2 MANITOBA ANGUS OUTLOOK

Well spring has been busy with calving, bull sales and now on to fixing fence for pastures and breeding.

Congratulations to all the Angus breeders who hosted top notch Angus events witha strong set of Angus bulls for commercial and purebred breeders to select from.

Along with that the hospitality at the Angus sales was second to none, where our guests got to visit and admire the Angus cattle. The cattle market is exciting and with top quality Angus bulls and females the outlook is very promising.

Don’t forget to tag your Angus calves with the Angus tags for the fall feeder sales and upcoming Angus shows. Be proud to be an Angus producer.

May 28-30, the Canadian Livestock Markets Convention and Auctioneer finals are held this year in Winnipeg. Great way to network with your livestock marketing reps.

Summer time is a great time to stop in at Angus producers for a herd tour or check out the Angus cattle at the Manitoba Angus Gold Show in Oak Lake this summer. See details in this issue of the Outlook.

July 31, August 1 and 2 is the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup, the summer Junior show for our Junior Angus members along with commercial Juniors and other breed Juniors. August 2nd afternoon is show day or view the schedule in this Outlook.

Well, we survived another Manitoba winter. I must say this one was a whole lot easier to handle. The bull sale reports

were definitely much stronger this year. That should help in paying some overdue bills! I’m just hoping everyone remembers, not all papered cattle should be bulls, keep that knife sharp it will be better in the long run. I would like to invite all cattle producers to our “Angus Summer Gold Show”, which will be held in conjunction with the Oak Lake Fair on July 18.

6 MANITOBA ANGUS OUTLOOK

My name is Jennifer Jermey. My family (Ross and Dr. Helen Jermey, and my brothers Chris and Will) run Spruce Ridge Stock Farms, located in Ashern, Manitoba. We run approximately 100 purebred Black Angus cows along with a few select Red cows. I personally have my own small herd that is run in conjunction with the main herd that mostly contains past Junior Angus projects and a few heifers bought from different herds in the province. I attended my first Manitoba Junior Angus Show in 2004 in Oak Lake. It was a great adventure for a first time Pee-Wee member and I made friends that are still part of my life today. I returned again in 2006, for the final year it was held in Oak Lake before being moved to Neepawa and was combined with the other breeds to create one large summer show. I have also been strongly involved in the 4-H program. I am currently working through my eleventh year as a member of the Lakeside 4-H Beef Club. I have served on different positions in the club as well as serving on our Area Council board and the Manitoba 4-H Council advisory board for two years. I have been part of the Manitoba 4-H “Funfest” committee for four years,

