Marines from Toys for Tots will collect additional toys at the MCM Kids Run on Saturday, October 24 in the North Pentagon parking lot and at the MCM Finish Festival on Sunday, October 25.

Used Running Shoes Can Make a Difference

MCM Runners can bring their used–but not abused–running shoes to the Health & Fitness Expo on Oct. 23 and 24 for donation to the MORE Foundation Group, which benefits West Africa’s poorest family farms. Running shoes can be dropped off in bins located at MCM Packet Pick-up.

MORE (Modular Organic Regenerative Environments) works to eradicate poverty in West Africa by offsetting the carbon footprint with trees planted in “Runners Village”–the largest non-governmental village-based tree planting initiative in West Africa. MORE provides athletic shoes to street vendors with 100 percent of the proceeds going to seeds, tools and essential resources for family farms. The shoes benefit West African farmers too, by creating year-round sustained harvests, better nutrition, higher income, health screening and more.

According to MORE, reusing running shoes further promotes global efforts to reuse and recycle. For more information visit MOREFoundationGroup.org.

2015 MCM Course DescriptionThe Marine Corps Marathon is aptly nicknamed the “Marathon of the Monuments,” while offering a beautifully scenic route through some of the most impressive landscape and national monuments Arlington, VA and the nation’s capital have to offer.

The USATF-certified 26.2 mile marathon course starts in Arlington, VA on Route 110 between Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon. The course moves through Rosslyn along Lee Highway before turning on Spout Run and the George Washington Parkway. Runners will experience a steady climb on Lee Highway in the first few miles of the course, but are rewarded with a descent along Spout Run and the Parkway.

After crossing Key Bridge into Georgetown between Miles 4 and 5, runners turn right along the renowned M Street where throngs of spectators will cheer them through the most popular area of historic Georgetown.

From M Street, MCM runners continue turning right onto Wisconsin Avenue and then left onto K Street, and continue to run on K under the Whitehurst Freeway. Runners then make a continuous loop turning right 27th Street right onto I Street, right onto Virginia Avenue and finally turn right onto Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, heading north. It’s on the Parkway that MCM runners will enjoy running along beautifully tree-lined roadways and under historic stone-covered bridges before making a U-turn at the median located at Beach and Shoreham Drives.

After the U-turn, runners follow the southbound lanes of Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway heading past the impressive Kennedy Center and under the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. Between Miles 10 and 11, MCM participants travel parallel to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and then bear left onto Ohio Drive, passing under Arlington Memorial Bridge. Runners remain right of the John Ericsson National Memorial, as Ohio Drive meets Independence Avenue, and right onto Ohio Drive entering West Potomac Park. Runners continue along the scenic Potomac River and through the emotional wear blue Mile of the course where fallen service members are commemorated along the roadway decorated with American flags. Runners continue to travel along Ohio Drive and throughout the Hains Point peninsula to the very end of the point, as Ohio Drive continues along the other side of the peninsula adjacent to the East Potomac Golf Course.

Runners will depart Hains Point, bearing right along the traffic pattern on Ohio Drive as the roadway splits and then turn onto East Basin Drive before making a left onto Maine Avenue. Throughout Miles 15 and 16, MCM runners will continue all along the scenic Tidal Basin with striking views of the Jefferson Memorial. Runners will continue on Maine Avenue as it turns onto Independence Avenue and will head west further along the Tidal Basin crossing over the Kutz Bridge.

On Independence Avenue, MCM competitors will run by the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial and the FDR Memorial. MCM runners then loop back along Independence Avenue on the side closest to the National Mall and the Korean

and WWII Memorials before making a left turn onto 15th Street at the Washington Monument.

MCM runners will continue on the course along the north side of the National Mall, with views of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History and the National Art Gallery at Mile 18, before turning left onto 3rd Street.

The MCM course then moves runners right onto Constitution Avenue traveling toward the majestic U.S. Capitol and continues to turn runners right along the inside of East Capitol Circle and onto 1st Street, at the impressive Capitol dome.

Along the National Mall, runners turn right onto 1st Street Northwest then stay to the left of South Capitol Circle Southwest, right onto Maryland Avenue and then right onto 3rd Street. At this point, runners will turn left onto Jefferson Drive travelling the south side of the National Mall past the Air and Space Museum, the historic carousel, the Smithsonian Castle and the Freer Gallery of Art. Runners then make a left turn onto 14th Street, passing the Holocaust Museum just before they “Beat the Bridge” at Mile 20.

