2014 MARTIN LUTHER KING AWARD RECIPIENT
McKinley is pleased to announce Sammy Mia as the 2014 recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. award sponsored by the United Way of East Central Iowa. Mia supports her school whenever she can and participates in nu-merous school activities including basketball, track, musicals, and Classic Edition. Sammy is also involved in giving back to her community. Mia mows and rakes leaves for her elderly neighbors. She keeps her neighborhood clean by picking up trash. Sammy tries to follow Dr. King’s footsteps by being a leader in and outside the classroom. Sammy was recognized at a celebration lunch in January and featured in the Cedar Rapids Gazette along with other award winners in the area. Congratulations, Sammy!

FREE DENTAL SCREENINGS/SEALANTS
McKinley Middle School will again offer dental screenings this school year. Dental hygienists from St. Luke’s Dental Health Center will be providing the dental services at Cedar Rapids schools.
This free opportunity includes:Dental Screening ReportTooth Sealants (as needed)Fluoride VarnishToothbrush goodie bagMETRO YMCA DAY PASS
Allowing your child to participate will benefit your child by promoting good oral health, preventing cavi-ties in molars and avoiding lost learning time due to dental illness. Dental sealants are a thin plastic coat-ing applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. According to the CDC, they are a safe, effective way to prevent cavities among schoolchildren by providing a physical barrier on the chewing surfaces of teeth. The procedure is completely pain free and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The cost of sealants in a dentist’s office can be as much as $80 per tooth. Fluoride varnish is recommended every 3 to 6 months, research has proven it is effective in stopping the progression of dental cavities.
This free program will take place at McKinley beginning on approximately March 9th and continue through approximately March 10th depending on demand. Please complete the consent form included in the newsletter and return to the health office for your child to receive this service. If your child has received dental sealants or dental screenings in the past, you may sign them up as a recheck and to have the sealants examined and replaced as needed.
Please contact the health office at 558-2519 or the school nurse, Kim Seward, at 558-1162 with any questions or concerns. Thanks for your help in keep-ing your child healthy and ready to attend school! (Caption 5)

MCKINLEY IN THE NEWSMCKINLEY FUNDS POTTER WHEEL THROUGH DONORSCHOOSE.ORG
McKinley was recently mentioned in a Cedar Rapids Gazette article titled, “Teachers Turn to Crowdfunding for Classroom Supplies.” The article talked about how Mr. Upah was able to quickly fund his potter’s wheel by spreading his DonorsChoose.org campaign through social media – “Dona-tions skyrocketed and in just 20 minutes, the project went from half-funded to fully funded. Not only were friends and family giving, but also businesses and anonymous donors, who funded nearly half the project. McKinley Middle School received it new potter’s wheel in October, and it didn’t cost the school a dime.” To read the entire article with photos go to: http://thegazette.com/teachers-turn-to-crowdfunding-for-classroom-supplies-20150112

Join the McKinley Middle School PTA!
What is the purpose of the PTA?
The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) provides volunteers and funding for programs that support the students, school and staff at McKinley Middle School including:
Promote school spirit by coordinating spirit clothing sales Provide volunteer support for fine arts programs and variety show Fund school improvement projects Publish and distribute Track’em Down student directory Help plan and organize the “Bear Walk” (day of wellness/fundraising for outdoor
facilities) Plan 8th grade year-end party Organize teacher appreciation events Provide snacks & water during ITBS testing Facilitate Baby Think It Over program Assist with administration of magazine sales Sponsor “Reflections” art contest Provide volunteer support for landscaping/grounds clean up
How can you support the PTA and get involved?
1. Join the PTA by becoming an official member. The $10.00 per member fee supports National PTA, State PTA and City PTA as well as sustains the McKinley PTA membership.
2. Donate to the Bear Booster. Typically the PTA at McKinley does not conduct fundraisers. The magazines sale is a school sponsored fundraiser and the funds raised go directly to the school. Therefore the PTA relies solely on funds raised at the beginning of the year in this campaign in which every dollar you donate will go directly to the PTA. And because the McKinley PTA is a 501(c) 3 organization your donation is considered a charitable contribution to the extent allowed for tax deduction purposes.
3. Volunteer to help. E-mails will be sent to all PTA members when volunteer opportunities arise.
