Their annual Holi- day Train multi-level display opened on November 21, the weekend before Thanksgiving, and will remain open through Sunday, December 27. This elaborate display has four sizes of track gauge with 11-12 trains running at any given time. They come out and have a lot of dif- ferent giveaways.” They expect more groups to arrive throughout the holidays to enjoy the model trains. These groups will include seniors with disabilities from Deerpath and groups from the Heritage Woods Continuing Care facility by the fire station. you pick them up to take them home. This could be the best bargain of the year.

“Our kitten room is filled,” Director Sharon Fabian tells me.

Many pet stores get their animals from puppy and kit-ten mills. These facilities have irresponsible breeding prac-tices and focus more on the bottom line than on the health and welfare of the animals. Animals from these mills may have expensive health issues later on in life due to the poor breeding practices and unhealthy living conditions of the mills.

When you adopt a pet from a shelter, the funds are used to

help more animals who have been discarded, lost or left behind. Animal shelters pro-vide a warm, safe place for animals to stay until their fam-ily comes to take them home. The animals are checked by veterinarians and receive their shots and any needed medical care before they are adopted into a family. Thus, you are assured of a healthy pet when you adopt from a shelter.

Founded in 1971, Helping Paws is the first animal wel-fare organization established in McHenry County. In 1998, it moved to the old Culli-gan building at 2500 Hard-ing Lane, Woodstock, Illinois, 60098. Harding Lane meets

Lake Shore Drive in a ‘T’ intersection. Take Lake Shore Drive past the Pinnacle Office Complex [with Derma Vita] to the intersection. The Helping Paws parking lot is straight ahead.

You can also find animals from Helping Paws at the Crystal Lake Petco on the third Saturday of each month. Located at 230 S. Virginia St., Petco hosts a monthly adop-tion event to find good homes for orphaned pets.

Helping Paws runs sev-eral fundraisers and adoption events throughout the year. To find out how you can partici-pate, adopt or volunteer, visit www.helpingpaws.net.

ComEd battery storage OKed for Marengo

By Samantha FetznerReporter

MARENGO — At the Dec 14 Marengo City Council meeting, members approved an annexation that will grant space for use as a storage facility for ComEd batteries used for the area’s power grid. There were a total of seven votes cast with only a single ‘no’ vote. Said vote was cast by Alderman James Regelin, citing concern for property values in the area as the driving reason for a ‘no’. The approval also grants the special use permit necessary for the facility’s operation as a battery storage location in and of itself.

The annexation itself accounts for over 8 acres of land, while less than 1 acre will be allocated for the covered storage facility(s) itself. The annexed property lies on the northwest corner of the intersection of Route 20 and Ritz Road in Marengo. The main focus of the facility will be to protect the area from power surges in the event of storms and other potential hiccups in the grid. In the event of a large surge, the

batteries will take the hit and absorb the extra power instead of forcing it into our homes.

The location was chosen due to the close proximity between it and the ComEd substation in town. The substation is also on Ritz Road, but on the corner of Ritz Road and Railroad Street, a short distance from the 20 intersection south of Railroad Street. The facility is unlikely to be operational until between the end of 2016 and the early half of 2017. Battery developing company GlidePath Energy Solutions will be working on the project in the upcoming year.

The facility will not be manned by personnel, but will be monitored on a remote system similar to off-site tech support. GlidePath, based out of Elmurst, will be able to see the functionality of the batteries and control them over a computer network they develop to suit the needs of this site. The company currently operates two other locations and is working on a third in McHenry which will go live before the Marengo location.

Members are inter-ested in all gauges of model railroading from the smallest “Z” gauge through increasingly larger gauges “N”, “HO”, “O” and “G”.

“We are the only club in the nation that runs four gauges,” Espeseth and Porto agree. “Sometimes we run five gaug-es.” Their permanent clubhouse houses four active gauge sizes in their daily activities.

The Holiday Train Display can be enjoyed in the Prairie Lodge Social Lounge, 12880 Del Webb Boulevard, Huntley, Illinois 60142. The layouts, featuring four different gauge trains will be operating through Sunday, December 27, 2015. Weekday running times will be 11 am til 3 pm. Weekend run-ning times will be 11 am til 5 pm. There may be extended hours depending on other activ-ities in the Lodge.
