GREETINGS TO OUR DONORS

“Healthcare consumers

ultimately benefit

from the MCPHS

proactive approach

to contemporary

healthcare careers

education. Donors

provide essential

financial support

to students, the

beneficiaries of

this leading-edge

orientation.”

I AM PLEASED TO PRESENT the MCPHS University annual Report on Giving. This publication is dedicated to the donors whose charitable contributions support the career-focused dreams of our students, and it chronicles the philanthropic activity of all donors during fiscal year 2015. Between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2015, MCPHS University recorded nearly 2,300 gifts made by more than 2,000 donors. Together these donors delivered $2.2 million, supporting programs and services that are vital to the educational and career-preparation experiences of our students.

MCPHS was recently recognized in a U.S. Department of Education study as the educator of top earners, ten years post-graduation, in New England. Their median annual income of $116,400 ranks among the top for alumni of every college and university in the United States. Yet the results of this study are not the only bases for evaluating an MCPHS education. Career satisfaction, student loan repayment capacity, and expanding professional opportunities are three among many other measures that support our students’ decisions to pursue an MCPHS education.

Donors play a key role in supporting student education. During fiscal year 2015, 55 scholarship funds received financial support that exceeded $300,000. Nearly 250 Reunion Class Gifts, totaling more than $50,000, benefited peer tutoring services and summer internship stipends. Nearly 50 alumni and friends participated in the Laying the Foundation campaign, an initiative that promotes campus beautification and renewal efforts in Boston, Worcester, and Manchester through gifts to the Annual Fund.

Charitable foundations supported student scholarship awards and the purchase of mobile patient-care technology that benefits underserved community residents. Other donors made legacy gifts that will support MCPHS long into the future and, in some cases, provide donors with their own sources of lifetime income as well.

The transformation of our 191-year-old institution from college to university status has profound implications for the future of healthcare careers education. This transition reflects the continuing diversification of our academic programs and underscores our commitment to deliver an outstanding interdisciplinary and interprofessional education to each student. As healthcare consumers, we ultimately benefit from this proactive approach to contemporary healthcare careers education. As donors we provide essential financial support to students, the beneficiaries of this leading-edge orientation.

Thank you again for your support.

ARE LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES LIMITED? Maybe for some. Probably not for John Robert O’Connor BSHP ’08. His autobiography might best be entitled Thriving Through Change.

Life-changing experiences for John Robert O’Connor began when he moved from South China, ME, his hometown of fewer than seven thousand residents spread over fifty square miles, to MCPHS University–Boston’s two-acre campus, where nearly five thousand students are now enrolled. He remembers, “I knew I wanted to experience city life. I’d always loved my childhood visits to the Museum of Science, so I was excited to be accepted to MCPHS University.” Less than two years later, after serving in multiple MCPHS student government, residence life, and student activities positions, the budding pharmacist changed again, becoming, as he says, “a Health Psychology major, so I could pursue a career in student affairs and higher education.”

The plan worked, but not without other detours and changes. Following his MCPHS graduation, John Robert completed master’s degrees in College Student Development and Counseling and Applied Positive Psychology. His nascent musical career, which bloomed as a cellist with the Colleges of the Fenway Orchestra, transitioned to a position in the Auburn (NY) Chamber Orchestra and playing in pit orchestras for productions of “Shrek the Musical” and “Damn Yankees.” He also traveled to Russia and Great Britain with Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. And, in another life-changing decision, John Robert took

up running. He ran the Chicago Half Marathon to celebrate his twenty-fifth birthday, and he plans to complete the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, his first marathon, after his thirtieth birthday next fall.

John Robert’s career path, which led to his current position at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, as director of student activities and leadership, was a natural progression for an alumnus who thrived in both student-life activities and academics. He credits Stacie Spencer, PhD, for “her attention to detail and commitment to teach us how to be excellent behavioral scientists.” He continues, “Dr. Marie Dacey and Dr. Fred Garafalo were also huge influences…Dr. Garafalo taught me critical thinking skills in a unique way.”

Some alumni never return to campus. Not John Robert O’Connor. Four years after his MCPHS graduation, following stints at Columbia University and Emmanuel College, John Robert returned to MCPHS as associate director of student activities at a time of transition in the Office of Student Affairs. Less than a year later, after serving on a search committee for a new assistant dean, he answered the call of change–again, this time from Thomas College in Waterville, ME, where he served as coordinator of student activities before moving on again to his position at St. Lawrence University.

Notwithstanding location and job changes, John Robert keeps his MCPHS doors propped open. “I was part of the Mentor-a-Cardinal program in 2011 and 2012 and spent a few years on the Young Alumni Council.” He is very proud of his status as a Constant Cardinal, a title that he earned as a donor who has made gifts to MCPHS for at least five consecutive years. “Sometimes alumni don’t realize that even small contributions add up…I love the novel opportunities that MCPHS offers to give directly to a student scholarship fund.” That’s clearly important to an alumnus whose career consistently has been devoted to student well-being but whose life has been marked by change focused upon progress, experience, and achievement. n

MARY (LEET) KELLERMAN DH ’66 of Billerica, MA, doesn’t regard her degree from the Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists as a ticket to personal and professional success. That would be too easy. Rather, she feels that Forsyth offered an experiential “gateway to the Tufts Periodontal Clinic, Harvard Dental Clinic, Boston City Hospital, a special needs school, and a detention center and home for young mothers.” Each opportunity, she recalls, allowed her to measure and evaluate how her personal and professional interests aligned with patient and community needs. That’s why, as a high school graduate with interests in biology, public service, and oral health, she first graduated from Forsyth and later secured her master’s degree in Dental Public Health at Boston University.