From Miles 20 to 21, runners will cross over the 14th Street Bridge and the scenic Potomac River as they head back into Virginia for the last 10K, where the vibrant colors and energy of Crystal City Family Festival will be on display.

As MCM runners enter into Crystal City, they will travel along Army-Navy Drive turning left onto 12th Street South as it becomes Crystal Drive, enjoying a variety of entertainment along the way. At this point in the course, participants will turn right into the Crystal Park Tower #2 driveway and bear left. They will exit the driveway circle by turning right onto northbound Crystal Drive and continue to bear right until it becomes 12th Street South.

Runners will then turn right onto Long Bridge Drive, parallel to the scenic park. From there, participants bear right onto 10th Street South, left onto South Bell Street and turn left again onto 6th Street South. As they depart Crystal City, runners will turn right onto Boundary Channel Drive toward the Pentagon.

MCM participants will remain on Boundary Channel Drive toward the Pentagon’s North parking lot, parallel to the scenic Potomac River. Once through the Pentagon’s North parking area, MCM participants will travel back onto the Route 110 access road and under the Washington Boulevard overpass, remaining on the northbound lanes.

The MCM course unfurls alongside Arlington National Cemetery then, after turning left onto Marshall Drive, offers a final up-hill challenge to the Marine Corps War Memorial access road and the MCM Finish!

wear blue Mile

While celebrated as a long distance event, the Marine Corps Marathon also serves as a sanctuary for participants to show their love and support for fallen members of the military. This is most significant on the wear blue Mile of the MCM course along Mile 12. Here volunteers, many with a personal connection, hoist American Flags near photographs of Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers who have been killed on duty or while in combat.

Finish Line Hospitality

After receiving the impressive 40th MCM finisher medal from a U.S. Marine, runners proceed to the Marine Corps War Memorial for a photo opportunity with MarathonFoto.

Then MCM participants will pass through the Hospitality Area where they will be presented post-event recovery meal by Fitful containing a proper balance of macronutrients (protein, fats and carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and trace elements) from natural food sources. Every portion has been carefully selected to be easily digested—providing rapid delivery to tired muscles with a goal of helping each runner jump-start the recovery process.

Water by Wegmans, Gatorade and Turbana bananas are also available for each finisher.

Additionally, each runner will be presented with the “Mission Accomplished!” recovery jacket. Unlike the Mylar/foil blankets of the past, the jacket is a reusable, disposable and made of fabric with cotton cuffs, and a zippered front and hood. Water repellent, yet breathable, the recovery jacket is ideally suited for maintaining the core body temperature and protecting each runner from the elements.

Recommended Spectator Route

Key to the incredible support MCM runners receive is the contagious enthusiasm from Marine Corps and civilian volunteers, plus tens of thousands of the Metro-riding, bridge-crossing, map-toting, sign-waving, hand-clapping, “OORAH”ing family and friends. Follow this guide to viewing spots in various on-course locations including the Crystal City Family Festival being held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Crystal City, VA.

The MCM is the world’s largest marathon that does not award prize money to its winners, earning its name as “The People’s Marathon.” However, the MCM proudly offers awards to finishers of all skill levels, recognizing runners from the front of the pack to the final participant who crosses the finish line. Runners receive awards in categories including the Open, Masters, Team, Wheelchair, Hand Cycle, top military finishers, age categories and more.

The following awards are presented on event day:

Middendorf Trophy — Awarded to Top Male & Female Finishers

Presented to the top men and women finishers, the Middendorf trophy is named after J. William Middendorf II, former Ambassador to the Organization of American States, the Netherlands and European Union. While Secretary of the Navy, Middendorf encouraged and approved the first Marine Reserve Marathon.

Penguin Award — Awarded to the final official MCM Finisher

The MCM acknowledges the dedication of every participant, from the first finisher to the final runner to cross the finish line. The Penguin Award is presented annually to the final official finisher upon their 26.2 mile accomplishment. The Penguin Award, also known as Paul the Penguin, became part of the MCM in 2006, when Marine Maj. Megan McClung coordinated the first MCM Forward for service members deployed overseas. The initial event included 100 service members running the MCM while stationed at Al Asad Air Base in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. McClung’s family supported their daughter’s idea of the Penguin Award to motivate service members to the MCM Forward finish. McClung’s family purchased the stuffed penguin named Paul

and sent it on a journey of more than 6,500 miles to Iraq, where Paul was presented at the MCM Forward finish on October 29, 2006. Less than three months later, on December 6, 2006, Major McClung was killed in action in Iraq. During the following MCM in October 2007, the Paul the Penguin Award was added to the specialty award categories. The Penguin Award continues to honor Megan’s positive energy, enthusiasm and her contributions to service members and the Marine Corps Marathon. MCM Headquarters Becomes Fowler HallThe Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) said goodbye to its founding father this year when Col. James Loftus Fowler of Alexandria, VA died on Jan. 20 at the age of 84.