helping to plan the provincial 4-H summer beef show. I have had Grand Champion steer with a homegrown Black Angus cross as well as reserve champion and grand champion cow/calf pair with heifers chosen from my own breeding program at our area’s annual achievement. Recently I was awarded Reserve Champion Adult 4-H speech at this year’s provincial 4-H public speaking competition. Our family has always believed strongly in the Junior Angus program and has made a point of trying to attend Showdown whenever possible. To date we have attended: Brandon MB (2005), Moose Jaw, SK (2007), Dundas, PEI (2009), Weyburn, SK (2011) and Virden, MB (2014). I have always focused on more than the cattle show and have been extremely competitive in the other events. I have been public speaking champion, sales talk champion, reserve champion with my scrapbook and reserve champion with my literature submission. The focus on the other aspects of Showdown accumulated last year when I won Senior Grand Aggregate as well as bred and owned Senior Champion Female. It was the goal I have been working towards since I attended my first Showdown in 2005 and saw the excellent work completed by other Junior members. It was a great validation of all the hours spent trying to take the perfect picture for my scrapbook or trying to convince somebody that they wanted to buy my heifer as I was practicing for sales talk. I was selected to attend GOAL in Guelph Ontario this year. I had not seriously considered going but the bursary was advertised, and with the strong encourage-ment of our Manitoba Director, Rainia Syrnyk, I applied and was selected to go. GOAL 2015 was held February 14th -16th and was a great opportunity to meet other Junior members. I had a great weekend reconnecting with people I had met and making new friends. GOAL had a large variety of speakers that covered issues relating to different aspects of the Angus breed and our lives as young adults. Dr. Rob Swackhammer, of Swackhammer Vet Services, covered herd health and was able to answer questions we had in regards to the future of animal health. It was also a great chance to discuss different practices done on different farms. Dr. Tim Henshaw, of EastGen, walked us through the estrus cycle of a cow and talked briefly about silent heats and how to identify them. Cory Van Groningen of VG Meats, talked about his family’s meat business and how he is using a smart phone app to connect people with the best product for their needs. The MacArthers of Heatherlea Farm Market discussed their farm market that supplies their local beef and produce with the surrounding consumer base. They also discussed their expansion from a few chest freezers in their garage to a full time business with multiple employees. They were kind enough to offer their advice for starting a similar business and answer any questions we had. Kristy Stevenson presented an in depth look at social media and how to use it as a positive tool for your business. She encouraged every farm to create a website and to link all social media sites in use together. She also highlighted some of the statistics of different sites and told us how to use that to our advantage. Crystal Mackay and Kristen Kelderman of Farm and Food Care Ontario held separate talks about the importance of agriculture programs that connect with the general public. We heard stories about the different questions commonly asked and brainstormed how to best approach answering different questions. Geof Bednar from Certified Angus Beef held a long talk about the history and development of the Certified Angus Beef brand. He also covered the standards that have to be met in order for the cut of beef to be part of the brand. Geof had an interactive component where he had two volunteers cut steaks to compare the cost of buying precut steaks in a restaurant or cutting them in house. The conference also had some great interactive activities that were designed to have us meet new people and try new things. Jim “Basketball” Jones had an active talk about how everyone can overcome challenges. He had lessons in being kind and respecting other people hidden in some amazing basketball tricks. He was also able to get the whole room on their feet and dancing before sharing his own story of graduating at the top of his college with a learning disability that prevented him from reading at more than a middle school level. My personal highlight of GOAL 2015 was the Legacy Scholarships. They are presented by the Canadian Angus Foundation to five Junior Angus members in attendance at GOAL. They were judged on 4 different aspects of our applications and interviews. The first part was our résumés which included all of the Angus and beef events we had attended as well as school and volunteer events. The second part was based on our grades. They requested that a transcript be included with the application and would count for 25% of the final score. The third section was an in person interview held the morning before GOAL started. There was a 3 person panel that asked questions that ranged from future career goals, involvement in the Angus industry and our input on the then breaking BSE case in Alberta. The final section was a panel discussion at the dinner Saturday night. CEO Rob Smith held a panel discussion that had questions that related to the pressing issues of our breed and what we envisioned the future to look like within the Angus breed. There was $11,000.00 in prize money, divided between the 5 finalists, that was put forward by the Canadian Angus Foundation. First went to Matt Bates, followed by Michaela Chalmers in second, I was third and Allison Speller and Tyler Dietrich were the other 2 finalists. It was a great experience and my fellow competitors were what the Junior Angus program works to create. My scholarship money will be used for next year’s tuition at Brandon University. I am in the integrated program, which is a program designed for future early and middle school teachers. My end goal is to teach grade 4, somewhere in rural Manitoba. I am just finishing my first year now, and look forward to the summer and the chance to reconnect with others I have met during my time in the Junior and 4-H program. I strongly encourage anyone considering GOAL, or is a junior mem-ber older than 15 to apply to attend. The Canadian Angus Foundation supplies a number of bursaries to attend and this year there was not enough applications to fill all of the spots. GOAL 2016 will be held in Ottawa Ontario and it will be lots of fun. I am already planning to attend next year and encourage anyone with questions to talk with Raina Syrnyk, Belinda Wagner or myself, as it is a great opportunity to travel and is a lot of fun. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Canadian Angus Foundation and everyone who supports it. I wish everyone a great coming year and I look forward to seeing you at Showdown 2015 in Olds Alberta. (We requested and would like to thank Jennifer for doing this write-up, to let other Junior & potential Jr. Angus members know about the great opportunities available to them.)

