mcneese visits alcorn state for second road trip in three weeks • McNeese has been a bit of a road warrior early on this season as it’ll travel to Lorman, Mississippi for a 6 p.m. kickoff against Alcorn State on Saturday.• The Cowboys opened the season on Thursday, Aug. 31, with a 37-35 last second loss at Nicholls.• Four of McNeese’s first six games are away from home this season.

GAMEDAY NOTESmcneese vs. the swac • Saturday’s game will be the 12th meeting all-time against a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Cowboys have posted a perfect 11-0 mark against the SWAC and are 2-0 against Alcorn State. McNeese’s last SWAC opponent was against Prairie View in a 48-16 win on Sept. 13, 2014 in Lake Charles. The Cow-boys were ranked No. 6 in the FCS polls at the time.

running backs attck • McNeese’s three main running backs have combined to rack up 313 of the team’s 384 rushing yards on the season, and all three - Justin Pratt, Benjamin Jones and David Hamm, are all close in range of each other in individual rushing yards.• All three are different types of back - Pratt, who is low to the ground and can cut on a dime; Hamm, who is a bruiser and can power over defenders; and Jones, a speedster, who if gets out in the open, will be tough to catch.

shelby extends reception streak • With a game-high 6 catches for the game against FIT, senior WR Kent Shelby has now caught at least one pass in 26 consecutive games. That’s every game he’s played in his McNeese career.• Shelby now has 91 catches in his career, moving him to No. 14 on the school’s all-time reception list. His 1,394 career receiving yards has moved him into 13th on the career list.

tabary also climbing career charts • Junior QB James Tabary entered the season ranked 10th on the school’s career list in passing yards, 8th in completions, 9th in TD passes, and just outside the top 10 in attempts.• Through the first two weeks of the season, the junior as completed 46 of 71 pass-es for 487 yards and 5 TDs. He’s ranked 7th in the school record book with 28 career touchdowns and is 8th with 3,523 passing yards.

injury report vs. florida tech • Wide receiver Parker Orgeron is back and expected to be in the starting lineup. He missed last week after suffering a concussion at Nicholls.• Quarterback James Tabary was banged up after taking five sacks and getting hit nearly a dozen other times against FIT. He sat out practice on Monday and Tuesday but is expected to play on Saturday.• LB Christian Jacobs and DL Kurt Viges are out.• RB Ryan Ross worked out in pads for the first time this week since breaking his ankle during the spring game back in April. He’ll be evaluated again in 2-4 weeks and a decision on his availability will be made, whether he joins the team or takes a redshirt.• TE DeonDre Skinner returned to the team this week.

primary targets for tabary • A total of 13 different sets of hands have caught passes through the first two games.• Leading the way is Kent Shelby who has caught 10 passes for 109 yards. • Shelby is nearly perfect when being targeted as well, hauling in 10 passes on 12 targets.• Tabary’s favorite target by percentage is Tavarious Battiste, who has been targered 16 times (23% of total attempts).• Tabary has completed 85% of his passes on second downs (22 of 26) and is 33 of 44 for 75% on 2nd and 3rd downs combined.

red-zone improvements • McNeese struggled in the red-zone against Nicholls in the season opener, scoring just three touchdowns in eight appearances. McNeese had the ball at the Nicholls 16 or closer five times in the first half and settled for zero touchdowns.• That number improved greatly against Florida Tech as the Cowboys found pay dirt all four times in the red-zone.• On the season, McNeese has scored 10 times in 12 red-zone appearances, seven of those touchdowns and three field goals.

ryan ross cleared for workouts after spring injury • Senior running back Ryan Ross was dealt a blow during the spring game in April when he went down with a broken ankle. After surgery to repair the injury and a very aggressive rehabilitation period, Ross was cleared last week to resume work-outs. Ross will be evaluated in 2-4 weeks to see if he’s full strength. Since he played as a true freshman, he still has a redshirt year should he need it.

jimmy converse on piesman watch list • Junior offensive lineman Jimmy Converse is one of 44 Division I offensive and defensive linemen who have been named to the 2017 Piesman Watch List by SB Nation. Now in its third year, the Piesman Trophy is awarded to the offensive or de-fensive lineman that makes the most impressive play as a runner, receiver, or passer.

cowboy stadium one of top in fcs • McNeese’s Cowboy Stadium has been ranked one of the 10 best football stadiums in all of FCS according to fans who voted on a poll on both Twitter and Facebook and was conducted by the NCAA. • “The Hole,” which is the nickname for the Cowboys’ venue due to the playing field being settled over 10 feet into the ground, ranked as the fourth-best stadium by fan voting, following Montana’s Washington-Grizzly Stadium, North Dakota State’s Fargodome, and James Madison’s Bridgeforth Stadium.

