PlanningJoyce’s salute to all things British takes the classic Union Jack and, with the substitu-tion of brown for red and the addition of a zippy binding color, gives it a sophisti-cated new spin. Each block is made with 1 navy, 1 cream/tan, and 1 brown batik. Fabric variations from block to block add depth and sparkle.

Piecing the Blocks1 Note: The following instructions are for 1 block. Make 2 accurate copies each of Foundation Masters A and B. Referring to Foundation Masters and Cutting Instructions for patch placement, foundation piece 2 each A and B using matching fabrics (Diagram I). Trim ex-cess paper and fabric from edges along outer dashed lines. Do not remove foundation papers until instructed.

3 Sew 2 vertical rows using 2 units and 1 matching brown 10H˝ strip each (Diagram III). Sew vertical rows to brown 11H˝ strip to make Union Jack Block. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to make 18 total.

Assembling the Quilt Top4 Referring to the Assembly Diagram, sew 6 rows of 3 blocks each. Sew rows together.

5 Stay-stitch a scant G˝ inside raw edges. Remove foundation papers. Hint: If you have trouble removing foundation papers, lightly spray back of block with water and allow to rest for 10 minutes be-fore removing papers. Test first using lightest block fabric to be sure water does not transfer foundation ink to fabrics.

Quilting and Finishing6 Layer, baste, and quilt. Joyce machine quilted horizontal lines K˝ apart in tan thread. Bind with bright yellow/green batik.