8 MANITOBA ANGUS OUTLOOK

To everyone who is finishing their calving or just getting going; breeding cows or thinking about how to ‘match and stack’ bloodlines to do so; or simply reveling in the unprecedented, extraordinary success that has been the 2015 bull sale season… ‘Happy Day’ to you!

There is now only 35 days until our National Convention starts in Calgary! Your Association is very excited to be hosting this year, in part at Angus Central, your Angus ‘home away from home’. Please consider taking a few days from your farm or ranch and coming to Calgary from June 4th-6th. The schedule and registration form links are found elsewhere in this e-news so please think about the value of fraternity and collective celebration of our national Angus successes before you get too busy with haying and silaging.

There are a number of ‘launches’ we will be doing at Convention, so please be looking for those. Your CAA will be unveiling our new research project, commercial member database and a communications/advertising opportunity for you to promote to your fellow members and commercial Angus producers. Your Canadian Angus Foundation will be debuting its new cookbook as well as (as ‘press time’) our new official Black and Red Angus art work for the first time in 10 years. We are very excited for all aspects of Convention, and look forward to your reaction to our new initiatives, ventures and products.

As Convention approaches a lot of time will be spent this upcoming month working on the Canadian Angus Foundation "Building the Legacy 4" sale, seeking donations of 'the best of the best' Canadian Angus genetics as well as other 'cool stuff ' and experiences. If you have something exciting, valuable and in high demand that you wish to donate, please contact me. 2014’s "Building the Legacy 3" in Moose Jaw set the proverbial 'bar' VERY high, and we will do our best to try and capture the magic, fun and MEMBER VALUE of last year's donations again in 2015. It's a 'tall order', I know... but we are doing our very best! And please expect the “Building the Legacy 4” sale catalogue to appear in your mailbox sometime in the two weeks after our Victoria Day long weekend. And I don’t mean your ‘e-mail’ box… I mean your MAIL mailbox! To provide the highest possible exposure to those CAA members, partners and friends who donate so benevolently of their genetic foundation as well as their ‘pocketbook’, we will be mailing catalogues to every CAA member this year. Please check this catalogue out and consider purchasing from the offering, and supporting your Canadian Angus Foundation!

Speaking of which… thank you for your nominations to two of our relatively new Foundation youth recognition initiatives, the Outstanding Young Angus Breeder award, which will be presented in its second year at Convention, and our new Junior Angus Stockman of the Year award, to be presented at Showdown in Olds this July. We had many nominations for these awards and we appreciate you respecting our fine young Angus stockmen and women. The deadline is TODAY to apply for the Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador competition, and we look forward to another impressive process featuring five (5) inspiring Angus youth during Convention. Finally, please remember the Dick Turner Memorial Scholarship deadline which is May 15th. Here is a link to the application form on our website: http://www.canangusfoundation.ca/2015%20Dick%20Turner%20Memorial%20Scholarship%20Application.pdf.

Some staff updates for you… Previous marketing assistants, Matt Bates and Keltey Whelan, are back with your CAA and working to enhance your CAA member experience every day through the summer months. Keltey is located at Angus Central, our national headquarters, while Matt will operate from his home in Ontario, as he did two years ago. These are two talented young cattlefolk, and we are lucky to have their enthusiasm, creativity and dedication helping Canadian Angus for the next few months.

Further, one of our longest serving staff members, Cheryl Hazenberg, has decided to return to her native Ontario for the majority of the year. Subsequently, her position with your CAA has changed from “Director, Technical Services” to “Eastern Canada Manager”. She is still responsible for most of her prior duties, but will be a CAA senior staff providing closer contact to our many members in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. Her contact information has not changed; if you need to reach Cheryl for any reason her number remains 403-888-3454 but please know she is located in Ontario.

We are now offering a “Basic CAPP” enrolment… In response to those members who raise straight Canadian genetics and would like eventually be a part of our genetic evaluations, submit performance data on their calves, and benefit from the other tools provided by the Canadian Angus Performance Program including a substantial fee incentive on registrations and transfers, your Association will provide a basic, in-herd version of the Performance Program (no EPDs) as of June 1st. For more information on this program please contact your CAA Director of Breed Development, Kajal Devani.

