    WHAT IS AN MBA?

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a

They see the MBA as the ideal vehicle to equip them tomove ahead in their careers, condently establish their ownbusinesses, or facilitate a transition to a different organisation, industry or profession.

How do you assess the quality o MBA

courses? There are a variety of independent bodies which provide

    accreditation and ratings.

AACSB International is the leading US accrediting body forbusiness schools while EQUIS is Europes most prestigiousaccreditation. UQ Business School was the rst in Australia toearn both of these accreditations.

In addition there are a number of other organisations thatprovide rankings:

The Economist global ranking of full-time MB As is carried outeach year. In 2011 UQ Business School was ranked at number46, one of only two in Australia to be rated in the global top 50.

The AFR BOSS Magazine survey of MBA courses is conductedevery two years by the highly-regarded Financial ReviewGroup. In 2011 it ranked UQ Business School as number one inQueensland and number two in Australia.

The survey also questioned alumni and foun d that over 90 percent of UQ Business School alumni considered the MBA to bevalue for money while 89 per cent felt that it prepared them fora wide range of economic conditions and put them in a betterplace than their co-workers, especially in the light of the GFC.

Todays business l eaders have to take into

account a broader range of issues than

    ever before, including their responsibility

to stakeholders and society at large.

    Therefore eective business leadership

increasingly requires the ability to exerciseleadership in the wider community.

UQ Business School offers MBA students the opportunityto work with community organisations through the Social

Economic Engagement Program (SEEP). The program providesan active learning environment where students can apply theirclassroom learning while gaining practical experience. It is alsoan opportunity to give something back to the community, andnd out about the challenges facing the not for prot sector.

Projects have included working with pearl farmers in Fiji, tosee how a new economic model could help in subsistencefarming, and developing a business strategy to launch BuffedShoe Shine, a social franchise initiative designed to providemarginalised men with an opportunity to run their own business.

Another project is the Yalari Horizons leadership camp, hostedby UQ Business School, which brings indigenous high schoolstudents together with celebrities and business leaders to share

success stories and inspire them to aim high.

While participation in SEEP is voluntary, the benets to both thecommunity and the students make it well worthwhile.

By helping local farmers to model and plantheir business, and avoid potential pitfalls,we were able to make a real difference ina local community.
