“The IMD is one of the world’s most distinctive schools, with its highly
selective boutique MBA program that grooms experienced managers for
senior leadership positions.” (The Wall Street Journal, 2006)
The IMD MBA is ranked No. 1
in The Financial Times Ranking of Rankings
(The Financial Times, 2007)
Developing your future global leaders
The right peopleThe first hurdle, the written application, must reflect strong academicability, real management capacity, leadership potential and cultural andmanagerial diversity. We seek to understand what applicants considerimportant, how well they communicate it and how integrated they are intheir different communities.
Letters of recommendation give us an independent assessment ofa candidate’s overall personality, influence and impact on people andorganizations both professionally and privately. By the time we invitea candidate to our full day assessment center, we feel we already knowthat person quite well. Hence we focus on assessing the energy, drive, interpersonal as well as team skills and other characteristics that makethat candidate stand out above the crowd.
The right programThe IMD MBA works side-by-side with the IMD Executive DevelopmentPrograms, IMD’s core business. The Executive Program faculty andMBA faculty are one and the same. They interact with senior executiveson an on-going basis in IMD open enrollment programs and bring thisexperience into the MBA classroom. Many of the 60 full-time Facultymembers, made up of 20 different nationalities, are recognized worldauthorities in their fields. They divide their time between teaching, carrying out research and acting as consultants to major companies inmany industries. This ensures that they remain firmly on top of the latestdevelopments in managerial practice. Faculty draws on this experienceto create a particularly effective learning environment that is highlyconducive to tackling critical issues facing businesses today.
The intensive 1-year program is designed to push participants beyondthe daily challenge they face in the classroom. They are tested in the fieldthrough a number of off-campus leadership exercises where they discoverand understand what it takes to lead in a global business context.
One of these leadership exercises is a one-week discovery expedition toa country such as Argentina, Bosnia and South Africa. Here they interactwith leaders from business, society and government who are strugglingto rebuild their country, its economy and its social fabric. The experienceis designed to force participants to re-evaluate what kind of leader theywant to be. It also helps prepare them to drive their company’s corporatesocial responsibility towards a broad range of stakeholders with differing, and often conflicting, needs and expectations.
The special challenges of entrepreneurship are learned by working withstart-up ventures. Teams develop a business plan and sell an existingentrepreneurial idea to venture capitalists. Later, during the 9-weekinternational consulting projects, participants gain hands-on experienceworking with top management of global companies on genuine strategicissues and apply immediately what they have learned during the program.
The right placeSince participants come from some 70 countries around the world toattend our MBA or other senior executive programs, IMD is recognizedas a highly stimulating and enriching “global maelstrom”. Thus webring to Lausanne a cultural diversity that cannot be matched bya short duration exchange program or multiple campuses.
The right reasonsWe deliberately keep the IMD MBA small and selective – we limit theclass to 90 people each year because we believe that world-class businessleaders cannot be mass-produced. We follow each participant throughoutthe program, providing very personalized leadership training with a viewtowards practicality and reality.
IMD can credibly claim to offer participants the exhilaration ofself-discovery and of developing their creative and leadership abilities. This enhances their capacity and courage to make meaningful andtimely business decisions in an increasingly challenging environmentwhere only the best will survive and win. The IMD MBA helps participantsbecome engines of success within their respective organizationsaround the world.
The IMD difference
It all begins with a unique mix of highly talented and motivated participants. We look for and will only consider
individuals with a demonstrated potential to become future global leaders as well as excellent general
managers. Thanks to the quality of the applications that we receive, we are able to be highly selective and
uncompromising throughout the admission process.

Company Presentations (June and August)
Educate and inform participants of your unique opportunities andbusiness challenges, as well as your organization's culture, structureand possible career paths. Presentations conducted by senior executivesand MBA graduates have a powerful impact.
We suggest a 30-minute presentation and a 30-minute Q&A session, followed by a light refreshment outside of the auditorium, where a moreinformal interaction can take place. We will organize the auditorium forthe presentation as well as the refreshments.
Career Fair (September 15)
Do you want to enhance your visibility on campus and meet with talentedindividuals from 40+ countries? Then join our Career Fair. Besides being a great recruiting platform, it is also a convenient way tonetwork with future key international decision-makers and customers -without engaging the resources required for a formal presentation.

Your decision to continue or halt the interview process following theon-campus interview must be communicated to the participants ina timely manner. Further interviews, if necessary, are organized atyour company's location and expense. Two weeks in October and oneweek in November will be set aside for this purpose.
Access FeeFor Sfr. 500, you gain full access to the online CVs and all on-campusrecruitment activities and platforms, plus a hardcopy of the RésuméPortfolio. In addition you will be able to post posters and distributepromotional material to our MBAs. If your company is a member of theIMD Learning Network, this fee will be waived.
Avoiding schedule changesThe on-campus recruitment timetable must be respected. Becausewe run 900+ interviews in a two-week period, presentation and interviewschedules are confirmed far in advance and last-minute changes orcancellations can have serious implications.
Maintaining flexibility in selecting interview candidatesWe strongly recommend that companies keep an open mind withregard to candidates not short listed who request an interview. Basedon past experience, highly motivated candidates who do not exactlymatch stated requirements have subsequently earned entry intocompanies and contributed significantly.
Scheduling interviewsIn adherence to the academic rigor of the program, there areno scheduled classes during the two-week recruitment periodin September (15–26). In addition we have reserved one week inOctober (20–25) for 2nd round interviews as well as one week inNovember (17-22) for further interviews. Participants invited to visita company site should be reimbursed promptly for all expensesincurred during the visit. We appreciate your understanding of theacademic focus of our program, your respect for our faculty and yourunderstanding of our participants’ investment in their education.
Job Offer ManagementThe IMD MBA is a one year program starting in January each year.Because our MBAs graduate on December 3rd, only 3 monthsafter 1st round interviews, we strongly encourage companies not to losemomentum during the interviewing and decision making process. In general IMD MBAs receive offers from October through the beginningof December. 75% of the class make their final decision before the endof November. In order to make the process fair for all On-CampusRecruiting (OCR) companies, we ask our recruiters not to push the MBAsto sign an offer before the end of the OCR period: November 3, 2008.
This is to ensure the MBAs can make an informed decision and all OCRcompanies are given a fair chance to finalize the OCR process.Similarly, we ask our MBAs to stop interviewing as soon as they decideto take an offer and companies not to withdraw an offer already made tocandidates.
Non-disclosure of IMD performance and GMAT scores;no peer evaluationsIn the spirit of teamwork and cooperation which characterizesthe IMD MBA Program, participants should not be asked to discloseIMD performance and GMAT scores, nor evaluate peers.
Our admissions process is among the most rigorous in the world. Our key selection criteria are strong academic ability, real managementcapability and cultural and managerial diversity. We scrutinize theletters of recom men dation to understand a candidate’s influence onpeople and organizations and finally, we interview each and everycandidate for a sense of their energy, drive and commitment.
The IMD MBA Program is one of the most demanding and intenselearning experiences offered today. To obtain the IMD MBA degree, candidates must demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge, skills and personal characteristics required for a responsible andeffective leadership career. Those participants who do not meetthe academic and professional requirements during the programare asked to leave.
In total we spend at least 10 manhours on each candidate to make surethey are right for the program.