Bull sale transfers are really starting to ‘pour in’, and while we remind you to send them in, please note you have an additional 30 days to do so at the lowest cost available. Part of the Fee Schedule Update that was launched on January 1st, 2015 is a change on the lowest transfer fee times from 60 days and under to 90 days and under.

Please remember to send your yearling weights to us by May 15th to assure inclusion in the next Black and Red evaluations, performed along the evaluations done by our partners and friends ‘to the south’, the American Angus Association and Red Angus Association of America.

In the next month our registration deadlines will come for both Convention and Carcass 101 (http://www.cdnangus.ca/main_page.htm). Please make sure you get in on the action for one or both of these highly-rated events.

Plans we well underway for this October’s World Angus Secretariat in Mexico. I believe there will be a delegation at our Convention to promote this event, and we have information included here as well. I believe Canada will have the largest delegation in attendance… let’s go and make our global Angus friends and partners know how much “Angus means business” in Canada!

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns you may ave: 1-888-571-3580 Toll Free. You are why I'm here and your input is absolutely critical to me.

Until next month everyone! Cheers : Rob Smith.

Spring 2015 Worth the priceBy Christy Johnson, Director of Advertising & Promotions, Certified Angus Beef LLC

The beef industry’s diversity along the supply chain can be both blessing and curse. You might say it’s even set up that way. When you finally get into these years where prices are really good for cattle and calves, beef prices for consumers shoot up. Retailers struggle to find front-page beef features at prices that will attract shoppers to buy the beef to support those cattle prices. You know, the kind of ads that make them look twice and make plans to shop there today: “Buy one, get one free! (BOGO)” With few signs of beef price relief in 2015, retail partners need all the help they can get to drive in-store beef sales, because those BOGOs are mostly going over to pork and chicken. So, what’s the good news? The price of Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand steaks, roasts and grinds isn’t the only thing that’s moved significantly higher in the past year. AAA, AA and even A-grade beef has also moved higher. When a consumer is looking at a $20 or $30 package of steaks, she’s more than willing to pay another $2 or $3 to upgrade to CAB. She knows the brand means her family will enjoy every bite of this purchase. That’s why research published last year says more than 80% of shoppers surveyed in the U.S. and Canada would pay at least an extra $1 per pound for that upgrade. The demand is high for the dependable performance of high-quality beef, even when money is tight for consumers. Especially when money is tight – again, according to research. Retailers are not able to feature beef on their advertising flyers as frequently as in the past, but their customers are still seeking memorable eating experiences. And those don’t necessarily come in the form of a chicken breast. Had that been the case, beef consumption would have tanked years ago and CAB would not have seen 10 consecutive years of growth. The cattle cycle has turned to rebuilding, and all signals favor a significant turn toward higher marbling, for beef that does not lose its spot in the meat case to pork or chicken. As those signals keep encouraging you to expand or start new high-quality herds, this brand will continue to provide marketing support for our licensed retailers. But it won’t be focused on how to cut prices to compete with lesser protein options. We’ll help them build on CAB premium variety such as the increasing demand for high-quality grinds as well as steaks, roasts and newly identified cuts. Diversity keeps our product relevant all year long, either as the star of the show or through a cameo appearance as a main-dish ingredient. We’re looking at new ways to help retailers get more shoppers to try CAB, and then build brand loyalty through advertising, point-of-sale materials, contests, store events and more. By the time our government reports start telling us the beef supply has picked up to fill those demand channels – with your help – retail customers will be hooked on the best beef they can buy and supermarket ad features will guide them toward a tasty variety.

