GLEASON (October 28) In District 13A football action, the Gleason Bulldogs utilized the scoring of Conner Verdell (eight-yard touchdown pass, keeper touchdown rushes of 12 and 52 yards, 55-yard pick-six intercep-tion) and nine-yard touchdown scamper by Ian Legens to defeat the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers 33-6 and boost its regular season record to 5-5 overall, 1-4 district.

With the win, the Bulldogs ad-vance to the first round of the TSSAA first round playoffs to host South Fulton on November 4.

Gleason’s lone hosting of a TSSAA playoff game occurred in 1982 after it won the district title.

Despite losing to Gleason, the Tigers (4-6) advance to face Clarksville Academy (9-1) on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

Prior to the game, Bulldog Head Coach Noah Lampkins honored Gleason senior Bulldog players Dusty McClure, David Spellings, Conner Verdell, Gabe Lowrance, Zach Mileski, Thomas Fowler, Sam Cosby, Cole Verdell, Braden Stafford, Jon Riley, and Corey Wilson.

returned the Bulldog opening kickoff to the Tiger 17 before being tackled by Zach Mileski. Following impressive stops by Bulldogs Blake Taylor, Gabe Lowrance, Will Clark and a Lowrance quarterback sack, Tiger Williams’ punt on fourth and 15 was fair-caught by Bulldog Chase Ezell at the Gleason 46.

Consecutive rushes by Bulldog running backs Taylor and Mileski moved the chains at the Central 40. Digging in, Tiger defenders Clay Thompson, Tommy King, Colton “Moose” Johnson and Alvin Mitchell slowed the Bulldog advance. Facing fourth and six, Gleason’s gamble paid off via a first down pass completion from Verdell to Thomas Fowler at the central 38. Ramping up, Gleason marched via rushes by Mileski and Taylor to the Central 8. At the 3:55 mark, Bulldog quarter-back Verdell fired a eight-yard scoring strike to David Spellings. Gleason’s PAT kick was blocked as the bulldogs led, 6-0.

Tiger Williams returned the Bulldog kickoff to the Central 31. Following solid blocking by the Tiger line, Williams reeled off consecutive first down rushes to advance the ball across midfield into Bulldog territory. A pass in-terference call against Gleason on third and eight gave the Tigers a

fresh set of downs at the Bulldog 19. Dropping back in the pocket, Williams fired a strike to Elijah Phillips at the Bulldog 1. At the 10:08 mark of the second quarter, Williams followed the Central line surge to paydirt. Tiger kick-er Logan Batte’s PAT kick was blocked as Central knotted the score, 6-6.

As hitting escalated and per-sonal foul flags flew against both teams, Gleason and Central ex-changed punts and battled for field position.

Following another Gleason punt, Central failed to gain a first down and lined up to kick the ball away from its own 48. Disaster struck as the wet pigskin sailed over Tiger punter Williams head. Gathering in the ball, Williams battled Bulldog defenders before being tackled at midfield as the ball was turned over on downs to Gleason.

The Bulldogs utilized a 15 yard gain by Spellings to net a first down at the Central 23. Gambling on fourth and six in the red zone, Gleason gained a first down at the 9 via Legens’ pass reception. With 3:06 remaining in the second stanza, Legens raced right side to paydirt. Gleason’s PAT kick sailed wide to the right as the Bulldogs led 12-6 at the half.

Gleason’s Archie Rich returned the Tiger second half opening kick to the Bulldog 43. Following a six yard gain by Taylor and Spellings two-yard loss via Thompson, Verdell fired a pinpoint strike to Fowler to move the ball down to the Central 23. Rushes by Taylor and Verdell moved the ball to the Tiger 12. At the 8:57 mark of the third canto, Bulldog quarterback Verdell scrambled right side to score. Bulldog Zach Mileski added the two-point conversion via rush

as Gleason widened its lead, 20-6.As the defensive battle raged,

Central and Gleason exchanged punts.

On the ensuing Tiger punt, Bulldog Chase Ezell was drilled by Central’s Phillips and fum-bled as Tiger Alex Smith covered the loose pigskin at the Gleason 42. Central utilized rushes by Thompson, Trezden Tharpe and Williams keeper to move the ball across midfield. Following a first down keeper by Williams at the Bulldog 43, Gleason defenders Austin Perry and Verdell stopped the Tiger march and forced Central to punt away.

Returning the favor, Central’s defense stopped Gleason and forced the Bulldogs to punt away as time expired in the third stanza with Gleason leading, 20-6.

Following a sack of Tiger quarterback Williams by Reece Montgomery, Gleason’s solid pass coverage forced the Tigers to punt.

At the 9:57 mark of the third quarter, Bulldog quarterback Verdell raced left side 52 yards to the house. The Bulldog PAT kick was no good as the Bulldogs widened its lead, 26-6.

Responding, Central defenders Derek Grooms, Kyle Dickhaut and Thompson forced Gleason to turn the ball over on downs following a fourth and 10 pass incompletion.

Gleason added its final score at the 5:30 mark of the fourth canto as Bulldog Verdell returned a pick-six interception 55 yards to paydirt. Gleason added the PAT kick as the Bulldogs celebrated its 33-6 win.

CARROLL COUNTY, WEAKLEY COUNTY (October 31) It’s a Happy Halloween for football fans in Carroll and Weakley counties as Saturday’s TSSAA playoff bracket announcements revealed that all six squads from District 13 will be advancing to the post-season. All kickoffs are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.

The District 13 Champion Huntingdon Mustangs (10-0) earned a number-one seed in their 1A quadrant and thusly a bye-week during round one on Friday, November 4. The lowest seeded team (#6) in Huntingdon’s quad-rant is the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers (4-6) as they travel to #3 Clarksville Academy (9-1) with the winner traveling to #2 Wayne County (10-0), who has a bye-week. Number-five-seeded Perry County (6-1) travels to #4 Jo Byrns (6-4) with the win-

ner in that contest traveling to Huntingdon in Round Two action Friday, November 11.

In their 1A quadrant, #2-seeded West Carroll (6-4) has a bye-week on November 4 before the War Eagles host, on November 11, the winner of #6 South Fulton (4-6) at #3 Gleason (5-5). The contest marks the first playoff game the Bulldogs have hosted since 1982. Number-four-seeded Union City (4-6) hosts #5 Memphis Academy of Health Sciences (4-6), with the winner traveling to #1 Lake County (7-3).

In 2A playoff action, #5 Dresden (8-2) travels to #4 McKenzie (6-4) in round one action Friday night, with the winner advancing to face #1 Humboldt (9-1) on November 11. Elsewhere in this quadrant, #3 Booker T. Washington (7-3) hosts #6 Trenton-Peabody (4-6) and the winner travels to #2 Westwood

(6-4) Friday, November 11.Martin-Westview’s #6 Chargers

(6-4) travel to #3 Camden (8-2) in 3A action of local interest. The winner of that contest will face the winner of Friday night’s showdown of #7 South Gibson (6-4) at #2 Milan (9-1) next Friday, November 11. Also in this quadrant, Number-one-seeded Fairview (9-1) plays #8 Hickman County (5-5) while #4 Manassas (6-4) hosts #5 Lewis County (6-4).

Greenfield’s Yellowjackets (14A) finished winless (0-10) and are the only team in Carroll or Weakley County that will not be competing in the playoffs this year. They join Halls (3-7) as the only other squad in their district not to advance to the post-season. Humboldt, Lake County, Union City, Trenton-Peabody and South Fulton are all playing in week 11 (see above for seedings).
