SCAC hosts Art Legacy Project

Artist Heather Morris and storyteller Ginger Johnston-Held take a moment to celebrate. Heather finished the piece in the background while Ginger told her story Je Suis Paris, Je Suis ce que at the Art Legacy Project on February 17.

Suzie Cappa artist Heather Morris was one of three artists who participated in the second Art Legacy Project event held February 17 at the Suzie Cappa Art Center. She painted the piece above while writer Ginger Johnston-Held told her story Je Suis Paris, Je Suis ce que. The Art Legacy Project is a quarterly oration of three stories with artists responding, in real time, to the tales that are told. At the end of the evening there is a possibility for members of the audience to purchase a piece of the artwork. All proceeds from the event benefit Suzie Cappa Art Center and Rapid City Arts Council. The other participants were storyteller Lisa Ann Gallagher working with artists Anastasia Smith and storyteller Nancy Eldridge who teamed up with artist Naomi Even-Aberly.

Three named to Hall of Fame Employees Connie Melvin, Dorothy Rosby, and Tammie Quinn were inducted into the Black Hills Works Hall of Fame in December. The three were nominated by their supervisors then selected by past Hall of Fame winners.

Connie started with Black Hills Works eleven years ago as a Service Coordi-nator in housing. She also served as Resource and Support Assistant in resi-dential and a Community

Living Supervisor before becoming the Director of Innovation and Futureworks, a position she still holds.

Dorothy started at Black Hills Works in 1988 as Community Relations Director, the position she still holds. She is re-sponsible for newsletters, media relations, social

media and other agency communications.

Tammie Quinn started at Black Hills Works in 1986 as an Associate Instructor in the green-house. She also served as a Pre-Vocational Instruc-tor before becoming the

Pre-Vocational Supervisor at Black Hills Works on Range Road. The Hall of Fame was put in place to honor Black Hills Works’ top employees, those who are leaders, maybe not in title, but by their actions. They are selected based on their commitment to the mission, vision, and values, and their adherence to our standards. Being selected to the Hall of Fame is the ultimate recog-nition of an employee’s contributions to our agency.

More than 90 volunteers for the Rapid City Storm Special Olympics team dived into the ice water at this year’s Polar Plunge held February 21 at the Rushmore Mall. Joe Burmeister who coordinates our participation says that this is a state record. Twenty-one of the jumpers were Black Hills Works employees and twelve were people served, including eleven athletes. There were also representatives from the Rushmore Rollerz and Black Hills Wildfire roller derby teams, BigHorn Canyon Community Church, Target, Texas Roadhouse, and Pizza Ranch taking the plunge on behalf of the Black Hills Storm. Joe says that forty of the jumpers returned from last year. Together, they raised more than $11,000 for Special Olympics. New this year, Rapid City Storm athletes who didn’t jump designed T-shirts for the jumpers. Thanks to all those who raised pledges in order to jump. Thanks to those who pledged and thank you also to Pizza Ranch for providing food for a party the night before the Polar Plunge and to Dunn Brothers who donated hot chocolate and coffee for the day of the event.

Black Hills Works employee Amanda Harvey says Derek Neiland has long been interested in sports broadcasting, but not just listening to it; Derek wanted to try his hand at broadcasting himself. Amanda worked with Nate Brown, president of the Hardrock Club at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology to make Derek’s dream come true. Nate invited Derek to come on his show sdsportsbuzz.com to talk with some of the Hardrocker coaches and players on February 18. Amanda says Derek “had a blast!” Meanwhile, Nate has asked Derek to come back again soon and help cohost again. Our thanks to Nate Brown for help making a dream come true!