CATTLEMEN’S CORNER GENEX LAUNCHES PREGCHECK™

FERTILITY RANKING By Brad Johnson, Beef Product Development Manager

Beef sire fertility data has always been high on the wish list of Genex members, customers and sales representatives, yet has proven highly elusive. That is, until now. Genex is pleased to launch PregCheck, the first sire fertility evaluation in the beef industry. The historical method to evaluate semen fertility was for a trained veterinarian or lab technician to check semen with a microscope for percent live sperm cells, motility and morphology. In fact, every collection of semen produced by Genex is evaluated multiple times in the lab before it’s approved for use in the market-place. Lab analysis is very effective in ensuring semen has been properly processed, frozen and handled. However, lab analysis of bull semen only tells part of the story. The semen of two different bulls may look very similar under the microscope, yet perform very differently when used in cows. A far better method is to let the cows tell us which bull’s semen is most fertile, and that’s what PregCheck does. The dairy industry has had sire conception rate evaluations for decades. Routine pregnancy checks, standard farm management software, high artificial insemination (A.I.) use and lack of natural service sires allows mod-ern dairies to capture large amounts of highly accurate breeding data that’s difficult to obtain from beef ranches. Recently Genex has worked with several large dairies to generate PregCheck rankings for beef sires. Beef semen is used on the dairy, a veterinarian pregnancy tests cows at 30 to 40 days post-breeding and reconfirms at 60 to 80 days. Pregnancy results are entered in the farm’s computer software and ultimately this data becomes part of the Genex fertility evaluation run approximately every 90 days. The evaluation model is the same model used for so many years for dairy sires, except set to a beef base, meaning beef sires are compared against other beef sires. Many variables are statistically accounted for in the model, these include: technician, herd effect, age of cow, milk production levels, number of previous breedings and many others. This highly sophisticated genetic evaluation model, along with accurate on-farm data, results in PregCheck data that is extremely sound and reliable. It should be noted that PregCheck is not an EPD, but can be read and utilized similarly to an EPD or a performance ratio. In some herds, focusing heavily on maximizing the number of early born, A.I. sired calves is imperative. Using high ranking PregCheck sires from Genex will help do so, versus using unproven young sires or unknown sires from other sources. Using proven, high ranking PregCheck sires from Genex is a great way to stack the deck in your favor! For most situations, PregCheck will become a part of the A.I. sire selection criteria, but should not be the only criteria. Using PregCheck proven sires will allow the ranch to achieve more pregnancies to A.I., thus reducing labor at calving by tightening the calving window, weaning older heavier calves and making genetic progress at a more rapid rate. Like A.I. sires with proven EPDs for calving ease or growth traits, a sire with a PregCheck ranking will help reduce risk versus the unknown. PregCheck is an evaluation of the bull’s frozen semen conception rates, not natural service capabilities of his sons or fertility level of his daughters. While one goal is certainly to find the extremely high fertility bulls, PregCheck arguably offers greater value as a culling tool. Genex has already removed bulls from the lineup due to poor PregCheck evaluations, and will continue to do so as data is available on more bulls. While this decision has sent some genetically solid bulls back to the breeding pasture, rest assured that Genex is committed to providing the most fertile semen in the industry. This dedication to high fertility allows Genex members, customers and sales representatives to use Genex beef sires with a greater confidence, knowing these bulls have not only met the traditional laboratory evaluation but also passed the test on the farm/ranch.

The Manitoba Livestock Expo has showcased excellence in the cattle industry for over a decade. Each year, the best purebred cattle in Western Canada come to Brandon to compete in this prestigious show. In the fall of 2015, this show will be known as Manitoba Ag Ex. From October 29th to 31st, 2015, Manitoba Ag Ex will continue to host the premier cattle show in Manitoba. There will continue to be a focus on agricultural education and in addition to this, a partnership with Crossfire Bull Riding Promotions will bring an added feature to the event. On Friday, October 30th, Wheat City Wild, a sanctioned Bull Riders Canada event featuring top bull riders from across Canada will take place at Manitoba Ag Ex. Co-chairs for the event are Shannon Carvey and Dallas Johnston. Both co-chairs are on the board of directors of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba. Both are cattle producers and in recent years have committed a substantial amount of time to the Manitoba Livestock Expo. “The rebranding of the event will allow us to continue to include the key components of the Manitoba Livestock Expo while building and growing the event,” says Carvey. “We know that we will continue to see some of the best cattle in Canada featured at our show. We are ex-cited to provide the public with an evening of thrilling entertainment. And we look forward to what the future holds for the Manitoba Ag Ex.”
