decimals into percentages we multiply the decimal by 100. Percent means per hundred (century)

Multiply 0.125 by 100:

0.125 × 100 = 12.5

Put the percent sign:

0.125 × 100 = 12.5%

Answer 0.125 = 12.5%

You may well ask, what if my decimal was 1.125?

In this case you would have 1 whole…..plus 12.5% of 1 whole.

Below is an MAB hundreds block. This means that each square equals 1% of 100%

How do we work out the missing percentage?

How can we convert each percentage to a decimal?

Fraction?