In recognition of Fowler’s establishment of “The People’s Marathon,” MCM headquarters at Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA was dedicated Fowler Hall on Sept. 14. In addition, a Congressional Tribute was made for Colonel Fowler in the House of Representatives by U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones of North Carolina. Jones said it was Fowler’s “one big idea” that helped make “The People’s Marathon” an enduring event.

Nearly four decades of MCM history can be traced back to Fowler, and his plan for a marathon that would showcase the U.S. Marine Corps in a positive light while generating goodwill amid the community and beyond the Marine Corps Base.

According to Fowler, “after the Vietnam War, popularity of the military services declined in the eyes of many. At the same time, distance running was gaining considerable positive attention.”

This thought process led Fowler to write a memo to his superior, Maj. Gen. Michael Ryan, dated Oct. 17, 1975, outlining his plan for a Marine Corps Reserve Marathon, to promote community goodwill, showcase the Marine Corps, serve as a recruiting tool and to give local Marines an opportunity to qualify for the marathon in Boston. These ideas became the tenants of the Marine Corps Marathon, which at its core, promotes physical fitness.

During its inaugural year, the Marine Corps Reserve Marathon included 1,175 registered runners who ran a portion of the MCM course down the George Washington Memorial Parkway and into Old Town Alexandria, VA. That year 1,018 runners completed the event on the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, VA.

“After the first year the dream was realized and something was started to which Fowler saw no end,” said Banker. “Each year Colonel Fowler would be around race weekend and those who knew him could see his glow. I now imagine that when he was alone he would smile and say, ‘I started this!’ ‘Mission Accomplished!’”

“In the years to come, Colonel Fowler will be remembered for his powerful impact and for initiating the unique partnership between the U.S. Marine Corps, the running community and the public at large,” said MCM Director Rick Nealis.

Fowler was inducted into the Marine Corps Marathon’s prestigious Hall of Fame as a member of its first Class in October 2000. Each year, inductees are selected with Fowler’s vision in mind to bring enthusiastic support to “The People’s Marathon” to the U.S. Marine Corps and to engender goodwill.

MCM Goes GreenIn January, the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) received Gold certification, the highest level awarded by the Council for Responsible Sport for being socially and environmentally responsible as a world-class running event.

The MCM was recognized for enacting best practices during the 39th MCM held on Oct. 26, 2014. The MCM earned 45 credits to become the largest marathon to earn this distinction among environmentally-conscious sporting events.

According to the Council, the MCM earned credit for both meeting and exceeding standards for Effective Planning and Communications; Procurement of products and supplies and work with partners with environmental focus; Resource Management; Public Access and Equity for all participants and for the MCM’s ongoing efforts toward building a Community Legacy.

“The Marine Corps Marathon was an early adopter of the Council for Responsible Sport standards, an indicator of its status as a principled organization that brings true value to the local and running communities,” according to Shelley Villalobos, certification director, Council for Responsible Sport. “I salute the MCM’s commitment and efforts around waste minimization, reducing barriers to participation and engaging its audience around important social causes,” she said. “From the MCM’s partnership with the Leave No Trace campaign, to its support for a myriad of MCM Charity Partners, the D.C. Metro area is a better place to live, play and run because this event exists.”

This was the MCM’s first gold certification by the Council for Responsible Sport. The MCM was awarded Silver-level certification in 2009 and again in 2011. The Council awards certification every two years.

The 40th MCM is continuing on its path to decrease any impact the event has on the environment. With more than 60 percent of the MCM course located on National Park lands, the MCM continues partnerships with the National Park Service and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics requesting runners and spectators be considerate while discarding trash -- water cups, plastic bottles, gel packs and clothing items during “The People’s Marathon.” (The MCM is the first marathon to work with these organizations to promote environmental responsibility and respect of public lands).

While more than 30,000 runners, and many more spectators, participate in the 40th MCM and MCM10K, trash containers will be located throughout the MCM start area and along runner corrals positioned on Route 110 in Arlington on event morning. Containers also will be located at every water point and food station along the MCM and MCM10K course and throughout the Finish Festival in Rosslyn, VA.