Back in 1964, Mary remembers, “Forsyth was the only ‘name’ and the only ‘one’ for aspiring dental hygienists, having established a nearly fifty-year record of excellence in dental hygiene education.” Even though her class of one hundred students was the first under Forsyth’s affiliation with Northeastern University, she says, “All my instructors and professors were great. My classmates would probably pick Ms. Barbara Schultz and Dr. Martin Dunn, who still teaches students, as favorite clinical instructors.” These faculty members reinforced Mary’s commitment to oral health and public service, leading to a career that has included working in private dental offices and public health organizations while also participating in a fluoride rinse and sealant program in elementary schools and serving on a

project that resulted in fluoridating the Billerica water supply.

As she approaches her fiftieth Forsyth Reunion, Mary still works in a public health clinic where she “can treat many in need and where Forsyth students still rotate through.” Nearly five decades post-graduation, she notes, “I have always felt that I could return. In fact, I have returned to Forsyth for advanced periodontal

classes, and I still attend the annual Esther M. Wilkins Symposium for continued learning.” She credits the MCPHS/Forsyth affiliation for encouraging growth in interprofessional collaboration. “Being affiliated with MCPHS has added to our involvement with a larger health team including pharmacists, optometrists, nurse practitioners, and even now acupuncturists. This is an exciting development for patients, as well as beneficial for practitioners to be a part

of the ‘global world’ of healthcare.”Yet roots are also important. That’s

why Mary served on the Alumni Board of Directors, financially supported the Campaign for the Forsyth Dental Hygiene Program when the first Esther Wilkins Dental Hygiene Clinic was built, and, perhaps most importantly, provides annual gifts because, she says, “I realize the expenses that students incur as well as the cost of courses and instruments.” As a soon-to-be fiftieth-Reunion alumna, she is also serving as an enthusiastic class agent who notes, “In honor of our 50-year reunion, I would love to see all of my classmates try to support students with at least a minimal ‘50 mark’ contribution of $50, $150, $250, $500!”

Looking back on her wide-ranging dental hygiene career, Mary (Leet) Kellerman advises Forsyth students, “You can work hard and really enjoy your careers. Just like I did, find and use to maximum advantage your own gateway to personal and professional success.” n

RAMACHANDRAN “TR” THIRUCOTE PHD ’92 AND

SAGEDA MAHMOUD-THIRUCOTE BSP ’89 bring unique credentials to the ever-expanding roster of MCPHS married couples. Unlike many but certainly not all MCPHS couples, Dr. and Mrs. Thirucote have each followed different career paths since their respective MCPHS graduations. Sageda worked her way up the corporate ladder of expanding management responsibilities at CVS, Harvard HealthCare, Chartwell Home Therapies, Payless Pharmacy, and Rite Aid. Dr. Thirucote, also known as TR, who earned his PhD in industrial pharmacy, has pursued his own passion for “developing novel products for unmet medical needs.”

Yet these Atherton, CA-based alumni both credit MCPHS for delivering the education that has led to career success. “The internship rotations in undergraduate school provided great real-life expectations for the profession, especially in the local community, heavily dominated by prestigious healthcare institutions such as Beth Israel and Harvard,” says Sageda. Her husband observes, “I was fortunate to be able to work as a graduate assistant in industrial programs, experiences which laid a great foundation for my career.”

In addition to their common MCPHS ancestry, TR and Sageda share a notable trait, a keen aptitude for successful business development. TR brings more than thirty years of experience and management in the design and development of dosage forms in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries to his current position as chairman and chief executive officer of TesoRx, a pharmaceutical company that he founded in 2010, which is focused on the development and commercialization of specialty pharmaceutical products in

niche markets with significant sales potential. The company is leading the way in developing several niche products and is one of the first to have developed a novel oral delivery for a condition commonly known as Low-T.

After rising to the position of pharmacy district manager, Sageda oversaw 54 stores—one of the largest number of stores assigned to a single manager in the national Rite Aid chain—for a period of four years. Then, in 2003, she took up the company’s newly created international recruiter position. This move transitioned her responsibilities from management oversight to recruitment of foreign pharmacists for deployment throughout the United States. She held the position for three

years. Capitalizing on her vast management and recruitment experience, in 2006 Sageda purchased and operated Baneth’s Pharmacy, an independent retail pharmacy in Menlo Park, CA, with ten employees. She sold Baneth’s to CVS in 2013 and now works as a supervisor for Kaiser Permanente.

