PARKSWiese Park - Wiese Park is adjacent to the McCreary Community Building and was completed in the 1990s. It features a shelter house and gazebo, a nine-hole disc golf course, play-ground equipment, a lighted two-mile recreation trail, lighted regulation basketball court, soccer fields and sand volleyball courts. Restrooms are available seasonally.
Pattee Park- Pattee Park, located at West 3rd Street and Willis Avenue, is Perry’s largest park. It features three softball and four baseball fields, sand volleyball court, the City Band Shell, Skateboard Park, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, playground equipment, the Perry Dog Park and three shelter houses. Restrooms are available seasonally.
Dog Park- Bring your favorite canines and let them run freely in an environment that is safe and rewarding for all. If you are not traveling with a dog, stop by and watch the fun. The five-plus acre park is fenced and divided into two sections, an area for smaller dogs and one for large dogs. Double gates enable you to move in and out of the park without risk of your canine friend’s escape. The park features several perma-nent benches, a two-level water fountain (one for dogs and one for adults) and three pieces of dog-inspired playground equipment. Daily passes are available at the McCreary Community Building which is open seven days a week. No children under 14 years will be allowed in the fenced in dog area, and no one under 18 will be permitted to escort a dog into the park.
Perkins Park- Perkins Park, located at West 5th and Dewey Avenue in Perry, is divided by a berm that was once a raised railroad bed. On the west side is the Hiawatha Bike Trail, natu-ral prairie land and interpretive signs. The east side contains the youth soc-cer fields and new playground equip-ment donated by the City of Dawson. Restrooms available during soccer season only.
Caboose Park- Caboose Park is the Perry trailhead fortheRaccoonRiverValleyRecreationTrail. Located across the street from the Welcome Depot, at the intersection of First Avenue (Highway 144) and Willis Avenue, the park continues to evolve and grow to serve the needs of visitors and residents alike. - Page 5 -
Recreation TrailsHiawatha Bike Trail This includes all of the City of Perry’s in town trails. Over the years, the City has been working on making trail connections around town to Schools, Parks, City Build-ings, Businesses, and Health Care Facilities.
Raccoon River Valley Trail TheRaccoonRiverValleyTrailisan89-milelongmulti-userecreationaltrailthatex-tends from Clive, in the Des Moines metropolitan area, to Jefferson. The trail is built on the former Chicago Northwestern Railroad right-of-way now owned by Dallas, Guthrie, and Greene County Conservation Boards. The trail winds its way through the Middle and North Raccoon River corridors showcasing three counties and six-teen communities. Thededicationofthe33-mileNorthLoopin2013hascreatedthe77-mileloopconnecting to the Des Moines metro, and expanded our recreation trails to connect Perrywithothercommunitiesonthemulti-countyRaccoonRiverValleyTrailsystemand The American Discovery Trail.

Red Cross Learn to Swim The American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logi-cal progression. Its objective is to teach children to swim and be safe in, on and around the water. All classes are 40 minutes long.

Aquatic ProgramsLevel III: Survival strokes, front crawl with breathing, elementary backstroke, treading and diving.Level IV: Deep water strokes, front crawl, breaststroke, treading, diving. This level is taught in the deep end.Level V: Stroke development, perfect the strokes taught in other levels, butterfly, endurance building.Level VI: Fitness swimming, strengthening strokes and learning how to use this skill for fun and fitness.Before registration: Double check the level your child needs to insure that they are in the correct class. A complete list of skills for each class can be viewed at the front desk. Some records are available at the front desk. Locker keys: Check out locker keys at the front desk prior to lesson time. MCB members small locker free, large locker 25 cents. Nonmembers small lockers are 25 cents, large lockers are 50 cents. Please do not leave bags and other personal items unattended in the locker rooms.First day of class: Come a few minutes early. Your child needs to be in their suit ready to go. On the first day of class, the instructor will meet their class in the lobby in front of the win-dows. Parent/Child Swim Class The American Red Cross provides a class to help parents orient their children to the water. This class is similar to the preschool level with one exception; the parents get to join in the fun. Aquatic ProgramsLifeguard Training American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certifies individuals 15 years and older to become lifeguards for public and private facilities. The class covers CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard Skills. Participants must attend all session times and complete all re-quired skills to become certified. Must have five enrolled to hold the class. If you be-come a lifeguard and work for the MCB for more than six months, you will receive full reimbursement of the class fee. Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using the front crawl and breaststroke strokes.

