McDonalds McDill Night

McDill PTO sponsored its first ever McDonald’s Night on January 17th. Parent volunteers

and McDill staff served food, ice cream, drinks and desserts. Timber even made a guest

appearance! We served almost two hundred valued customers. A big thank you to Jessyca

Christianson for coordinating this event and to all of the wonderful McDill families who

came out and supported this event. We were able to raise over two hundred dollars. This

money will be used towards field trips, classroom parties, etc. It

was great to see our families and staff showing others what

awesome things can be accomplished when we work together.

Thanks for your support!

February 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Each year our schools conduct safety drills. Most of you are familiar with Fire Safety and Severe Weather

drills. Evacuation drills are conducted each month and severe weather drills occur in the fall and spring during

Wisconsin’s storm seasons. Schools also take time to practice drills where a threat to student and/or safety in the

building has occurred.

In 2015, school districts in Portage County, in collaboration with the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, adopted the

ALiCE response to replace Code React protocols should a safety concern arise in a school building.

ALiCE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. District staff began receiving ALiCE training

three years ago. Since that time, students also receive information about ALiCE from their teachers when we practice

our monthly evacuation drills. Lockdown/ALiCE drills are scheduled to take place at McDill within the next two

weeks, with a second drill taking place sometime before school is out in June. Please discuss this with your student at

home while the teachers are planning for this practice event and preparing your students.

The following is an explanation of the new Lockdown/ALiCE protocol:

• When a lockdown is activated an initial message is announced over the schools public address system that

alerts teachers and staff that a threat to safety is present in the school. Simultaneously, a notice is sent directly

to all law enforcement officers on duty in Portage County that the school is on lockdown.

• While on lockdown, teachers and staff are responsible for checking the area immediately outside their door.

Window shades are closed, and classroom lights are turned off. Teachers, staff and students begin work to

barricade the door if it is determined that the safest place in the building is barricaded in the room. Evacuation

is also authorized if that is the safest option for students and staff at that time.

ALiCE procedures are meant to recognize that a ‘one-size fits all scenarios’ plan is not plausible and that a proactive

rather than reactive strategy is in the best interest of our students. Teachers and staff are given the authority to authorize

evacuation or barricade depending on what they determine is the best course of action.

Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation. We appreciate your support as we work hard to establish the most

effective means of keeping our students safe should such an event occur. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have

any questions at 715-345-5420 or emailing me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Jeanne Koepke, Principal