The Thirucotes’ family connections with their alma mater hardly begin and end with Dr. and Mrs. Thirucote. “Sageda has a brother, sister, and brother-in-law who have graduated from MCP,” says TR. The connections also run deep in other ways. For example, both alumni are members of the University Corporation and serve as generous and consistent leadership donors. TR explains, “We want to give back to the community and to our alma mater for providing us with a stable foundation for the successes we have had in our careers. We feel strongly that supporting MCPHS is important; however, it is up to each individual as to how he or she chooses to support the institution.” He continues, “We hope our support will help take the University to the next level.” n

STEVEN CROSBY BSP ’01 is always offering advice to MCPHS University students. Why not? It’s part of his job as assistant professor of pharmacy practice. But he frames every hint, every suggestion, and every directive in special context. “Recognize the gravity of your responsibility as a student, healthcare professional, and citizen,” he says. “MCP has provided you with a tremendous opportunity to acquire skill in a professional discipline; your actions should reflect accordingly.”

Having worked in pharmacies before entering MCPHS as a student, Steven Crosby was career-focused at a young age. He reflects, “The program offered by MCP was ideal because it allowed me to apply practical experience at a very early phase in my academic career.” He also benefited from the teaching skills of many MCPHS faculty members, including such renowned educators as Timothy Maher, BS, PhD ’80, professor of pharmacology and associate dean of Graduate Studies–School of Pharmacy; William McCloskey BA, BSP ’75, PharmD ’77, professor and vice-chair; and Ahmed Mehanna, PhD, professor of medicinal chemistry. He remembers, “All facilitated development of different skill sets that informed my practice as a pharmacist and as a researcher, and my professional evolution as an academician.” The inspiration of these educators led Steve to secure a graduate degree in medical science from Boston University School of Medicine in 2003. Then, with master’s degree in hand, he returned to MCPHS and has never left.

In 2011 Steven Crosby was appointed assistant professor of pharmacy practice, having previously served as instructor of pharmaceutical sciences and as APM lab instructor/assistant coordinator. Although his progression up the academic ladder has been swift, many things about his life and interests haven’t changed. He commutes from the South Shore, just as he did as a student. He remains involved

with APhA student group activities because, as he says, “This experience introduced me to professional association activities…Professional service activity remains an important part of my faculty role.” Music and athletics, two of Steve’s student recreational pursuits, also play prominent roles in his day-to-day life nearly two decades later.

During Steve’s tenure, the university has transitioned to a multiple professional discipline academic environment. Although he appreciates the institution’s legacy of pharmacy education excellence, he points out, “It’s important to have

an eye toward future prominence and viability. Growth and diversification are at the core of continued success.” Of course, it doesn’t hurt that this mild-mannered, well-liked faculty member also serves as a student mentor, provides support for cocurricular activities such as community outreach, and, he says, “participates in activities of other departments such as the Office of Admission, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Office of University Advancement. “We have different roles, but we are members of the same team, so the overall set of goals is common.”

Steven Crosby is an MCPHS booster and a loyal donor. “Quite simply,” he says, “it’s a dynamic where one’s place within a profession does not exist without the University’s involvement. It’s equally important to support the aspirations of future health professionals.” He advises, hints, suggests, and directs students because “the opportunity that MCPHS provides for students to thrive as future healthcare professionals is meaningful and essential to a healthy future for all.” n

THE MCPHS PILLAR SOCIETY

MCPHS Pillar Society members include alumni, faculty, staff, and friends who invest in the University’s future greatness, continued growth, and leadership with their legacy gifts. While the society is relatively new, legacy giving to MCPHS is not. Bequests and other forms of legacy giving have made substantial contributions to the University’s success, providing funds for scholarship and student activities, classrooms,

and career awareness programs, as well as technology and teaching resources, among dozens of other purposes benefiting students and faculty.

The following list honors members of the MCPHS Pillar Society, whose legacy gift commitments demonstrate confidence in MCPHS University as a leading institution of higher learning devoted to excellence in education, scholarship, research, and public service.

WAYS TO GIVE Gifts to MCPHS University can be made in several ways:

• The easiest gifts to convey include cash and marketable securities. Another convenient way to make a gift using a major credit card is to visit the secure website at alumni.mcphs.edu, click on “Give to MCPHS” and then click on “Give Now.” MCPHS also encourages donors to verify with either their own or their spouse’s employer’s human resources or personnel offices whether the employer matches charitable contributions, or use the Matching Gift tool found on the online giving form.

• MCPHS offers donors the opportunity to establish life-income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. These vehicles allow donors to simultaneously support MCPHS and receive income. • MCPHS also encourages prospective donors to name the University as the recipient of a deferred gift such as a bequest or as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement account.

MONAHAN SOCIETYWhat is the Monahan Society? The Monahan Society facilitates and recognizes leadership-level charitable support made by recently graduated alumni. Alumni who have graduated within the ten most recent years become Monahan Society members when, during the course of one fiscal year, they make gifts starting at only $500. These donors receive a minimum of President’s Circle–level benefits, privileges, and recognition.