Water Fitness This class is an excellent cardiovascular activity where the participant is exercising to music against the slight resistance of the water. The shallow end of the pool is open to parents and their children at the following times. Parents must stay with their children in the shallow end during family swim time. Lap Swimming and Water Walking Lap swimming and water walking are activities to encourage individuals to swim/walk regularly. Water walking is increasingly popular due to the low impact on the joints, perfect for sore knees and weak leg muscles. The light resistance that the water offers helps to increase your leg strength. The goal is to improve long-term physical fitness. Awards are given to the swimmer and water walker of the month and year.Water walking – 58 laps of the width = 1 mile, 29 laps of width = ½ mileLap swimming – 32 laps of length = 1 mile

Winter Swim Team The Perry Recreation Center will again be having a Winter Swim Team for youth ages 6-18. This is a competitive swimming program for individuals who are able to swim the length of the pool using proper technique. Practices will be held three days a week, with swim meets being held on Saturdays. Swimmers will need to provide their own transportation to and from swim meets. The season will begin in November and will run through the middle of March. The first practice will be held, Sunday, November 16. Ages: 6-18Practices: TBD

Youth ProgramsAll Sports Camp New to Perry! All-sports Camps have become very popular in all parts of the country. Now is a chance for Perry to get a taste. This week long camp will expose elementary aged children to a variety of different sports and games each day, from basketball to kickball, and wally ball to pickle ball. Hiawatha Classic The Hiawatha Classic proceeds support the development of the Hiawatha Trail (Herndon-Jamaica-Dawson-Perry-Bouton-Woodward) in and through Perry. The entire ride will be on recently completed RaccoonRiverValleyTrail.Theridestartsin Caboose Park on Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. Riders have a variety of options for distance with the shortest being 12 miles to Bouton and back and the longest is 50 miles to Jefferson and back. Self Defense for Women This 1 day clinic will make you aware and prepared for real world situations. Students will learn hand-to-hand tech-niques as well as how to deal with real-life scenarios. Where: MCB Ages: 16+ Pleaes call the McCreary Center if interested at 515-465-5621.
Tae Kwon Do Tae Kwon Do classes are taught in a traditional Korean form which dates back
thousands of years. In class students will learn a multitude of self-defense move-ments and wrist locks, which increase at each level. Students will learn proper kicking techniques as well as punching, while keeping body posture and balance. During class students will go through an aerobic as well as an anaerobic exercise. Tae Kwon Do is beneficial to all age levels and will improve self-esteem and confi-dence.