The MCM and its volunteers and partners -- including the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services -- recycles over 11 tons of trash throughout the event. In addition, six tons of runners’ discarded clothing was picked up from the MCM and MCM10K courses, last year. The clothing was cleaned and then provided to area

shelters with the help of the Rosslyn Business Improvement District, which coordinated clothing pick-up throughout the Finish Festival.

This year, the MCM is also continuing course clean-up efforts with the “Adopt A Mile” program that calls on local volunteer groups to pick up trash and recyclables along the course. The MCM continues to encourage a clean event while sending the messages to

“Stash the Trash” and “Can It” throughout areas of the course.

In addition, the MCM continues to cut down waste with commercial partners like Turbana, to compost discarded banana peels at the Finish Festival, with Relan to re-purpose the finish line banners into tote bags and other items and with Fitful to provide “Mission Accomplished” reusable recovery jackets to MCM and MCM10K runners. These jackets are distributed at runner hospitality instead of Mylar sheets, which are often discarded during marathon events.

The Marine Corps Marathon also encourages runners and spectators to use Metro, to and from the event, and to purchase the SmarTrip card. The card can be used by runners, spectators and volunteers for use on Metrorail and Metrobus.

In addition to the Council for Responsible Sport, the MCM was recognized in 2014 by the Commonwealth’s Virginia Green Program for its “Environmental Commitment” toward recycling, reduction of waste, green signage and for continuing to minimize printed materials and disposable food service products.”

500,000th FinisherThe 39th Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 26, 2014 welcomed the 500,000th finisher to the Marine Corps War Memorial. Joshua Moscow, 23, a native of Lexington, KY, became the 7,320th runner to cross the finish line that day, capturing the MCM’s half–million mark for total finishers since the MCM began in 1976. Moscow, a Capitol Hill staffer, accomplished that milestone for the MCM while completing the 26.2 mile course in 4:31:34. The MCM reached the 100,000 finisher mark in 1990 and topped 200K in 1998. Within six more years, 300,000 finishers completed the MCM. In 2009, the 400,000th finisher completed the MCM.

Armed Forces CompetitionIn association with the Armed Forces Sports Council, the MCM annually hosts the Armed Forces Marathon Competition. Military runners representing each Armed Forces branch arrive to the MCM from around the world to compete in this prestigious and good-natured rivalry. The Armed Forces Sports Program promotes the athleticism and dedication of military service personnel through participation in national and international sports competitions. The winning Armed Forces team is determined by the combined time of the top four male finish times and the combined time of the top two female finish times. The Armed Forces Competition has included men’s teams since 1998. In 2005, military women were included with the men in combined Armed Forces Competition. Starting in 2006, separate teams were formed for Armed Forces women.

MCM Hall of FameEach year, individuals are inducted into the MCM Hall of Fame. These inductees are recognized for the positive impact they have on the success of “The People’s Marathon” as runners, organizers or as distinguished contributors. This years inductees will be awarded on Friday, October 23.

Hall of Fame InducteesClass of 2015 Chas Henry— A combat-decorated retired Marine mustang and celebrated news anchor has enjoyed a storied career as a military journalist and broadcaster. Henry has served the Marine Corps Marathon as a member of the Ad Hoc committee, guest announcer, Runners Conference moderator and as co-host of the Comcast SportsNet “Live From the MCM Start” on event morning. Henry began volunteering with the MCM in 1990, while still on active duty, and completed his first finish at the MCM in October 2001, following the September 11 attacks. Henry returns annually to “The People’s Marathon,” gleaning a positive light on running and the military community.

Olympian Jeff Galloway—Much like “The People’s Marathon,” Jeff Galloway’s innovative Run-Walk-Run program has enabled participants of all skill levels to complete distance events. Galloway, a 1972 Olympian in the 10,000 meters, has been a presence at the MCM for more than 20 years, completing the event a dozen times. Today, Galloway travels across the nation presenting running clinics while encouraging runners to be safer and kinder to their bodies. He will be running the 40th MCM sporting bib number 203, in honor of his 203rd marathon.

Class of 2014 3rd Class Petty Officer Rubén García Gómez—García Gómez has been an active duty member of the Mexican Navy for 25 years. He is one of only two male athletes to have achieved back-to-back wins at the MCM in 2005 and 2006. In 2005, García Gómez won the MCM by just eight seconds, the closest margin in event history. After a brief hiatus from participating in the MCM, García Gómez returned to win the Masters Male title two consecutive years in 2012 and 2013.

