    GENEALOGY SEI'1INAR

Members of the Society traveled to the Alabama Rural Heritage Center in Thomaston on May 7 to attend a seminar on family history. The speaKer, Dr. Leah Rawls AtKins, Director of Arts and Humanities at Auburn University, suggested consulting compilations of records before researching original documents.

Less frequently used sources such as title abstracts, insurance maps, city directories, and business, slave, agricultural, social, and m nufacturing censuses can also be helpful. Records Kept by churches, cemeteries, and newspaper offices may provide valuable clues. Old love letters, the family Bible, journals and diaries, report cards, bride's booKs, scrapbooKs, telegrams, newspaper cl ippings, business papers, tax records, and cancelled checKs should not be overlooKed.

Dr. AtKins stressed the need to preserve one's family history for future generations. Of paramount importance is bringing the names a d dates to life l;Jith oral histories, photographs, and family anecdotes.

    MARENGO CO~~r( CEMETERY RECORDS

Maurice Hinson's compilation of tombstone inscriptions from the Riverside Cemetery in Demopol is will be available for purchase at the Demopol is Publ ic Library in mid-August. The volume, which includes James Whi tfield's history of the :emetery, will sell for $35.00.

At the July meeting of the Society, Edmonia D. Borden proposed ways in which information on cemeteries and church records pertaining to individuals of African descent can be gathered. It was suggested that this be done not only for persons in our county, but also for those in such communities as Arcola, Prairieville, Gallion, and Allenvi I Ie in lower Hale County (once part of Marengo County).

The Democrat-Reporter, a Linden newspaper, is continuing to print the information on t1arengo County cemeteries furnished to it by the Society's Cemeteries Committee. The committee has on hand enough material to insure that the series continues for at least several more months.