Yoga/Pilates Class A The Parks and Recreation Depart-ment is bringing you Yoga/Pilates. Pilates blends body awareness, breathing, and elongation of the spine with strengthen-ing of core muscles. Enjoy our aerobics room that includes padded floor, fitness balls and BOSU balls. Class members will also be able to take a body mass index test. Class size is limited, so sign up today. Classes are instructed by veteran licensed instructors. Our fitness instructor Mary Laborde will be teaching these classes. There will be two ways to spin. Perry Public LibraryWarm Reads for Cool Nights
Winter Reading Programs Just like the Summer Reading Program but in the wintertime. We will have a program for all ages as we do in the summertime. The Children’s Winter Reading Program will en-compass ages birth to 5th grade. The Teen program with include 6th through 12th grade while the adult program will be open for all patrons 18 years and older. We will start the program on November 1st and end the last day in February. How does the program work? Not all the details have been finalized but reading, book reviews and prizes are part of it.
STORYTIMES @ ThE LIbRaRYThursdays, September 11 – November 20, 10:30 – 11:30 am The Wee Wonders Baby Storytime is a library program for infants through 18 months and their parent/caregiver. Activities for the baby will take place on the parent/care-giver lap or a blanket and will include baby bounces, tickles and cuddles. Music, nurs-ery rhymes and bubbles will also be used throughout the storytime. The storytime is 30 minutes and then afterwards there will be social time for parents and playtime for babies. Each family will receive a board book to take home for baby’s personal library. You will need to bring a body pillow or comfortable blanket to place your infant on. This is a nine week unit and very “hands on” for parents/caregivers. Handouts on child development and issues pertinent to new parents will be handed out during this nine week unit. Registration is necessary by calling 465-3569 or email [email protected], September 16 – November 25, 10:15 – 11:00 am for 18 months through 3 year olds Wednesdays, September 17 – November 12, 10:15 – 11:00 am for four and five year oldsLet’s celebrate the holidays! We will start with New Year’s Day and end with Christmas and include those special holidays in between. Preliteracy skills, games, songs and fingerplays are included. Please register your child for this nine week unit in the ap-propriate age group.

Pool AreaThe heated indoor pool is a six-lane, 25-meter pool with a shallow play area and a diving area. We offer a whirlpool, dry-air sauna, tot dock and sun deck. Pool schedules and rules are avail-able upon request. Anyone under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by a parent/coach to use the sauna or whirlpool. Children under the age of 5 years old are not allowed in the hot tub or sauna at any time. Temperatures of 100.5 and over are harmful to children. Children under the age of 8 years must be supervised by someone 14 years or older. Swim diapers are required and can be purchased at the desk for $1.25. Hot tub and sauna are not available to youth during adult swim or rest period.

McCreary CenterMembership Fees
The Perry Parks & Recreation Department is committed to compliance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of dis-ability. The Perry Parks & Recreation Department will make every effort to make accommodations in facility/programs to enable participation by individuals with disabilities. Fees (all fees are subject to change)Daily Fees – Daily fees are good for the entire day. Children five years and under are free and those 8 years and under must be supervised by someone 14 years or older. Hand stamps are given when daily fees are paid. Scan Pass – Scan passes are $45 and are available to everyone. It allows an adult 10 admissions and youth or senior adult 20 visits. There is no expiration date on the passes and they will not be replaced if lost. Ten visit youth passes or senior visit passes are $22.50. Groups – Groups, including churches, scouts, school and civic organizations are invited to use the building at a reduced rate. To receive the group rate, arrangements must be made at least 24 hours prior to your visit. Medical Pass – Bring a written prescription from your physician or physical thera-pist and receive a one-month, non-renewable pass for $12.50 Memberships – A membership to the McCreary Community Building entitles a person to use the facility and receive reduced prices on activities. New members pay a one-time $29.95 registration fee. Membership TypesFamily – Covers all members of an immediate family – max. of 2 adults, unless a full-time student.Adult – Age 18 or over.Adult Couple – Both over age 18 and living in the same household.Single Parent Family – Age 18 or over and a family with only one parent in the household.Senior Adult – Age 62 and older.Senior Couple – At least one spouse must be 62 or older. Check-o-matic – New members must pay the registration fee and first month’s payment at the time of registration. Withdrawals will start coming out of your ac-count the following month. Current check-o-matic members do not need to reapply. Written requests are required to cancel a check-o-matic contract by the first of the month. Once stopped by a patron, a check-o-matic membership can only be rein-stated after review by the Perry Park & Recreation Department staff and payment of $29.95 registration fee. Accounts that were stopped for insufficient funds or closed bank accounts are not eligible for reinstatement.