Maureen “Moe” Higgins—A former distance cyclist, Maureen Higgins traded her cycle for running shoes in 1986 when she completed her first Marine Corps Marathon. Affectionately known as the Leading Lady of the MCM, Higgins has crossed the finish line more than any other female in event history. In 2013, Higgins was diagnosed and treated for stage 4 breast cancer but still completed the MCM while undergoing chemotherapy.

Class of 2013

Team Hoyt—Dick and Rick Hoyt successfully turned Rick Hoyt’s physical disabilities into the remarkable ability to complete 1,100 running events including 73 marathons, 22 Duathlons, six Ironmans and many other distance events with their “can-do” spirit. The Hoyts completed that MCM in 1982, 1987, 1990, 1992 and 2013. It was during the 1992 MCM that the Hoyts accomplished their marathon PR of 2:40:47 together.

2015 MCM AmbassadorsThe Marine Corps Marathon will bestow the ceremonial title of Ambassador upon individuals who have contributed to the growth, professionalism and enthusiasm for

“The People’s Marathon” throughout their careers and involvement in the organization of the MCM.

Bonnie Carroll is the president and founder of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), a MCM Charity Program for more than 20 years. Her program has brought more than 200 runners annually to the MCM. Carroll, a retired major in the USAF Reserve, founded TAPS following the death of her husband, Brig. Gen. Tom Carroll, killed in 1992, during an Army C-12 plane crash. Carroll’s national program provides front line comfort and care for family members grieving the death of a loved one serving in the armed forces. Carroll serves on numerous boards including the White House Joining Forces Campaign Community Blueprint Advisory Board, the Department of Defense Health Board and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Advisory Committee on Disability Compensation. She has also co-chaired the DOD Task Force on the Prevention of Suicide in the Armed Forces.

This husband and wife duo, Bob and Kirt Elling, were married on the start line of the 1996 Marine Corps Marathon and have completed the event annually since vowing “I Do.” The MCM was Kirt’s second marathon and Bob’s first. It was during that 21st MCM that the couple wore “just married” singlets and Kirt, a beautiful white veil. The Ellings have a combined service to their community of more than 70 years as paramedics and Emergency Medical Service educators. Aside from busy lives, the Ellings continue to make running a priority, having completed a combined 65 marathons. They both look forward to their visit to the Nation’s Capital each October marking their “annual anniversary run.”

GroundpoundersTwo members of the MCM Hall of Fame are also known as the MCM Groundpounders. These individuals have completed all 39 MCMs since the inaugural event in 1976. Both Groundpounders and retired Marine colonels Will Brown and Al Richmond were inducted into the MCM Hall of Fame in 2010, along with then-fellow Groundpounder Matt Jaffe.

Will Brown Bib #41 1st MCM: 3:41:21 39th MCM: 6:42:23 Best MCM finish time: 3:14:37 (1977)

Col. Will Brown, USMCR (Ret.) 69, of Raleigh, NC, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 and served active duty for four years, including a year in Vietnam. He spent 26 years in the Marine Corps Reserve and retired a colonel in 1998. Brown decided to run the very first MCM because it was being sponsored by the Marine Corps Reserve. He sent in his application “in a moment of insanity,” just to see if he could do it. Since the first MCM in 1976, he has completed every event in addition to 45 ultra-marathons and five 100-mile distance events. The MCM has another special meaning for Brown. His father was a WWII Marine who was wounded during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Another family member, a distant cousin of his mother, PFC Rene Gagnon, is one of the Marines raising the flag in the Rosenthal picture that inspired the Marine Corps War Memorial and is the location of the MCM finish.

Al Richmond Bib #40 1st MCM: 4:04:14 39th MCM: 5:43:10 Best MCM Finish Time: 3:16:21 (1979 and 1982)

Col. Al Richmond, USMCR (Ret.) 76, of Arlington, VA began running in high school but then turned to playing football. He later became a halfback at Lehigh University. After graduating and entering the Marine Corps, Richmond’s running consisted primarily of three-mile events as he prepared for the required annual Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test. Upon returning to full-time active duty in 1976 at Marine Corps Reserve Division Headquarters, Richmond got involved in coordinating the inaugural Marine Corps Reserve Marathon. He completed his very first MCM that year and has continued running the event each year. Colonel Richmond has completed 49 marathons, including three Boston Marathons. He says the MCM is an annual fall “rite of passage” and that he hopes he can continue as long as possible, as well as always finish under six hours.
