36 YEARS OF SERVICEThe Marquette Beautification & RestorationCommittee, Inc. was established in 1978 andis a non-profit 501c3 volunteer organization.The purpose is to encourage each individualcitizen to maintain and beautify his or herproperty and each business to beautify thecity of Marquette. The committee encouragesthe maintenance and appropriate restorationof historic buildings and landmarks. 2014 cel-ebrates 36 years of beautification of theMarquette area by the committee.
Goals of the event:� Provide valuable gardening information
for the novice to the tenured gardener.� Share gardening “tips” to take home.� Encourage participants to start a new
garden or add to an existing garden.� Instill in each participant a sense of
beautification and restoration in creat-ing a greener and happier piece of their“own planet earth.”

emerging trendsin urban landscape!Vijai Pandian has served Brown County
residents as an Extension HorticultureEducator since 2006. Mr. Pandian received hismaster’s degree in horticulture fromMichigan State University and bachelor’sdegree in horticulture from India. He beganworking for UW-Extension in 2005 as an agri-culture agent in Ashland and BayfieldCounties before moving to Brown County.
As a horticulture educator, Pandian teach-es the general and advanced Master Gardenertraining program and offers garden lecturesin the community. During the growing sea-son, he and his trained Master Gardener vol-unteers offer plant diagnostic consultations atthe Brown County Agriculture and ExtensionService Center. Pandian also serves as thedirector for the Brown County invasivespecies program that helps maintain the plantdiversity by controlling invasive species inselected villages, townships, and cities.

1. Growing Blueberries in ContainersVijai Pandian - UWEX Michigan
Rich in antioxidants, blueberries are one of the most popu-lar berry crops among gardeners. Vijai offers a simple tech-nique to grow blueberries in a container with soillessmedia that can be easily amended with acid fertilizer. Thispresentation will teach the recipe in preparing soillessmedia, cultivar selections, pruning & general maintenance.

Explore “The Language of Flowers” with Garden Bouquet& Design owner Kim Smith. Kim will share the craft ofmessage-inspired garden designs and flower arrange-ments drawing upon Vanessa Diffenbaugh’s Book TheLanguage of Flowers and Victoria’s Dictionary of Flowers.
3. Smart Vegetable Gardening with Season Extenders - Rebecca Krans Ontario
Extend the UP’s growing season with practical backyardmethods. We’ll explore plant selection, cultural practices,and other tricks to help you avoid early frost damage andextend your gardening into fall. Rebecca L. Krans is aConsumer Horticulture Educator for MSU .
1. Miniaturizing Trees in Your GardenBill VonKosky Michigan
Cute babies, puppies & kittens have to grow up, but trees donot. The height & width of trees can be controlled withoutbutchering them or shearing them to resemble poodles. Youwill learn how to shape a small tree so that as it grows, itstrunk, limbs & foliage have the appearance & proportions ofa mature tree. Miniaturization is similar in many ways to theoriental art of bonsai, but differs from it in that trees aregrown in the ground rather than kept in free-standing pots.
2. Live Frames & Wire BasketsMargaret Anderson Huron
Make living garden frames using sphagnum moss & wirebaskets. These frames can be made for sunny or shadyplaces in your garden or on your patio using bulbs, annuals,perennials, succulents & moss & lichen. Protect your spring& fall bulbs by making wire baskets and use them to makeholiday baskets, or on living frames during the growing sea-son, then plant your bulb baskets later in your garden.
