Dr. Donald Asher is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the graduate admissions process. Hundreds of thousands of students have seen his lectures, tapes, and teleconferences. He is the author of twelve books, including Graduate Admissions Essays, the best-selling guide to the graduate admissions process, and The Best Scholarships for the Best Students. Asher earned a PhD in human development from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, and has a master’s in human and organization systems from Fielding, a master’s in human resources and organization development from the University of San Francisco, and a bachelor’s in philosophy-religion from Reed College. Asher gives over 150 lectures and workshops per year.

Dr. Linda Prieto grew up working in the agricultural fields of the central San Joaquin Valley in California between the ages of eight and nineteen. It was there she understood first-hand the value of an education and the important role educational opportunities can play in breaking the cycle of poverty. She holds breadth and depth of experiences in education having taught in the K-12 setting as well as in different institutions of higher education both small and large: public, private, secular, Catholic and Hispanic Serving Institutions. Dr. Prieto has also worked in student affairs, with for- and non-profits in both the U.S. and Mexico. She is a talented scholar, researcher, and educator and currently serves as The Vice President of Educational Equity Programs at ALearn SVEF in San José, where she focuses on increasing college access and success for students from educationally underrepresented backgrounds.

Elvira Prieto was born and raised in California’s Central San Joaquin Valley working alongside her parents and siblings in the grape fields and fruit packing sheds of Reedley, CA and surrounding communities in Fresno County. She is the first woman in her family to attend college, receiving her B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University and an Ed.M. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Elvira has worked in higher education, student affairs, academic advising, policy analysis and implementation, and community-based education for over 20 years and she is currently the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Associate Director of El Centro Chicano y Latino and Resident Fellow at Casa Zapata at Stanford University. Elvira’s creative writing and published work is focused on the retelling of life testimonios with the intention of creating spaces of light, love, and healing for individuals and community.

Dr. Marilyn Easter is full professor in the Marketing and Data Analytics Department in the CoB, where she teaches marketing, ethics and managerial communication in both graduate and undergraduate levels. She has earned three teacher excellence awards and has authored or co-authored a book and over 75 articles and papers in areas of technology, diversity training, epistemology, cross-cultural communication, marketing, business communications, and education. Marilyn earned the distinguished “Honorable Mention” at SJSU for her article “Applying Educational Psychology to Business Communication” which was published in the New Zealand Journal for Business Communication. Recently, her article, “Creating Online Learning Spaces for Emerging Markets: An Investigation of the Link Between Course Design and Student Engagement” was voted best paper and published in the Journal of Business and Behavioral Sciences. Marilyn is Founder of the Lucas College of Business G.o.A.L. (Generation of Aspirational Leaders). She is involved in civic affairs. She recently engaged her students in service learning and partnered with community leaders to assist Latina micro-entrepreneurs with promoting their businesses. She is a motivational speaker and appeared on an Emmy-nominated television talk show to discuss the impact of Affirmative Action on higher education. She has received many community service awards.

Marilyn currently serves on the Faculty Rights and the RTP committees. She served as Chair of the Council for Affirmative Action, SJSU; also served on the CSU African American Caucus, and the International Executive Board for the Association for Business Communication. She was also involved in the movement to bring EOP back on campus (at SJSU). In addition, she is a graduate of the University of San Francisco, Denver University, University of Colorado, the National Educators Association/Emerging Leaders Academy in Higher Education, Washington, DC and The C.L. Dellums African American Union Leadership School, UC Berkeley.

Dr. Joseph Brown received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from Southwest Texas State University and a Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University in 1990. After working for IBM as a marketing representative, he was admitted to the PhD program in Social Psychology at Stanford University. His graduate work focused on the influence of stereotypes and prejudice on the intellectual identities and performance of women and minorities. After receiving his doctorate in 2000, he taught at the University of Washington. In January 2003, he returned to Stanford and is now the Assistant Dean for Graduate and Undergraduate Studies and Diversity Programs for the School of Humanities and Sciences.

Puneet Sanghera is an alumna of the NSF-REU RUMBA (Research for Undergraduate students using Molecular Biology Applications) at San José State University where she studied the effects of acute inflammation on spinal cord excitability. She also attended the NSF-REU Integrative Biology Program at UC Berkeley, where she studied the effects of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury. She is a recipient of the CSUPERB-Howell fellowship focusing on women’s health research and the University of the Provost Undergraduate Research Grant. She served on the board of Biology Student Association, Global Medical Brigades, the Beta Upsilon chapter of Alpha Omega Epsilon, and was accepted to the Epsilon Alpha chapter of Tri Beta Biological Honors Society.

She hopes to complete an M.D./Ph.D. program and become a practicing surgeon while also doing clinical research on neurodegenerative diseases. This fall she will be attending the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program at SFSU to obtain a Master of Science in Biomedical Science. Puneet also obtained funding for her degree program from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

Dr. Simon Howard is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Director of the Psychological Social Inquiry (PSI) Lab at Marquette University. He completed his undergraduate degree at San José State University, where he was accepted to the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement program.

As a McNair Scholar, he became interested in the empirical study of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. Dr. Howard went on to earn his Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Tufts University.