LanceGuidrywasastaronthefieldfortheMcNeeseCowboysintheearly90s;becameastaronthesidelineasadefensivecoordinatorinthe1990sandthe2000s;andlastyear,wasthestarcandidatetobecomeMcNeese’s15thheadcoach in school history. He wore No. 15 as an All-Southland Conference defensive back, helping the Cowboys to two conference champion-ships,andtheprogram’sfirst-everplayoffappearanceandvictory(1991and1993). Nowinhissecondseasonatthehelm,he’sreassumingthecontrolsofadefensiveunitthathasbeenoneofthemostdominantintheleaguesincehisplayingdays–theDefenseWithAttitude–ashelookstobuildonMcNeese’sleague-record number of conference titles to capture the number he wore from 1990-93 – No. 15. Guidry and the Cowboys went through some growing pains in 2016 as the team featured a new quarterback, young running back and offensive line groups, and some young defensive backs. The Cowboys also dealt with some injuries to some key players but still managed to post a 6-5 record for their 12th consecutive winning season – the fourth longest streak of all current FCS teams. ThreeofMcNeese’sfivelosseswherebyascoreorlesswhiletheothertwoweretotheNo.1teaminthecountry(56-43atSHSU)and35-0vs.No.22CentralArkansas.ThatUCAgamewasanemotionalonefortheCowboys,andespecially

for Coach Guidry, when on the morning of the contest, he found out his brother had tragically and unexpectedly passed away. Guidry did not take the sideline for that game and his absence was felt. Oneweeklater,theCowboysrolledoverNorthwesternState,48-27,andwentontowinthreeoftheirfinalfourgamesbyanaveragescoreof41-17. Offensively, the Cowboys posted one of their greatest seasons in school history, led by transfer quarterback James Tabary who threw for 3,036 yards, the second-most in a season in school history, and 23 touchdowns. The New Orleans native who came to McNeese via Arkansas State, set records for most completions(249)andattempts(415)inaseason;mostgameswith25ormorecompletions(6);andtiedrecordsformostgamesthrowingfor300yardsormore(4)andtouchdownpassesinagame(5). Defensively, McNeese ranked second in the league in total, rushing and scoring defense, but the 285 points allowed were the most given up in three years while the unit ranked near the bottom of the league in red-zone defense by allowing 28 scores in 30 tries. In2015,Guidry,astheteam’sdefensivecoordinator,helpedMcNeesewinits14thSouthlandConferencechampionship,aleaguerecord,whiletheteamposted a perfect regular season. Hisdefenseranked12thnationallyintotaldefense(allowingatadover300yardspergame),thirdinbothscoringdefenseandredzonedefense,andfourthinrushingdefense.Inaddition,theCowboys’defenserankedsecondin4th-downconversiondefensesixthinfirstdownsdefense,andseventhin3rd-down conversion defense. “There are seven keys to our program that we will install that will pertain to players, coaches and support staff,” said Guidry. “Number one is enthusiasm. That is the No. 1 thing to me. When you come to work, you must come with a positive attitude. Happy people are usually successful. “Compete.Wewill compete on and off the field.Toughness. We will never quit and will have great pride. Number four is preparation. You have to know what to expect, and when adversity hits, you will know how to respond. Accountability. We will always be prompt and dependable. We will set goals for every task, and every task will be met. “The last thing to me is team unity. We are a family here at McNeese. It will always be family here.” McNeese represents Guidry’s first full-time headcoaching job at the collegiate level. He acted as in-terim head coach at Miami University (Ohio) in 2010and Western Kentucky University in 2012, leading both teams into postseason bowl games. He began his coaching career as a graduate assis-tantatMcNeesein1994thenreturnedastheschool’sdefensive coordinator from 2000-04, and in 2008, coached the defensive backs. In his now 11 combined years on the McNeese staff, the Cowboys have compiled a 92-40 record, including a

55-20 mark in Southland Conference games. Dur-ing that time, McNeese has won four conference championships (2001-03, 2015), made six FCSplayoffappearances(1994,2000-03,2013,2015)and played in the 2002 FCS National Champion-ship game. Before returning to McNeese prior to the 2013 season, Guidry served as defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky in 2011 and 2012 and was named interim head coach on Dec. 8 of 2012 to lead WKU against Central Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 26, a game the Hilltoppers dropped 24-21. He coached three players while at WKU - DE Quanterous Smith, LB Andrew Jackson and S Jonathan Dowling - that went on to be selected in the NFL Draft. Guidry joined the Miami staff after serving as the defensive secondary coach at McNeese in 2008 and led the Redhawks to a 35-21 victory over Middle Tennessee as the interim head coach in the 2011GoDaddy.comBowl,helpingMiamifinishoffa 10-4 season after going 1-11 the previous year. MiamibecamethefirstFBSschooltogofromdou-ble-digit losses to double-digit wins in consecutive seasons. Guidry helped orchestrate a similar turn-around in 2011, helping WKU to back-to-back win-ning seasons in 2011 and 2012, including the pro-gram’sfirst-everbowlbidsincejoiningtheFBS. His 2012 Hilltopper defense was a force na-tionally, ranking in the top 40 in seven different national defensive categories. The Guidry-led defense ranked 23rd nationally in total defense (344.42)and12thinthenationintacklesforloss

pergame(7.42).Hissquadalsorankedatthetopof four defensive categories in the Sun Belt Con-ference, including total defense, pass defense ef-ficiency(128.4),sacks(31)andfirstdowndefense(19.3), while ranking second in rushing defense(136.6),scoringdefense (25.6),passingdefense(206.2)andinterceptions(13). A veteran coach in Louisiana football’s highschool ranks, Guidry served as secondary coach at Leesville High School in 1995 and 1996, helping lead the Wampus Cats to the state championship game in 1995. He also coached defensive backs atCarencro (La.)HighSchool for threeseasons(1997-99), then returned years later to serve astheGoldenBears’headcoach(2005-07). In between his stints at Carencro, Guidry served as defensive coordinator and coached the secondaryatMcNeese (2000-04).TheCowboysreached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in four consecutive seasons (2000-03),won three straight Southland Conference champi-onships(2001,2002,2003)duringthatstretchandlost to WKU in the 2002 FCS National Champion-ship Game.
