Maysville Local School District

Superintendent’s Corner

Greetings!

This winter has certainly not been typical for southeast Ohio. Furthermore, the flu and other illnesses have been on the rise. Our Maysville maintenance and custodial staff have been proactive by using preventative measures to increase wellness in our district. They have been regularly EMisting our classrooms, cafeterias, and common places to kill germs and sanitize these spaces. We have taken yet another step by using an environmental pathogen protection coating, MediDefense, that serves as a protective barrier to reduce the risk of bacterial cross contamination. This long-lasting durability helps to protect our students and staff from illness. Also, this environmentally friendly process is non-toxic and hypoallergenic. While it is costly, we believe that it is a worthy investment in the health and well-being of our children. Remember that it is also important to keep your child at home if he or she is running a fever or is contagious. If you are in need of medical services, Maysville is pleased to have a school-linked health clinic, the Muskingum Valley Health Center (MVHC). We provide transportation for students whose parent/guardian has completed the appropri-ate paperwork. Be sure to contact your school building or the school nurse to get more information and to sign your child up for this healthcare provision if you are interested. It is also that time of year for preschool and kindergarten registration. We will hold our registration on Satur-day, April 4th, from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm in the Maysville Athletic Complex (MAC). You can begin the process online and bring appropriate documents to the registration site. See back cover of this newsletter for details. Finally, I am excited to introduce the new Maysville app! You can download it from the app store and receive notifications from individual buildings, as well as, the entire district. The app will be evolving as we continually update information to improve communication with our families and the community. You can access a calendar of upcom-ing events, receive notifications from teachers and administrators, including if school is delayed or cancelled, and stay informed about news items. Panther Tonesto perform at ICHSA

(International Championship of High School

A Cappella) Quarterfinal Contest

The Panther Tones, a select-auditioned ensem-ble of Maysville High School students, will be competing for the first time in the ICHSA quar-terfinal competition to be held at Centerville High School in Dayton, Ohio on Friday Febru-ary 21st! Tickets can be ordered online in ad-vance at www.varsityvocals.com.

Congratulations to Jackson Murphy for obtaining this honor. Jackson has au-ditioned for and been accepted to participate in the 2020 Ohio Music Educa-tion Association All State Choir. Participation in All State Choir is highly se-lective and represents a substantial achievement and honor. The process began

last May with submission of audition recordings from high school students in schools all over Ohio and will come to fruition with rehearsals and a performance in a few weeks at the OMEA Professional Development Conference in Cincinnati which Mr. Murphy, Miss Gibson and Mr. Hutcherson will be attending.

Thank you to Maysville Schools for supporting Jackson by providing a music education that has fostered a level of achievement sufficient to earn the designation of “All State Musician.”

HONOR BANDOn January 18th, OMEA district 9 hosted their annu-al honor band festival at Marietta High School. Both middle school and high school band students from all over district 9 participated. The middle school stu-dents were selected from a pool of director nomina-tions while the high school band was selected from student auditions. The Maysville band program was well represented, sending more students than ever to the event. There were 10 middle school students nominated and 8 accepted into the group, while 15 high school students submitted auditions and 8 of those were accepted. The Maysville bands had more representation than any other schools this year at the festival.

Members of the Maysville Leo Club have been busy this school year. They volunteered to work in the pizza wagon at the South Zanesville Christmas parade and collected money for the Salvation Army by ring-ing the bell at Rural King. The club also sponsored pizza parties for the elementary classrooms bringing in the most donations during the canned food drive. Congratu-lations to Mrs. Jackson’s and Mrs. Kin-ner’s classrooms for a job well done! Club members are ready to begin their annual Valentine message sale at the elementary school. All money raised goes back into the Maysville community through a vari-ety of service projects. Upcoming projects include an Easter egg hunt for latchkey students and repainting symbols and games on the elementary playground. Maysville stu-dents in grades 5-12 are welcome to join us! Please contact Susan Dietz at the elementary school for more information.

The show will have two performance nights which will be Friday and Saturday, April 17th and April 18th, at 6:30 pm (doors open at 6 pm). The cost will be $3.00 for students and $5.00 for adults. Don’t miss this golden classic show of love and optimism overcoming all obstacles for orphan girl Annie and her friends she meets along the way.

High School EventsMHS students handed out boxes of food in-cluding pears, potatoes, whole chickens and more on Friday, November 22nd at Rolling Plains United Methodist Church to help fami-lies in need have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Thanks to all who came to the Holiday Choir and Band concerts, Fall Play (written

by Junior MHS student, Jackson Murphy) and athletic contests throughout December. It is a true joy to see parents’, friends’ and relatives’ shining faces as they watch our Maysville kids perform either on the stage or on the court or mat. As you can see from the pictures our kids really do shine.

Maysville High School had a great turnout for the first ever Grandpar-ent Luncheon Tuesday, November 26th. A spe-cial thanks to all the staff who helped organize it, to the Panther Tones for singing, and to Maker-space staff and students who helped make the grandparent keychain keepsakes. Finally, thanks to the student volunteers, custodians, and kitchen staff for their preparation for 49 special guests.

Thanks to those who participated in the Career Fair. Congratulations to Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Mitts on coordinating such a valuable experience for all students where they were able to meet with over 25 different local business or career rep-resentatives.

The academic team brought home some hardware as they were first team, League Division Champions, and runners up at the league tournament.

Maysville Elementary Poetry ClubA group of Maysville Elementary 3rd-5th graders came together in December during lunch and recess to brainstorm, collaborate, create, and write winter-themed poems. The experience culminated with students producing individual displays that are currently showcased in the windows of Campbell’s Foodland. Thank you to Campbell’s for giving these writers a purpose and gallery for their creations!

Where can you learn how to play chess? KNIGHT SCHOOL!!!

The second addition of the Maysville 2019-2020 Chess Club has been meet-ing after school on Wednesdays to pro-mote and use critical reasoning skills. Fourth and fifth graders are learning the roles of each piece and playing mini-games to fine tune their strategy skills.

During the month of February, a group of 28 third graders will also be meeting with Mrs. McHugh and Mrs. Hill during lunch and recess for the game of NO STRESS CHESS. Third graders will build background knowledge they can apply to the traditional game of chess, while opposing classmates with this fun begin-ners game. We would like to thank Miss Brozovich and Mr. Paladino for joining us after school as guest opponents!

High School Solo and Ensemble ContestOn Saturday, January 25th we had more students from the music department than ever compete in solo and ensemble contests. Between the instrumental and vocal departments combined there were 55 students participating in 48 events. The event took place at Cambridge Middle School this year. This is an opportu-nity for students to grow as musicians and expand beyond the traditional classroom setting. They perform their pieces they have worked up for OMEA certified adjudicators. The adjudicators then give feedback to the students no matter what level they are at on how to improve in their craft. This is just a wonderful way for students to take their talents to the next level.
