Southern Medical University (SMU), the former First Military Medical University, was founded in October 1951 and notarized as one of the premier medical universities

in 1978. The university was handed over to the local government of Guangdong Province and meanwhile renamed as Southern Medial University, in line with the

command by the State Department and the Central Military Committee of PLA in August 2004. At present, SMU has become one of the 8 prestigious uni-

versities authorized by the Ministry of Education to run the pilot 8-year medical education program.

Southern Medical University (Also known as Nanfang Medical universi-ty), located at the foot of the picturesque Baiyun Mountain in Guang-zhou, has two campuses, the main campus and the Shunde campus, covering an area of nearly 1.68 million square meters, with a construc-tion area of 0.845 million square meters.

In 2008, the university was included in the Guangdong provincial 211 Project, one for key and priority colleges and universities. At present, it becomes a candidate university jointly to be constructed by the Ministry of Education, the National Health and Family Planning Committee and Guangdong Provincial Government.

SMU has a faculty body of 14,381 (1,991 from university and 12,390 from hospitals), consisting of 629 professors and 1026 associated pro-fessors. 1,701 out of 14,381 are full-time teachers (365 professors and 546 associated professors).

SMU has close links with 38 educational and medical research institu-tions from 19 countries (regions), including the U.S., Europe and Japan. Annually, the international academic exchanges by the staff members register more than 400 person-times and overseas experts and schol-ars are invited to host more than 70 lectures and forums in SMU.

Among the provincially-run, SMU is ranked first concern-ing the pass rate of scientific research program and

second in terms of the funds obtained. In recent college ratings of Chinese mainland univer-

sities, SMU has been ranked around the 100th in terms of the comprehensive

strength, at the third among the medical universities and the

sixth among the univer-sities in Guangdong

Province.

Duration: 5 Years + 1 year Internship

Eligibility: Minimum 70% PCB & English in Class 10+2 and NEET Qualified Percentile.

Medium of Instruction: English. Study of Chinese language compulsory in the 1st year which may be extended further. This is for facilitating effective interaction during clinical period and comfortable stay. Passing of the HSK test (Chinese as a Foreign Language) mandatory.
