The purpose is to encourage each individual citizen to maintain and beautify his or her property and each business to beautify the city of Marquette. The committee encourages the maintenance and appropriate restoration of historic buildings and landmarks. 2014 cel- ebrates 36 years of beautification of the Marquette area by the committee. Goals of the event: Provide valuable gardening information for the novice to the tenured gardener. Share gardening tipsto take home. Encourage participants to start a new garden or add to an existing garden. Vijai Pandian has served Brown County residents as an Extension Horticulture Educator since 2006. Mr. Pandian received his master’s degree in horticulture from Michigan State University and bachelor’s degree in horticulture from India. He began working for UW-Extension in 2005 as an agri- culture agent in Ashland and Bayfield Counties before moving to Brown County. As a horticulture educator, Pandian teach- es the general and advanced Master Gardener training program and offers garden lectures in the community. During the growing sea- son, he and his trained Master Gardener vol- unteers offer plant diagnostic consultations at the Brown County Agriculture and Extension Service Center. Pandian also serves as the director for the Brown County invasive species program that helps maintain the plant diversity by controlling invasive species in selected villages, townships, and cities. Rich in antioxidants, blueberries are one of the most popu-lar berry crops among gardeners. Vijai offers a simple tech-nique to grow blueberries in a container with soillessmedia that can be easily amended with acid fertilizer. Thispresentation will teach the recipe in preparing soillessmedia, cultivar selections, pruning & general maintenance.

Extend the UP’s growing season with practical backyardmethods. We’ll explore plant selection, cultural practices,and other tricks to help you avoid early frost damage andextend your gardening into fall. Rebecca L. Krans is aConsumer Horticulture Educator for MSU .

1. Miniaturizing Trees in Your GardenBill VonKosky Michigan

Cute babies, puppies & kittens have to grow up, but trees donot. The height & width of trees can be controlled withoutbutchering them or shearing them to resemble poodles. Youwill learn how to shape a small tree so that as it grows, itstrunk, limbs & foliage have the appearance & proportions ofa mature tree. Miniaturization is similar in many ways to theoriental art of bonsai, but differs from it in that trees aregrown in the ground rather than kept in free-standing pots.

2. Live Frames & Wire BasketsMargaret Anderson Huron

Make living garden frames using sphagnum moss & wirebaskets. These frames can be made for sunny or shadyplaces in your garden or on your patio using bulbs, annuals,perennials, succulents & moss & lichen. Protect your spring& fall bulbs by making wire baskets and use them to makeholiday baskets, or on living frames during the growing sea-son, then plant your bulb baskets later in your garden.

3. Seed Harvesting for Flowers & ProduceJeff Heidtman Ontario

Seed collecting has been a passion of mine all through mylife. I want to relay the importance of and the ways to har-vest the seeds from the plants you love. My life has alwaysbeen about plants and how I can grow more of them by sav-ing the seed & spreading the joy.
