Holidays are celebrated for all sorts of reasons. Some honor heroes, others commemorate religious events, but April 1 stands out as the only holiday that cele-brates foolishness. April Fools' Day, or All Fools Day, is an odd celebration with a strange history. What other holiday asks us to play tricks and dupe our unsuspecting friends and acquaintances? There's some uncertainty about when and where this bizarre tradition began, but the most accepted explanation traces April Fools' Day back to 16th century France. Up until 1564, the accepted calendar was the Julian calendar, which observed the beginning of the New Year around April. According to "The Oxford Companion to the Year," King Charles IX then declared that France would begin using the Gregorian calendar, which shifted New Year's Day to January 1. Not everyone accepted this shifting of dates at the same time. Some believed that the dates should not be shifted, and it was these people who became the butt of some April jokes and were mocked as fools. Peo-ple sent gifts and invited them to bogus parties. Citizens in the rural parts of France were also victims of these jokes. In those days, news traveled slowly and they might not

have known about the shifting of dates for months or years. These people also endured being made fun of for celebrating the new year on the wrong day. Today in France, people who are fooled on April 1 are called Poisson d'Avril, which liter-ally means the "April Fish." One common joke is to hook a cardboard fish to the back of a person. sented by a fish, and falls near April. It's interesting to point out that Napo-leon earned the Poisson d'Avril mon-icker when he married Marie-Louise of Austria on April 1, 1810.

It's probably no coincidence that April Fools' Day is celebrated at the same time that two other similar holidays are celebrated. In ancient Rome, the festival of Hilaria was thrown to cele-brate the resurrection of the god

Attis. Hilaria is probably the base word for hilarity and hilarious, which mean great merriment. Today, Hilaria is also known as Roman Laughing Day. In India, the Holi festi-val celebrates the arrival of spring. As a part of that festival, people play jokes and smear colors on each other.

Interesting Facts

You Never Knew

“Excellence is to do a common

thing in an uncommon way.”

Booker T. Washington

Did you know . . . During the 1st two years of a ba-by’s life, new parents will miss six months of sleep on average.

Did you know . . . A group

of jellyfish is called a bloom, swarm, or smack.

Did you know . . . The av-erage millionaire goes bank-rupt at least 3.5 times.

Did you know . . . Standing

on a cliff in a dream can represent that the dreamer

feels like they’re living on

the edge or afraid of failure.

First, is the story of the trained elephant. When the elephant is young, he is chained with very heavy sturdy chains to thick solid pole stuck deeply in the ground. The chance of this baby elephant of es-caping, is inevitable. The baby ele-phant does try though, with all of its might, it fights and fights until finally it grows tired and weary and gives up trying for good. Now, when that elephant grows up, it only needs a simple chain attached to a wimpy pole in order to keep it restrained. Although that grown ele-phant could easily break the chain and or pole, it no longer tries. Every time it feels the slightest bit of re-sistance, it remembers the time as a baby when it tried with all of its might and could not break free. The only thing keeping that elephant restrained is its thoughts; if it tried, it could easily break free. Where in life are you afraid to try because you are thinking of a time when you tried but failed? Another story is about a flea. A simple, small creature. All a flea does is jump, so you can train that flea if you put it in a jar with a lid. That flea will jump as high as it can, hit the lid, and fall to the ground. The flea will continue to jump with all of its might hitting the lid and fall-ing back down for a long time, but eventually the flea will begin to jump less high preventing it from hitting the lid. After this, the flea will no longer jump any higher even when you take the lid off the jar.

Where in life did you try as hard as you could continuously but eventually give up and settle for less? The last story is not about an animal nor an insect, this story is about a man; this story is about the famous Houdini. There was a time when Houdini would advertise that he could break out of any jail cell in order to attract people to come see his show. He would request he be let in with his street clothes on and be given full privacy. One time Hou-dini was put into a cell and started picking the lock with his lock picking tools hidden in his belt. Houdini tried and he tried to pick this lock, but hour after hour passed and he still hadn't snapped the lock. Houdi-ni's spirit and energy was growing weary because he had never taken this long to pick a lock and he was exhausting himself out. Finally after countless hours of picking this lock, Houdini collapsed on the gate of the jail cell. Miraculously the door flung open; it was never locked in the first place! The only thing keep-ing Houdini locked in that jail cell was his belief that he was actually locked inside. Where in your life do you have a false belief that you are trapped? The essence of all of these stories is mainly you just need to try! Try to do something you failed at before; never give up; and the more you think you can, the more you
