The Young Muslim's for Faith and Action (YMFA--

Canton youth group) is holding their annual camp this

summer on June 25-27th. It will be at the Muslim owned

campsite, Camp Taha in Coloumbiaville, MI.

They are looking for small, or big businesses or families

who would like to sponsor their camp. Any amount

would be appreciated.

A sponsorship of $200 gets your name on the t-shirts and

a sponsorship of $500 gets your LOGO on the shirt.

Sponsorship costs will cover:

$8,000 camp site

$1,500 transportation

A Visit to the DIA Areeba Haider

There are many great artistic attractions in the Detroit Area, but some-

thing I believe is more personal to Muslims in the area is a gallery in the Detroit

Institute of Arts. A permanent exhibit of Islamic Art has been opened, and it

boasts many beautiful creations, including the Quran of a Mogul Conqueror from

the 15th Century. Also among the many treasures now on display is a velvet

summer-floor covering made in the late 1600’s in turkey that is thought to be the

largest of its kind.

One reason to visit this exhibit is because it is more than just looking at an

old piece of art. These pieces of art are proof that the Islamic empire influenced

other regions with more than just the religion itself. It is important to know

about these kinds of gallery openings because it help you gain a better under-

standing of the Muslim Era.

One of my personal favorites was a tile wall that illustrated the story of

Prophet Yusuf (pbuh). I think that this exhibit is definitely worth going to, be-

cause you are not only gaining a sense of the American culture from the mu-

seum, but also the culture from the Islamic rule. But this exhibit is not only for

the Muslims. During my visit to the gallery, I noticed many interested non-

Muslims gazing at the art in wonder. Art like this is something everyone can en-

joy and learn from.

If you choose to visit the DIA, more exhibits worth seeing are the African

American Art, Native American Art, and Egyptian Art exhibits.
