Sealing the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico:Hunger hydraulic cylinders to the rescue

Hydraulic cylinders made by Hunger Hy-draulics are in wide use around the world – in-cluding in the spectacular containment andcleanup effort that followed the accidentalsinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig inthe Gulf of Mexico in late April this year. TheGerman company is the maker of the custom-built hydraulic cylinders used by the “Discover-er Enterprise” und “Discoverer Clear Leader”deep sea drill ships deployed during thecleanup. At MDA – Motion, Drive & Automation2011, Hunger will be showcasing the cutting-edge hydraulic technologies and processesthat are vital to operations of this kind.

Custom-built hydraulic cylinders in actionDeep sea drill ships were used in a number ofoperations aimed at plugging the leaking well, sited 1,500 meters below the surface. Theseinclude the top kill operation, in which largevolumes of cement and mud were pumped intothe wellhead, and the drilling of the reliefwells. In order to be able to drill with the highdegree of accuracy required, drill ships mustbe fitted with special heave compensation sys-tems to compensate for the relative motion be-tween the vessel on the surface and the

seabed. Heave compensation enables the ves-sels to accurately position drill strings up toseven kilometers in length despite wave move-ments of several meters in magnitude. Cus-tom-built hydraulic cylinders made by Hungerwere integral to the heave compensation sys-tems used at Deepwater Horizon. The top killattempts would not have been possible withoutthem. They also enabled the relief wells to bedrilled with such great accuracy that they wereable to successfully intersect a leaking drillstring less than half a meter wide at a depth ofmore than 5,000 meters. This degree of accu-racy also made it possible to pump tens ofthousands of barrels of oil a day up to drillships on the surface via a containment capplaced over the well riser. Hunger hydrauliccylinders played a decisive part in the successof this technically very challenging, expensiveand protracted operation.

MDA a pivotal know-how transfer hubAs the world’s leading international trade fairfor fluid power and power transmission tech-nology, MDA is the perfect platform for show-casing cutting-edge technology to a wide audi-ence and discussing promising new solutions.

Dr. Ingo Rühlicke, head of Engineering and Ex-port at Walter Hunger GmbH & Co. KG, agrees:“The MDA trade fairs now being held in a num-ber of key markets around the world are idealfor getting our product range and state-of-the-art solutions in front of a diverse customer au-dience. Quite often the dialogue with cus-tomers that takes place at these sorts ofevents gives rise to ideas for new technical de-velopments.”

The drill ship “Discoverer Clear Leader” carriedthe central drill string and its ring array of heavecompensation cylinders.
